How Kherson museums were looted. A film worth watching

Preamble. I am one of the few people who have written about the looting of museums in eastern Ukraine since 2014. But at the time, it seemed to be happening somewhere far away, in Australia, although in Moscow the antiques market was literally teeming with antiquities from eastern Ukraine

However... we have what we have. As for me, there is nothing new in the fact that Russians steal from museums. They have always done it and will always do it: they will sell something, and someone will be declared a "great Russian artist", although the artist had a relationship to Russia as a beaver has to a cloven-hoofed animal. Russians don't give a shit about logic - they just quietly shit and go, as they say, "I found it". And that's it.

Now about the film itself. This is a documentary. It's an interesting and boring work done to find those involved in the theft of museums in the Kherson region.

At the end of the fifth minute of the film, you are shocked to see the empty ancient safes from which the Russians stupidly stole everything and left nothing behind. Although... not shocking is the wrong expression. It would be more accurate to say that this is a reminder that the war is not in Guadeloupe, but much closer. And that the Russians will do exactly the same thing in your town or village if they have the opportunity

The only thing I personally didn't like was the way we covered a person who passed on information about how the Russians were looting the Kherson Art Museum. In my opinion, it was too early to do this - there are still enough collaborators in Kherson, which means that it is a risk to a person's life.

On the other hand, the person who informed the public about the theft is an adult and has her own head on her shoulders - who am I to criticise her choice to show her face? I have to respect this decision, even though I really don't like it

The seventh minute is trash and comedy: the FSB officers went to the museum worker's house to search it, because they thought she was hiding museum documents there...

The film also shows what always happens during the occupation: employees changing their shoes on the flight and appointing outright morons to senior positions because they support Russia.

The Kherson Museum of Local Lore - the former director went into cooperation with the Katsaps. After that, some people with a pro-Ukrainian position left the city. The museum is turning into one of the centres of Russian propaganda - Russian military are hosted on its territory and various Goebbels-style videos are filmed

This was not in Alaska. It's just a 10-12 hour drive from Kyiv, not as far as it seems at first glance

By the way, a request to the authors of the film - at the 11th minute you show and write that it is a player Katyonak, although it is actually a player named Steshin. If possible, please correct it, because it's too jarring.

The room with the antique weapons is completely looted. The empty shelves resemble images from the late Soviet era, when there was virtually nothing in the shops. Or that locusts entered the museum and devoured everything they could get their hands on

Scythian gold, Sarmatian gold, Hun gold were also stolen by the Russians. All that remains are the places where it used to be in the museum. And the lighting. Nothing else. The Katsaps took more than 23,000 exhibits from the Kherson Museum of Local Lore in a week

Well, stealing icons from a museum located on the territory of a foreign state is not really something to comment on. Although... perhaps the Russian god approves of this - I would not be surprised if it concerns Russians and their behaviour on foreign soil.

In total, more than 10,000 items were stolen from the Kherson Art Museum. Personally, it reminds me of how the Nazis once plundered Europe. It's stupidly similar.
