«Зашла с камерой в электричку — и вдруг вижу Деда Мороза, под костюмом видна военная форма. Я просто подошла к этому мужчине — здравствуйте, какой у вас интересный костюм, а откуда вы. Оказалось, что это Илья, что он из Донецка, что он воюет на стороне россии и едет из госпиталя навестить свою семью после ранения. Ему дали четыре дня отпуска.

— И ты сразу напросилась с Ильёй на фронт?

— Он очень открытый человек, мы обменялись телефонами. Через несколько дней я приехала к нему домой, сняла, как он уезжает обратно и прощается с семьёй. Договорились быть на связи. И в середине января 2023 года Илья мне звонит и говорит, что батальон выводят с фронта в тыл на переформирование. То есть, добавляют туда новых людей. И я абсолютно внаглую и как бы в шутку спрашиваю — а можно ли я к вам с камерой приеду поснимаю. Он говорит — а давай. Я говорю — ты что, совсем с ума сошёл, у меня нет разрешения, ничего нет. Он говорит — да ничего, всем пофиг, скажешь, что ты чья-нибудь жена. И я поехала»

«Помню, что отправка на фронт была 17 февраля — в день моего рождения. Мне подарили три шоколадки Alpen Gold. Сказали — что ж ты не сказала, надо выпить. Я ответила — я не пью. Это был лучший день рождения в моей жизни. Подарок судьбы.

— С 24 февраля 2022 года, когда весь наш привычный мир вывернулся наизнанку, моей главной мечтой и смыслом жизни стало увидеть и понять наш новый перевёрнутый мир войны. Ведь про эту войну так мало глубоких материалов с российской стороны фронта — для нашей истории, для нашего осознания себя. Не про взятые или оставленные высоты, а про людей на войне. Санкции США снова осложнили расчёты за нефть — индийские банки теперь не спешат с переводами, пока в Нью-Дели решают, у кого можно покупать, а с кем лучше не связываться. В итоге деньги продавцам приходят с задержками, а Индия получает возможность выбивать для себя более выгодные условия.

The shadow fleet of the Russian Federation. An essay about eggs

I read a rather interesting article about the Russian shadow fleet, entitled "How to exorcise the Russian ghost shadow fleet". I quote it in full:

"Recent revelations that Moscow's shadowy oil tanker ghost fleet is loaded with spy equipment and prone to cutting undersea cables point to an urgent need to counter the Kremlin's sabotage campaign in a way that would further undermine Russia's wartime economy.

For far too long, the United States and Europe have turned a blind eye, relying on often belated and meaningless sanctions to counter Moscow's illegal economic life jacket. The incoming Trump administration should target this ghost fleet with more than sanctions as part of its broader plan to bring Moscow to the negotiating table.

Russia's shadow fleet has become a key tool in maintaining oil exports in defiance of Western sanctions. By mid-2024, this secretive armada was responsible for transporting more than 70 per cent of Russia's oil and its by-products, effectively undermining the price cap.

The fleet consists of more than 400 oil tankers and approximately 200 oil tankers, accounting for about 20 per cent of the world's oil tanker fleet and 7 per cent of oil product tankers. The revenues generated by these covert operations are significant.

In the first half of 2024, Russia's revenues from oil and gas sales increased by 41%, indicating the significant role of the fleet in financing the Kremlin's efforts.

Russia's shadow fleet uses a number of sophisticated tactics to avoid detection and sanctions, allowing it to continue exporting oil and other sanctioned goods. These vessels often disable their Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponders to "disappear", making it difficult for maritime authorities to track their movements.

Ship-to-ship transshipment is another common practice, often carried out in remote areas such as the eastern Mediterranean or off the coast of West Africa, where regulatory oversight is limited. These operations are supported by a growing network of 'false flags', where vessels register in jurisdictions with weak enforcement, such as Panama and Liberia, to disguise their ownership.

In addition, Russia relies on outdated tankers purchased on secondary markets, which are less likely to meet strict international standards, increasing environmental risks. This tactic highlights Russia's ability to exploit regulatory loopholes and the fragmented nature of global maritime governance, which poses challenges for enforcement mechanisms.

From oil smuggling to sabotage.
At the end of December 2024, a series of submarine cable damages in the Baltic Sea raised significant security concerns. On 25 December, the Estlink 2 power cable, critical for power supply between Finland and Estonia, was damaged, coinciding with the presence of the Eagle S oil tanker, suspected to be part of Russia's "shadow fleet".

The Finnish authorities detained the vessel, suspecting it of dragging its anchor to break the cable, which is being investigated as aggravated vandalism and interference with communications. This incident follows a series of similar violations, including the severing of two submarine telecommunications cables in mid-November 2024, which European officials suspect was linked to hybrid warfare tactics.

The first incident involved the BCS East-West Interlink cable between Lithuania and Sweden, and the second involved the C-Lion1 cable connecting Finland and Germany.

Through its shadow fleet, Russia is demonstrating a new form of grey zone warfare in which it uses commercial vessels to carry out sensitive military missions and support its declining economy.

By using old tankers, often with unknown owners and prone to manipulation of electronic signatures, Russia has a crude but effective variation of "fleet in action". This fleet cannot win a decisive naval battle, but it can smuggle oil and conduct sabotage, and in the process coerce NATO member states and support Moscow's wartime economy.

The sanctions already in place are not enough to counter this new threat. The United States needs to follow Sweden's lead and increasingly detain these vessels as part of broader investigations. This will likely require the creation of new naval task forces with significant support from the US Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies.

Maritime interdiction does not necessarily have to be limited to attacking enemy ships. It often involves legal investigations and the seizure of suspicious vessels, which requires a resource commitment that neither the Biden administration nor Europe has yet demonstrated a willingness to provide.More importantly, this is not a purely military function; it involves coordinating the efforts of various agencies and security forces to detect, track and interdict illegal maritime traffic.

Secondly, the best way to counter smuggling and sabotage is through the grey zone. The new Trump team should consider covert action to counter, if not actively destroy, Russia's shadow fleet

Kremlin leaders should worry about losing money and wondering where the next strike will come from before sitting down to negotiate. And the United States has a long history of pursuing both covert and overt naval campaigns to pressure rivals. From piracy during the American Revolution and the combination of unconventional land and sea battles during the Barbary Coast Pirates to the tanker war of the 1980s, history illustrates numerous creative ways to counter Russia's shadowy fleet without dragging the United States into a dangerous spiral of escalation.

It is likely that President Trump will have to combine several instruments of power to reduce Russian maritime sabotage and illegal oil trade. Just as sanctions alone have proven to be rather ineffective, covert action alone would be reckless.

The best strategy would be a combination of new law enforcement measures, existing sanctions, intelligence, and a mix of covert action and conventional military force. The key will be to balance the approach and integrate partners and allies to enhance the effect.

In addition, these coercive measures should be coordinated with ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine, giving the new US special envoy and Kyiv leverage in the backroom negotiations."

Deep Fake can also come in handy - I don't see any problem in spreading fake records of negotiations or documents indicating that the Russian navy is cooperating with terrorist organisations, which will increase international pressure and lead to additional sanctions.

I also do not understand why there is still no ban on insurance and maintenance of shadow fleet vessels. I think our partners have the leverage to put pressure on international insurance companies, shipyards and suppliers to refuse to provide services to Russian tankers. The only question is that for some reason this is not being done
