A Nazi at the helm of the UN, or where is the world going?

Preamble. We live in an interesting, if I may say so, time - the world is going to shit, the UN performs purely decorative functions (as well as other international organisations, among others)

But the article is not about constant concern, but about Nazis who were friends with the USSR. I'll tell you more about it

On 1 January 1972 the post of UN Secretary General was taken by Kurt Waldheim from Austria, who replaced U Thant from Burma, who had been at the helm of the UN since 1961. The peculiarity of Waldheim's biography was that during the Second World War he was a Nazi officer and was complicit in some of the war crimes of the Wehrmacht forces. Apparently, however, this fact was not widely known at the time of his election as UN Secretary-General. He simply did not like to tell journalists about it

Waldheim served as UN Secretary-General for 10 years. In 1981, he ran for a third term, but lost.

The special services of the ussr obviously knew about Kurt Waldheim's involvement in the crimes of the times of the moustached half-wit. That's why the sssr representative vetoed the other candidates for the position of UN Secretary General in 1971. That's why the Austrian diplomat Waldheim took the chair, and the sssr used information about him to get concessions from the UN that increased KGB espionage in the US

And in general, hardly anyone would have learnt about Waldheim's Nazi past had he not run for the Austrian presidency after leading the UN. In his homeland, Kurt was very popular and skilfully used it. In March 1985, the Austrian Social Democrats offered him to go to the polls from their party, but Waldheim went to the People's Party, which had ratings above

Waldheim wrote and said in his biography that after the Anschluss of Austria by the Third Reich in 1938 he was "taken away as a soldier", and three years later on the Eastern Front he was wounded and after the hospital he did only paperwork and translation work for the army.

Only shortly before the election a memorial plaque in honour of Alexander Lehr appeared in the barracks of the Vienna Military Academy. The fucked up part of the situation is that this Austrian general led the Wehrmacht Army Group E in the Balkans + was recognised by the Yugoslavian tribunal as a war criminal and executed back in 1947. Well, and Waldheim himself, as it turned out, served on Ler's staff, when he gave his bloody orders

At his trial on 24 May 1945, Lehr stated: "Yes, I heard that Jews were closed in ghettos, and I also heard that some of them were killed. Later I also heard a report that the police used cars with gas chambers to exterminate civilians, allegedly in Poland. I did not check if these reports were true, because I was not responsible for them and did not have the opportunity to do so."

Only the scandal only gained momentum and a representative of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) left the US for Vienna to investigate. And it yielded results right off the bat:

In early February, documents about the former UN Secretary General's Nazi past fell into the hands of Eli Rosenbaum, the WJC's general counsel

Six weeks later, on the basis of the WJC's research, the UN War Crimes Commission concluded that Waldheim had been involved in Nazi mass murder and should be arrested.

In the end, Kurt had to admit what he didn't want to remember: "Yes, I knew [about the mass shootings]. I was scared. What could I do? I had to keep serving so I wouldn't be executed. I had never fired a shot or even seen a partisan."

Although the WJC found that Waldheim received a medal from the Nazi leadership in Yugoslavia for successfully fighting the underground, he "forgot to mention it."

So the dude became a meme - his "forgetfulness" was called "Waldheim's disease" by the world press.
