Duty Station: JakartaContract period: 3 months, with potential for extension
OUR COMPANYEstablished in 2017, Lestari Capital PTE LTD is a Singapore-based company founded to drive market-linked finance into tropical forest conservation and restoration initiatives. The Lestari Capital team has spent the last 2 years working in consultation with the global agro-commodity, financial and non-governmental sectors to develop a new finance vehicle, known as the Sustainable Commodities Conservation Mechanism (SCCM), which links a portfolio of high-quality projects to blended finance sources. Lestari Capital specializes in identifying, vetting and financing internationally certified projects that deliver verified conservation and restoration impact, starting in Southeast Asia.
POSITION DETAILSThe GIS Technical Consultant will work, under supervision of the Chief Conservation Officer, for Lestari Capital assisting technical support in maintain the GIS systems, providing technical support to daily operations, as well as independently, and with the team.
Maintenance and Continual Improvement of Lestari Capital’s Database and GIS Systems • Assist the maintenance the Lestari Capital’s GIS Systems and processes. • Support the continual improvement of the data sets available. • Assist the Head of GIS to ensure quality of GIS product being delivered by others in the Lestari Capital team.
Technical support provision• Provide day to day GIS support to the various Lestari Capital teams (workflow to be managed by line manager) including the Projects, Business Development and Research and Development teams on an ad-hoc basis. This may include mapping support, GIS analysis, or other aspects as required.
REQUIREMENTS• Bachelor’s Degree in forestry, ecology, agronomy, environmental studies, geography, or other relevant field.• At least three years (3) of working experience in conducting spatial analysis and spatial data management; strong preference for experience in forestry, environmental, conservation, and/or agricultural sectors.• Ability to use ArcGIS (desktop and server) and open source GIS tools (e.g. QGIS)• Good computer skills in the main software programs (Excel, Word, Power Point Access, etc.)• Capacity developing the spatial database, using various open source platform is an advantage.• Good communication both oral and written, in English and Bahasa Indonesia.

EcoNusa undertakes research as an integral part of its programs. The Research Unit is responsible for the planning, coordination and execution of related research programs in EcoNusa working area.

The Research Manager is responsible for furthering EcoNusa programme objectives through capacity building, implementation of best practice, advice on strategic use of various types of research and investigations as well as development and guidance of high quality research and investigation projects. They will also contribute to the development of the Projects and Public Engagement Units’ tactical and strategic capabilities specifically on research.

The Research Manager is reports to the Program Director. This is a full-time position based in Jakarta.

Key Responsibilities

1. Develop Information Acquisition Systems

EcoNusa Research Manager develops and maintains systems, standards, and protocols for knowledge management on field research and investigation. Monitor, capture, filter and organise information and intelligence into databases, briefs, and reports to ensure that strategic information is available for EcoNusa’s programs. Develop and manage a database of intelligence and investigations on companies, other organisations, and individual, while taking into consideration legal constraints.

2. Coordinate Information Acquisition and Research and Investigation Project Management

Lead and develop the management of multiple field research and investigations projects in Indonesia with other units, including the identification of field research and investigations needs and development of Terms of Reference in line with EcoNusa best practice standards. Hire, select, train, and manage freelance researchers, as well as oversee respective deliverables for quality control, while ensuring that spending remains within budget. This post ensures that field researches and investigations conducted are timely, are politically and socially relevant, and contributes to regional and global programs deliverables and objectives across program issue areas.
3. Conduct research projects in alignment with Programme priorities

The Research Manager is responsible for the identification of information gaps and research needs for the purpose of programs development to achieve programs objectives. The post develops and implements effective field investigations projects to help achieve programs goals and lead the development of programs documents. To ensure research needs are adequately identified and efficiently delivered and ensure to:
• Support, coordinate, conduct or advise on research projects as determined by the EcoNusa programme priorities.

• Propose and implement best practice in research in EcoNusa according to the internationally recognized standards or according to the EcoNusa best practice guidelines for investigations



• Coordinate working relationships between the investigations team and other programme disciplines.
• Assess and recommend subscriptions to databases and tools (such as software or other types of platforms) related to investigation needs
• Coordinate when required with the Development Department on grant requests for research-related funding
• Liaise with the legal or juridical aspects of the reseach projects
• Coordinate the research and development of new and innovative research tools and techniques
• Ensure research priorities align with ECONUSA organizational strategic plan
4. External Networks and Representation

Build and maintain a network of external contacts, specialists, and sources throughout the region to assist with research projects.

5. Publications
In line with programs and project objectives across programs issue areas, lead and coordinate the production of publications, and briefings for internal and external audiences while ensuring EcoNusa best practice is followed.

6. Programme Planning

Lead and develop programme research needs and opportunities within the program planning and implementation process and advise the Programme Director and Director’s Team on new developments in specific issues to inform programs decisions, and contribute to development of programs strategies across programs issue areas.

7. Risk Analysis and Management

Ensures that all research and investigation projects are assessed for potential health and safety risks, and where necessary, develop appropriate security management and mitigation plans signed off by Program Director. Risk assessments would have to be undertaken and security management plans are developed for “high risk field projects.

8. Contribute to capacity building in ECONUSA

Lead the development of investigative techniques, skills, and capacity and coordinate the dissemination of new and innovative research tools and techniques. The post provides day-to-day advice to programs and project teams on research techniques and tactics and supervise, train, and mentor researchers and other programs staff involved with research projects. Contributes to capacity building through trainings, webines, skillshares, and workshops, and acts as lead trainer in the programme, and ensures that research and investigative skills are included in ECONUSA training programmes.

Educational Background & Fundamental Qualifications

Level of Education:

• Degree or equivalent experience in the fields of Environmental Policy or Science, Environmental Studies, Journalism, Law, Business Administration or other research/investigative fields


• Master’s degree (preferred)

• Knowledge on forestry supply chain and ocean issues is preferred

Work Experience:

5 years or more in research / investigation related work

Competencies and Skills

• Diverse research skills and experience - both desk based and field work, preferably in Indonesia.
• Experience managing or team leading research projects
• Experience in utilizing a range of research methodologies

• Strong communication skills - ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with a wide range of people both verbally and in writing; public speaking skills; online communications experience, ability to make effective presentations in remote, diverse and multi-cultural environments.

• Experience using strategic research for programs objectives and problem solving– demonstrated ability to think both strategically and creatively

• Understanding of security, information security, health and safety issues related to field research work

• Strong logistical organizing and planning skills

• Experience in development of information management systems

• Ability to work effectively in a team environment across different cultures

• High level of computer literacy.

• Ability to be self directed and to work well under pressure

• Ability to travel and spend long periods away from home

• Commit to the ideals of EcoNusa including a global perspective

• Understanding of environmental and peace issues

• Fluency in English.

Preferred:



• Experience using satellite equipment and other field communication systems
• Experience using GIS and GIS Analisys
• Management and training in hazmat procedures and systems
• Experience and/ or training in security assessments and management

• Experience developing and leading trainings
