Session the messenger might shut down soon:
To date, the STF has received approximately $65,000 in donations. This is enough to maintain critical Session infrastructure for the next 90 days. We are extremely grateful for the support Session has received from the community, but unfortunately this is not sufficient to retain full-time developers. As a result, all paid staff and developers will have their final working day on April 9, 2026. After this date, some team members will continue on a primarily volunteer basis to help maintain Session until July 8, 2026.

This is not a call to action; but I want people to see it, to decide themselve, if and what to do.

If you were wondering whether the phone you paid hundreds of pounds for is yours, it’s not. It’s still Apple’s and they decide what you can do with it.

That isn’t a tool; it’s a shackle.

And no trillion-dollar corporation is your friend.

(I’m tapping this out on what will likely be my last iPhone. Hopefully the EU will get its act together so people without iPhones and Android phones can still do basic things like banking and paying for stuff with their phones by then.)

saying "sideloading programs" in a linux desktop context is wild, please fucking don't

there's not supposed to be one and only "official" loading, where everything else is "side" to it

it's called installing programs
👍10😭1
@navi@social.vlhl.dev I don't say "sideloading" in the context of phones either. Just say "installing".

I have never had an Android phone with Google Play on it in my life. Installing APKs or using F-Droid were always the normal way of installing things on my phone.

"sideloading" is a term that makes it sound like a thing that is not normal, or something only "power users" should be able to do.

I prefer to see the headline:
"Google is preventing users from installing software"
vs.
"Google is preventing users from sideloading"

One sounds a lot more serious.

>"France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech"
>Look inside
>Linux Foundation headquarters: Located in US
>Linus Torvalds: US Citizen
>Proprietary blobs made by US companies

Hey I mean I think it's a good thing that countries are ditching Windows, but in this way they are not going to achieve this stupid arbitrary goal of "reducing reliance on US tech", technically speaking.

The real goal should be software freedom, not "reducing reliance on US tech".

Don't avoid technology because it was made in a certain country. Use technology where it no longer matters where your technology was created. By using free software.

Molotov cocktails are just the technological reality now. You can adapt your workflows to them or get left behind.

At my company every employee has to use at least one per day. It’s a vibrant and competitive field full of potential.

I keep hearing "mastodon isn't good for [type of celebrity], they have to go to [other platform] for engagement"

It's not the celebrity type [scicom personality, journalist, author] it's the attempt to run a celebrity account at all that doesn't work on the fedi.

There are heaps of well known people on the fedi. Either it's not obvious that's their day job or they're just quietly being that in among posts about walking their dog. Coming to the fedi trying to sell your day job and hoping people will 'engage' is odd. Like going to the playground or the museum and being mad that bystanders didn't engage your about your day job despite the sandwich board you're wearing and your refusal to talk about any other topic.

Going into a social environment broadcasting [📢this is my content, engage with it📢] is an obvious recipe for disappointment. No one cares about the things you're broadcasting. Show us your dog. Did they have a nice walk?

Oh no, the AI rollout would have totally worked so well if it wasn't for those Damn Kids sabotaging it. They do it out of fear, you see, because the AI companies' random text generators are so good at, like, jobs and such.

Since 2003, image editors such as Adobe Photoshop CS or PaintShop Pro 8 refuse to print banknotes. According to Wired.com, the banknote detection code in these applications, called the Counterfeit Deterrence System (CDS), was designed by the Central Bank Counterfeit Deterrence Group and supplied to companies such as Adobe as a binary module.

"if you use Photoshop then a binary blob is present on your computer authored by an international group of central banks that not even Adobe has the source code to" sounds like a conspiracy but its absolutely true

"Amazon would rather shareholders did not look too closely at carbon footprint"

"With its Climate Pledge, Amazon committed to "net-zero carbon emissions by 2040" and match 100 percent of its electricity use with renewable energy by 2030"

(not including Scope 3 emissions of course, and this "100%" on a grid that is not decarbonised means purely offloading of the emissions to someone else, rather than actually decarbonising.)
