📌Past tense in German ( Präteritum)

German past tense consists of two main forms: Perfekt (conversational/spoken) and Präteritum (written/narrative). Perfekt uses haben/sein + past participle (e.g., Ich habe gelernt), while Präteritum uses a modified stem (e.g., Ich lernte). Sein and haben are almost always used in Präteritum (war/hatte).

Präteritum forms :
•Haben- is used to express "had" (possession, state of being) or as an auxiliary verb, typically as hatte

Example : (Imperfekt)
1.Ich hatte letzte Woche viel Arbeit. (I had a lot of work last week.)

2. Du hattest einen sehr interessanten Hund.
(You had a very interesting dog.)

Or
Perfekt sentences (usually spoken)

Hast du deine Hausaufgaben gemacht?
(Did you do your homework?).

Ich habe gestern ein Buch gekauft
(I bought a book yesterday)

• Sein - is used in the simple past (Präteritum) as war. The conjugation is: ich war (I was), du warst (you were), er/sie/es war (he/she/it was), wir waren (we were), ihr wart (you all were), sie/Sie waren (they/you formal were).

Example: Imperfekt

1Tom war müde.
(Tom was tired).

2.Du warst eine große Hilfe. (You were a great help).

Or
Perfekt sentences:

1.Wir sind letztes Jahr in Deutschland gewesen."

(We were/have been in Germany last year.)

2."Es ist sehr lustig gewesen."
(It was/has been very funny.)

So
Haben( perfekt) becomes:
Ich habe/du hast/er sie es hat/ wir haben/ ihr habt/ sie Sie haben

Haben (Imperfekt /simple past)
Ich ich hatte/du hattest/er sie es hatte/ wir hatten/ihr hattet/sie Sie hatten

Sein (perfekt)
Ich bin/ du bist/ er sie es ist/ wir sind/ ihr seid/ sei Sie sind

Sein (Imperfekt/ Simple past)
Ich war/ du warst/ er sie es war/ wir waren/ ihr wart/ sie Sie waren
