🇮🇳🪖 New Indian Govt to determine Army's Integrated Battle Group strategy: media

In addition to the forthcoming establishment of unified tri-Service theatre commands, the new government is poised to make decisions regarding the long-awaited restructuring of certain Army formations into self-contained integrated battle groups (IBGs) capable of rapid mobilization and impactful strikes, Times of India reported on Monday, citing sources.

The 1.2 million-strong Army has already formed two IBGs under the 9 'Pivot' Corps (based in Yol) on the western front with Pakistan as part of Phase-1 of the 'pilot project'.

🧩 What will be the operational mechanism of integrated battle groups?

▪️Five IBGs established within the 17 'Mountain Strike' Corps, focusing on operations with China in Phase-2, as per sources.
▪️Each IBG comprises 5,000-6,000 soldiers and various units permanently deployed together.
▪️IBGs smaller than divisions but more agile than brigades, led by Major-Generals, configured based on threat perception and terrain.
▪️Plan to establish 8-10 IBGs initially, with potential for expansion.

🇵🇰🇦🇫 Why TTP ≠ Afghan Taliban?👇

The Afghan Taliban and Pakistan's Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) are not the same — although people in the West often confuse them.

🏳️ The Afghan Taliban has repeatedly dismissed any connections with the TTP — however, the Pakistani gov't considers the group an offshoot of the Afghan group and have conducted numerous strikes against alleged TTP hideouts in the neighbouring country.

What's more, Central Asian nations are actively seeking cooperation with Kabul, and there's even discussion on excluding the movement from the terror list (for example, the Taliban delegation attended SPIEF 2024 in Russia this year 👀).

Finally, the Afghan Taliban is engaged in talks with international partners, including peace talks, while the TTP holds sporadic negotiations only with the Pak gov't — with little success, so far.

❌ Contrast objectives:

▪️Afghan Taliban: Afghanistan-centric, aims to govern Afghanistan under Islamic law

▪️TTP: Focused on Pakistan, aims to destabilize and ultimately replace the Pakistani state with their version of Islamic law, works to weaken the Pakistani state, including through attacks on Pakistani military and civilian targets.

❌Different Public Perception:

▪️The Afghan Taliban is seen by many in Afghanistan as resistance against foreign occupation.

▪️The TTP is widely unpopular and feared in Pakistan due to its violent attacks on civilians and military targets.
