India and China have agreed to cooperate in efforts to accept payments for exports to the Maldives in their respective countries’ currencies instead of the US dollar, which is likely to help Maldives save almost 50 percent on the annual USD 1.5 million import bill from the two countries, the Maldives said on Wednesday.

▪️ Indian High Commissioner Munu Mahawar expressed his country’s support and cooperation in arranging import payments in Indian rupees during a meeting with Maldivian Economic Development Minister Mohamed Saeed, as reported by the PTI news agency.

▪️ Economic Development Minister Saeed also received a letter from China’s Commerce Ministry, confirming Chinese assurances to allow import payments in yuan, as requested by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.
