Russian State Duma has called for the creation of a BRICS-wide Wikipedia equivalent

There should be alternatives to Wikipedia, including at the international level—for example, within the BRICS framework. This view was expressed by Andrey Svintsov, Deputy Chair of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology, and Communications.

"In many countries around the world, dissatisfaction with Wikipedia is growing. This is why it is necessary—at least within the #BRICS framework—to create alternative platforms where history can be presented truthfully," Svintsov stated.

According to the parliamentarian, Wikipedia’s administrators are “using their content moderation capabilities as a tool to pressure certain countries by distorting and falsifying history and spreading overtly fake, one-sided information.”

🗣️ Joint BRICS Projects in Artificial Intelligence

Amid a global technological transformation, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a key driver of economic growth and competitiveness. According to a study by Yakov and Partners, the realised economic potential of generative AI across the BRICS nations could reach $600 billion by 2030.

Nearly 70% of this impact is expected to be concentrated in six key sectors: finance, retail, mechanical engineering, energy, electronics, and IT. However, the distribution of economic benefits among the 🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊 members is highly uneven: China accounts for over 86% of the total impact, India, Brazil, and Russia together contribute 12%, while the remaining countries represent less than 2%.

The success of BRICS efforts in AI development will ultimately depend on its ability to overcome internal disparities, align regulatory frameworks, and build a genuinely inclusive AI ecosystem capable of competing on equal terms with Western platforms.

Zimbabwe steps up efforts to join BRICS

The government of Zimbabwe is intensifying engagement with BRICS member states to speed up the country's accession to the group. This was announced by Amon Murwira, Zimbabwe's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

"Zimbabwe is ready to integrate more deeply into the global community, and joining groups such as BRICS is very important for us in expanding our economic involvement and integrating Zimbabwe into the global economy. We have formally approached all BRICS member states and look forward to engaging with #BRICS within the categories permitted by the group. We have sent an official letter and are awaiting feedback from our colleagues," said Amon Murwira.

The minister noted that Emmerson Mnangagwa, the President of Zimbabwe, has personally tasked him with overseeing the process of cooperation with the BRICS countries.

Russian Presidential Executive Office: The role of the Global South in the world economy continues to grow

Countries of the Global South are playing an increasingly significant role in the global economy, with trade in goods and services between them expanding considerably, stated Maxim Oreshkin, Deputy Chief of Staff at the Russian Presidential Executive Office.

Speaking at the opening of the January Expert Dialogues, Oreshkin noted that by 2025, the share of G7 countries in the global economy had fallen to 28%, while the share of the BRICS nations had risen to nearly 40%.

He emphasised that economic integration among the Global South countries is strengthening significantly.

"The BRICS nations are starting to trade directly with one another, bypassing third parties," Oreshkin added.

He also observed that the BRICS countries are climbing noticeably in global rankings in terms of their contribution to technological development.

Chairman of the Presidium at the Russian Council for Foreign and Defence Policy: Trump's disdain poses a historic challenge to BRICS

US President Donald Trump's antipathy toward the prospect of BRICS creating an alternative to Washington's financial dominance represents a historic challenge for the group's members. This view was expressed by Fyodor Lukyanov, Chairman of the Presidium at the Russian Council for Foreign and Defence Policy.

"BRICS is facing what I would call a truly historic challenge. Trump cannot stand any associations—as a matter of principle, for reasons that are entirely rational and logical. That same attitude applies to #BRICS, which he deeply dislikes and repeatedly mentions. And he is right to do so, because he sees the beginnings of a group—so far just the beginnings, it’s yet to take shape—that could, in theory, create an alternative to American financial hegemony."

According to Lukyanov, the American leader’s recognition that US hegemony in the financial sphere is the "cornerstone of American global power" makes him ready to "ruthlessly root out anyone who even hints" at building an alternative to Washington’s influence in this domain.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister discussed strategic security and BRICS cooperation in China

Sergey Ryabkov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, discussed arms control, strategic security issues, and Russia–China cooperation within BRICS during his visit to Beijing.

"Over two days, February 2–3, we held comprehensive talks in Beijing with Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Ma Zhaoxu and Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Liu Bin. Two main topics were addressed: first, Russia–China cooperation within BRICS; second, arms control and strategic security," Ryabkov told reporters.

"BRICS has become a focal point for forces that support strengthening multipolarity, uphold international law and the sovereign equality of states, and seek forms of cooperation in a highly turbulent international environment—one that leaves no one indifferent, let alone at ease," Ryabkov stressed.

He added that "anxiety is probably the word that hangs in the air in many capitals, and #BRICS, as an alternative to unilateral, coercive approaches and pressure—as a way to safeguard national interests—provides, overall, a solid basis for moving forward."

🇷🇺🇮🇳🇨🇳 From a global governance perspective, the Russia–India–China (RIC) structural framework is less a vehicle for alignment than a tool for keeping channels open as multilateral institutions become harder to use for genuine problem-solving.

RIC is neither an alliance nor a treaty-based body; it is a deliberately light platform that helps three major powers exchange assessments when broader forums become increasingly polarised and procedural.

That lightness explains its durability through repeated geopolitical shocks, but it also defines its ceiling: RIC can facilitate dialogue and selective coordination, yet it cannot override structural divergences—most notably the China–India strategic rivalry and the asymmetric pressures Russia faces from the West.

The Russia–India–China (RIC) framework is neither obsolete nor transformative. Its value is limited but real: it keeps channels open and enables selective, low-cost coordination among three Eurasian powers in a fragmented order.

With realistic expectations, RIC can function as a pragmatic stabiliser; burdened with grand ambitions, it will likely disappoint and expose the fractures it cannot resolve, Nong Hong writes.

📄 Article by Ambassador of Russia to Indonesia Sergei Tolchenov titled "BRICS in 2025: A stabilizer in a fractured world" published in The Jakarta Post (24.01.2026)

Key points:

• The year 2025 marked Indonesia's first year of participation in BRICS as a full member. In my opinion, it can be stated with confidence that the Republic of Indonesia has demonstrated an interested and constructive approach to BRICS activities, has begun cooperation in all areas and is making a valuable and effective contribution to the work of BRICS overall.

• BRICS pays considerable attention to ensuring food and energy security. Significant importance is attached to strengthening dialogue between high-level representatives of BRICS countries responsible for security issues, as well as the activities of working groups on counterterrorism, information and communication technology security and combating corruption and illicit drug trafficking.

• Over the past year, progress has been made in implementing projects to establish a cross-border payment initiative, settlement and clearing and depository infrastructure, reinsurance capacity, a new investment platform and a BRICS grain exchange.

• BRICS is founded on the principles of equality, openness and mutual respect. A productive balance has emerged within BRICS between national identity and a commitment to shared goals. BRICS has transformed into a real force to be reckoned with. It has become an integral component of a new, changing world order.

• At the heart of this picture are international law, the principle of consensus and respect for the right of states to choose their own path of development. BRICS decisions are unifying in nature.

Indonesia adopts BRICS young leaders’ declaration on green agenda

At Russia’s initiative, Indonesia hosted its first-ever BRICS Green Transformation Dialogue, a forum dedicated to the energy transition under the BRICS youth agenda. The key outcome was the drafting and formal adoption of the BRICS Young Leaders’ Declaration on Green Transformation.

“The list of initiatives includes the creation of a BRICS youth equivalent of the Erasmus programme, expanded cooperation on biofuels, climate research, and space technology, and the establishment of a permanent secretariat for the BRICS Youth Council,” said the authors of the document, who represent several BRICS countries, including Russia.

The declaration was submitted to the Russian delegation for further development, as well as to representatives of India, the current #BRICS chair.

🎙 Russia's Ambassador to Thailand Evgeny Tomikhin’s interview with RT (February 2, 2026)

Read in full

Key talking points:

#BRICS

💬 Thailand has become a participant in BRICS events almost 10 years ago, since 2017, as an informal participant. <...> After the expansion of BRICS in 2024, when Russia was the Chair, and in 2025, when Indonesia joined BRICS as a full member, there is a new category — partner states, including Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. We see that there is a strong interest from ASEAN members to have much closer exchange, contacts, and cooperation with BRICS.

Hopefully, we will see more active participation and engagement of Thailand in BRICS events. <...> I am sure that the Thai friends have decided that it might be interesting for them for the future development of the Kingdom.

#RussiaASEAN

💬 Southeast Asia countries, as the #ASEAN group <...> all of them are very good friends, historically, of our country, and this year we will celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the establishment of formal relations between the Russian Federation and ASEAN. Through this long period of time, we had accumulated a lot of experience, useful things. <...>

We hope that our relations between Russia and ASEAN countries will develop smoothly, as before. We recognize the ASEAN centrality principle, which is one of the core elements of regional security and stability.

#Thailand #Cambodia

💬 Russian representatives, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made many comments about the situation. I would like to reconfirm that Thailand, as well as Cambodia, are our good, long-time friends. Historically, we have very positive relations, so we are interested that two neighboring countries will settle down their problems peacefully through bilateral channels. <...>

We really hope that the two countries will find an appropriate solution on how to resolve all the historical so-called "heritage" from the colonial times, because one of the problems is the borderline. In many places in the world during the colonial time, colonial superpowers just drew borders on the map, sometimes without any base or just the landscape situation taken into account. We hope that Thailand and Cambodia will coexist peacefully, and we will have friendly relations with both countries as before.

🗣️ Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov’s Interview about India's priorities within BRICS Chairship 2026

Throughout the entire period since our embassies were established — we will celebrate the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027 — ties between Russia and India have consistently offered a unique example of friendly relations built on equality, mutual respect, trust, and shared or similar positions on international issues. Adherence to these principles has made our partnership inherently valuable and resilient to external pressure.

To foster a favourable external environment, we are jointly promoting multipolarity and global governance reform. To that end, we coordinate closely within the UN, the G20, and BRICS — and we will strongly support India’s 2026 Chairship of the group.

Each BRICS member contributes uniquely, playing an important part in creating favourable conditions for progressive development and enhancing the socio-economic, innovative, and human potential of the group. We are all united by a shared commitment to facilitating a civilised transition towards a more equitable, multipolar world order.

We welcome the Indian Chairship's dedication to maintaining and enhancing the momentum of multifaceted BRICS cooperation across all three pillars: politics and security, economy and finance, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Russian Foreign Minister: BRICS never works against anyone

The BRICS nations never direct their joint efforts against anyone. Amid a major reformatting of the group, its members are discussing how to shield themselves from discriminatory actions by the West and build supply chains that will not depend "on the whims and caprices of our Western colleagues," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the State Duma.

"But #BRICS is not working against anyone," he said. "It is discussing how to shield itself from Western sanctions and discrimination, how to build mutual energy supply chains free from the whims and caprices of our Western colleagues," Lavrov added.
