Main points on BRICS from Russian President Vladimir Putin's speech at SPIEF plenary session

BRICS countries today represent 40% of the global economy; the share of BRICS countries in the global economy has doubled since the beginning of the century and will inevitably continue to grow

Russia will continue to work with BRICS on payment infrastructure

the share of G7 in the global economy is decreasing from year to year, while the BRICS is growing, this is an objective process

only joint actions of the BRICS countries will ensure the development of civilisation

BRICS countries are implementing large-scale initiatives in nuclear energy and robotics

global challenges require a global response, they cannot be solved solely, only joint actions within #BRICS will help

ties within BRICS are strengthening and mutual trade is growing, the trade turnover of the member countries has already exceeded one trillion dollars

it is necessary to create an open platform for global growth, combining investment mechanisms and technological standards, financial and logistics services and trade instruments

World seeks new formats of cooperation, Russia advancing SCO and BRICS to meet demand

The world needs a new form of international cooperation that meets the interests of the Global Majority, and Russia is actively working to develop such frameworks through initiatives like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and BRICS, Presidential Adviser and Executive Secretary of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) Organising Committee Anton Kobakov declared.

"The world needs an alternative—a different format for global cooperation that would be acceptable to the countries comprising the Global Majority. Together with its partners, Russia is working to shape such formats, and you are familiar with them: the #SCO, #BRICS, and the Eurasian Economic Union," Kobakov said.

He also noted that the Union State of Russia and Belarus serves as another platform that offers an alternative model for international collaboration.

Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry: BRICS will not have its own banknote

BRICS does not have—and will not have—paper currency. All settlements within the group are conducted electronically in national currencies, stated Sergey Katyrin, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) of the Russian Federation, during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

"The idea of a 'BRICS banknote' first emerged at the Kazan Summit last October. After the extended BRICS+ meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin left the hall holding a banknote, which he showed to ministers with a smile before handing it to Elvira Nabiullina, Governor of the Central Bank of Russia. This was purely symbolic—all our settlements within #BRICS are and will remain digital, while national currency transactions between members are already operational," Katyrin explained when asked about the potential circulation of a 'BRICS banknote'.

Katyrin further emphasised that BRICS has no intention of creating a its own currency, noting that such a move would inevitably attract targeted opposition, particularly from countries that primarily trade in dollars.

Can BRICS Free Africa From Eurocentric Trade Systems?

"BRICS […] is going to be quite instrumental in ensuring that the voice of Africans is heard, […] that trade is facilitated between big economies and African economies," Keith Khoza, acting spokesman to SA's deputy president, said.

While the current trade system doesn't favor Africa, BRICS has the potential to become an alternative — for this it needs to deepen its engagement with the continent, he told Sputnik Africa.

"BRICS is a solution to a long-standing problem that Africans set to endure by being locked outside and development happens everywhere in the world except in Africa," the official stated.

Conference "BRICS and Africa: Political, Economic, and Humanitarian Cooperation"

On June 16, a conference titled "BRICS and Africa: Political, Economic, and Humanitarian Cooperation" was held, organised by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) and the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This event commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Bandung Conference.

The conference featured welcoming remarks from prominent figures, including Sergey Ryabkov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Russia's BRICS Sherpa, and RIAC member; Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director General; and Natalia Zherlitsyna, Deputy Director for Science at the Institute for African Studies.

In his address, Sergey Ryabkov highlighted the significant representation of Africa within BRICS, noting member states such as South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia, alongside partner nations like Nigeria and Uganda. He emphasised that both Russia and its #BRICS counterparts are increasingly focused on Africa, actively fostering bilateral ties and engaging with regional organisations. Ryabkov asserted that coordinated efforts among the BRICS nations would provide a vital boost to the development of African nations.

The conference featured several sessions, one of which was dedicated to Economic Development within the BRICS Framework. Moderating the session was Igor Makarov, Head of the School of World Economy and the Laboratory for Economics of Climate Change at HSE University.

Participants delved into topics such as the sovereign economic development of African nations, the prospects for alternative financial systems within BRICS, and the potential for advancing infrastructure projects across the continent.

📖 Word of the week: BRICS Academic Forum

The BRICS Academic Forum is a pivotal event within the BRICS Expert Track, serving as a platform for the exchange of innovative ideas among experts, representatives from the academic community, and research centres of the BRICS nations and their partners. Its origins trace back to 2008, when the inaugural expert consultations on advancing the new BRIC group took place in Moscow. Today, the BRICS Academic Forum is recognised as one of the official events of the BRICS Chairship. Its primary outcome is the expert recommendations shaping the group's strategic direction, which are conveyed through Sherpa and Sous-Sherpa channels to the leaders before the BRICS Summit.

🌐 BRICS Think Tank Council

The BRICS Academic Forum is organised by the BRICS Think Tank Council (BTTC), established in 2013 by the BRICS leaders in accordance with the eThekwini Declaration. The BTTC comprises representatives from leading research institutions, appointed by Sherpas as national coordinators of the BRICS Expert Track in their respective countries. In Russia, this role is fulfilled by the BRICS Expert Council-Russia.

🗣️ The role of expert opinion

The expert community plays a crucial role in shaping the future of #BRICS, with the brightest ideas emerging from the Academic Forum. Visionaries from our nations have proposed initiatives such as the New Development Bank and the BRICS Network University.

📊 Expectations for the upcoming forum

The next BRICS Academic Forum is set to take place on June 25–26 in Brasilia, under Brazil's Chairship. Experts will unveil recommendations aimed at enhancing cooperation among the BRICS nations across various domains, including trade, investment, finance, AI governance, healthcare, climate change, reforming multilateral peace and security frameworks, and advancing the institutional development of BRICS.

BRICS joint statement on the escalation of security situation in the Middle East

The BRICS nations have released a joint statement, expressing profound concern over the security crisis in the Middle East triggered by military strikes from Israel and the United States against Iran. They emphasised that such actions breach international law and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

Under Brazil's leadership this year, the group also called for establishing a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East.

"#BRICS remains committed to promoting international peace and security and to fostering diplomacy and peaceful dialogue as the only sustainable path toward long-term stability in the region," the statement asserted.

Dr. Victoria Panova, Head of BRICS Expert Council-Russia, Vice Rector of HSE University, addressed the participants of BRICS Academic Forum, started in Brasilia today.

Main points:
Throughout the 17 years of its existence, BRICS Academic Forum has become a place of frank opinion exchanges, mutual support, great ideas and emerging concepts.

It has become a cliche to say that we live in difficult times. Unfortunately, I have to repeat this. BRICS couldn’t but respond to the most recent breach of international law and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter materialised with the attack on Iran, so they released a joint statement, expressing profound concern over the security crisis in the Middle East and BRICS stance on it. We fully stand by this approach and as the BRICS academic community, we must not stay indifferent and be committed to solving crises by peaceful means. Iran is a #BRICS member, our close partner.

This year, our opening session features Global South cooperation. It is on the rise and it’s essential that this trend is upheld. By 2030, non-OECD economies are expected to account for 57%. By 2050, Asia will be the centre of the global economy, providing more than 50% of the global economic output, largely driven by two of the BRICS countries – China and India. The African continent’s population is projected to reach 1.1 billion people by 2040 and will become the largest workforce globally. By 2033, annual Global South trade is projected to approach $14 trillion. As a destination for foreign direct investment, the Global South has also surpassed advanced economies ($525 billion in 2023 vs. $464 billion).

The Global South and East can indeed play a decisive role in bringing peace and prosperity to the world. With BRICS being a major voice of the needs of the World Majority, we bear a special responsibility as academics to be honest and deep in our deliberations. Within these two days, we will have a chance to discuss global health; AI governance; trade, investment and finance; peace and security; as well as institutional development. The agenda is rich and it disposes to a debate.

In 2020, we first introduced a system of indicators aimed at evaluating BRICS progress on achieving its commitments. In 2024, we produced the first-of-a-kind research that shows what our countries have done and what else they could accomplish to advance dialogue. This year, we continue this practice with support of other BRICS Think Tanks Council members and aspire to carry out this research annually.

We aim to ultimately produce an unbiased analysis of the work done in BRICS and hope that the research results will guide us in the direction towards tangible improvements. It is essential that we start engaging in self-reflection and that we don’t wait for someone from the outside to make judgements on our commitments. We hope this effort will become a permanent tradition with support of experts from other BTTC national coordinators.

Besides, let me remind you that BRICS Expert Council has compiled a depository that contains all of the documents produced by the grouping since its establishment. It is a serious step forward in systematising the outcomes of our activities and may serve as a helping hand for the community of BRICSologists who wish to study BRICS in all its diversity. We are determined to keep this platform well-updated and our hope is that it will draw the attention of colleagues from the BTTC and all those who are not indifferent to the destiny of BRICS development.
