🎙 Media statements by Russia's President Vladimir Putin following Russian-Indonesian talks (June 19, 2025)

💬 Vladimir Putin: Mr President, ladies and gentlemen. It is with great pleasure that we welcome the President of the Republic of Indonesia to Russia.

President Prabowo Subianto’s official visit coincides with his participation in the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. We are grateful to the President for accepting our invitation and for his forthcoming address at tomorrow’s Forum plenary session, which this year is dedicated to the theme “Shared Values as the Foundation of Growth in a Multipolar World.”

Mr President visited Russia on multiple occasions, including during his tenure as the Minister of Defence of his country. Last July, we met with him in Moscow, after his election as the head of state.

I would like to emphasise that Indonesia is one of our key partners in the Asia-Pacific region. Our relations continue to develop steadily on a mutually beneficial basis, grounded in longstanding traditions of friendship and mutual assistance.

🤝 This year marks the 75th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between our nations. At that time, our country played an active role in the establishment of Indonesian statehood and the strengthening of the young Republic’s international standing. <...> Many facilities built during that period continue to operate successfully to this day, benefiting the Indonesian people.

Russia is committed to the progressive development of cooperation and relations with Indonesia across all sectors. Russia played a significant role in facilitating Indonesia’s accession to #BRICS as a full member. We welcome Indonesia’s assumption of membership rights effective January 1.

Given Indonesia’s weight and influence in contemporary global politics and economy, this step was undoubtedly the correct one and will bring substantial added value to both BRICS and all its cooperation mechanisms.

Today’s talks were substantive. We discussed a broad spectrum of current issues of bilateral cooperation, as well as key topics on the international agenda.

The declaration on strategic partnership, which we approved with Mr President following the talks, sets out ambitious and responsible objectives for deepening Russian-Indonesian relations across multiple domains, with particular emphasis on trade and economic cooperation. Several intergovernmental agreements and interagency arrangements were also concluded.

I would like to emphasise that Indonesia is one of our leading South Asian foreign trade partners.

📈 Last year, bilateral trade was up by 2.5 percent at $4.3 billion, and in the first four months of this year it grew by another 40 percent. <...>

We are also open to cooperation with our Indonesian partners in harnessing peaceful nuclear energy. This could include joint projects using nuclear technologies for non-energy purposes in medicine and agriculture, as well as training personnel for Indonesia’s national nuclear industry. We have an interest and are willing to collaborate in many high-tech sectors, such as outer space exploration, digitalisation, smart city technologies, and artificial intelligence.

We are actively cooperating in the cultural and humanitarian sphere. <...> We are working on projects in the professional training as well with over 500 Indonesian students studying in our country. <...>

🌐 We certainly also discussed pressing issues on the international agenda. We noted that our countries’ positions on most of them either coincide or are very close. Our nations uphold the principles of the rule of international law and sovereignty, and we jointly advocate peaceful and sustainable development of the Asia-Pacific region. We also coordinate joint efforts at the UN and other international platforms.

I would like to once again highly commend today’s productive work with Mr President. Undoubtedly, this visit will further strengthen the entire framework of Russian-Indonesian strategic partnership for the benefit of our peoples.

Women's Cooperation as a Growth Driver: The Role of Women in Economic Transformation Discussed at the SPIEF

On June 19, the Eurasian Women's Forum hosted a session titled "International Cooperation between Women for Economic Development" as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. This discussion brought together leaders of women's organisations, government officials, business representatives, and experts from Russia, the #BRICS nations, #APEC, #G20, and Africa.

Participants underscored the pivotal role that women's international associations play in advancing the global sustainable development agenda. Amidst the economic transformation driven by geopolitical shifts and digitalisation, women's collaboration emerges as a vital resource for nurturing human capital, enhancing business activity, and fostering innovation.

Joining the session as speakers were Galina Karelova, Chair of the Council of the Eurasian Women's Forum, Victoria Panova, Head of the BRICS Expert Council-Russia and Vice Rector at HSE University, Hadriani Uli Silalahi, Indonesian W20 Sherpa, and Marat Berdyev, Ambassador-at-Large for G20, APEC, and GEP at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

gender equality transcends social justice; it also represents a powerful economic asset

dismantling barriers to women's participation in the economy could potentially contribute $7 trillion to global GDP

there is necessity for institutional support of women's initiatives, regular progress monitoring, and the creation of shared information platforms

successful collaborations were showcased, including initiatives like the BRICS Ecological Female Projects Award, coordination mechanisms between the W20 and the EWF, as well as the efforts of G20 Empower and We-Fi (Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative)

The discussion concluded with a consensus on the necessity to further strengthen connections between women's associations across nations, promote collaborative projects, and share best practices.

Venezuela Has High Hopes of Joining BRICS 'Very Soon,' Minister Says

Venezuela expects to become a full-fledged or associate member of BRICS, Venezuelan Minister of People's Power for Foreign Trade Coromoto Godoy Calderon stated at #SPIEF2025.

The Latin American country shares the principles of BRICS and relies on multipolarity in international relations, the official emphasized.

Brazil—the current BRICS chair—blocked Venezuela's bid for partner status during the BRICS summit in Russia's Kazan last October.

Meanwhile, Russia has officially backed Venezuela’s BRICS aspirations in a newly signed strategic partnership agreement signed in May.

Main points on BRICS from Russian President Vladimir Putin's speech at SPIEF plenary session

BRICS countries today represent 40% of the global economy; the share of BRICS countries in the global economy has doubled since the beginning of the century and will inevitably continue to grow

Russia will continue to work with BRICS on payment infrastructure

the share of G7 in the global economy is decreasing from year to year, while the BRICS is growing, this is an objective process

only joint actions of the BRICS countries will ensure the development of civilisation

BRICS countries are implementing large-scale initiatives in nuclear energy and robotics

global challenges require a global response, they cannot be solved solely, only joint actions within #BRICS will help

ties within BRICS are strengthening and mutual trade is growing, the trade turnover of the member countries has already exceeded one trillion dollars

it is necessary to create an open platform for global growth, combining investment mechanisms and technological standards, financial and logistics services and trade instruments

World seeks new formats of cooperation, Russia advancing SCO and BRICS to meet demand

The world needs a new form of international cooperation that meets the interests of the Global Majority, and Russia is actively working to develop such frameworks through initiatives like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and BRICS, Presidential Adviser and Executive Secretary of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) Organising Committee Anton Kobakov declared.

"The world needs an alternative—a different format for global cooperation that would be acceptable to the countries comprising the Global Majority. Together with its partners, Russia is working to shape such formats, and you are familiar with them: the #SCO, #BRICS, and the Eurasian Economic Union," Kobakov said.

He also noted that the Union State of Russia and Belarus serves as another platform that offers an alternative model for international collaboration.

Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry: BRICS will not have its own banknote

BRICS does not have—and will not have—paper currency. All settlements within the group are conducted electronically in national currencies, stated Sergey Katyrin, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) of the Russian Federation, during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

"The idea of a 'BRICS banknote' first emerged at the Kazan Summit last October. After the extended BRICS+ meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin left the hall holding a banknote, which he showed to ministers with a smile before handing it to Elvira Nabiullina, Governor of the Central Bank of Russia. This was purely symbolic—all our settlements within #BRICS are and will remain digital, while national currency transactions between members are already operational," Katyrin explained when asked about the potential circulation of a 'BRICS banknote'.

Katyrin further emphasised that BRICS has no intention of creating a its own currency, noting that such a move would inevitably attract targeted opposition, particularly from countries that primarily trade in dollars.

Can BRICS Free Africa From Eurocentric Trade Systems?

"BRICS […] is going to be quite instrumental in ensuring that the voice of Africans is heard, […] that trade is facilitated between big economies and African economies," Keith Khoza, acting spokesman to SA's deputy president, said.

While the current trade system doesn't favor Africa, BRICS has the potential to become an alternative — for this it needs to deepen its engagement with the continent, he told Sputnik Africa.

"BRICS is a solution to a long-standing problem that Africans set to endure by being locked outside and development happens everywhere in the world except in Africa," the official stated.

Conference "BRICS and Africa: Political, Economic, and Humanitarian Cooperation"

On June 16, a conference titled "BRICS and Africa: Political, Economic, and Humanitarian Cooperation" was held, organised by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) and the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This event commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Bandung Conference.

The conference featured welcoming remarks from prominent figures, including Sergey Ryabkov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Russia's BRICS Sherpa, and RIAC member; Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director General; and Natalia Zherlitsyna, Deputy Director for Science at the Institute for African Studies.

In his address, Sergey Ryabkov highlighted the significant representation of Africa within BRICS, noting member states such as South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia, alongside partner nations like Nigeria and Uganda.
