📖 Word of the week: BRICS Day

The BRICS Day is an unofficial holiday that commemorates the first BRICS Summit held on 16-17 June 2009 in Ekaterinburg, Russia, where cooperation between the bloc's member countries was initiated.

History of the BRICS Day

On that day, the heads of Brazil, Russia, India, and China gathered to discuss key issues of international cooperation, the formation of a new multipolar system, and joint actions in world politics.

The leaders present at the summit were Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil), Dmitry Medvedev (Russia), Manmohan Singh (India) and Hu Jintao (China). During the event, two main meetings were held, in which participants discussed topical issues and worked out joint solutions.

🖋️ Summit results and statements

One of the significant outcomes of the summit were two joint statements. One raised the issue of global food security and the other planned the next BRIC Heads of State meeting in Brazil in 2010.

🔥 BRICS Day event

This year our partner Library for Foreign Literature, in collaboration with TV BRICS International Media Network and the Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology, will organise the #BRICS Day. More information on the event can be found on the website.

The BRICS Educational Mission in Iran Has Come to an End 🇮🇷

Three days that our team will long remember: from June 12 to 14, the BRICS Educational Mission took place in Tehran — against the backdrop of a sharp escalation in the region and breaking news arriving in real time.

Despite the challenging situation, we managed to carry out the full program, which included:

▶️ Expert sessions on strengthening the strategic partnership between Russia and Iran

▶️ Discussions on opportunities for Iranian youth within the BRICS framework

▶️ An interactive intercultural seminar «BRICS Specifics»

At the conclusion of the program, Russian and Iranian participants discussed further steps for developing cooperation and exchanged views on the current situation in the region.

We would like to express our special gratitude to our Iranian partners for their warm welcome, openness, and willingness to engage in dialogue even under challenging circumstances.

Priorities for BRICS Humanitarian Cooperation Formulated at SPIEF

On June 19, a discussion titled "BRICS Charity and Humanitarian Cooperation: Creating a Favourable Environment for People’s Lives" unfolded during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The session brought together government officials, experts, civil society leaders, and business representatives to explore how civil initiatives can enhance social stability and quality of life across the BRICS nations.

Central to the discussion was the issue of empowering civil society to more actively contribute to addressing humanitarian challenges. Participants highlighted how charitable and volunteer efforts have evolved into powerful instruments—not just for delivering targeted aid, but for forging stronger societal bonds, fostering international trust, and establishing enduring cross-border partnerships.

The session included a statement by Victoria Panova, Head of the BRICS Expert Council-Russia, Russia's Sherpa in the Women's Twenty, and Vice Rector at HSE University.

in the midst of shifting geopolitical landscapes, the role of civil society is gaining prominence, with charity emerging as a crucial element of international dialogue

some forecasts suggest that the annual activities of non-profit organisations and charitable entities globally could soar to $859 billion, a figure comparable to the GDP of an entire nation

fostering civil dialogue within #BRICS is crucial

it was through Russia's initiative that BRICS Civil Forums have been convened since 2015, culminating in the Kazan Declaration of 2024, which established the BRICS Civil Council—a framework designed to facilitate sustainable interaction among the civil societies of member nations

a notable example of successful humanitarian initiatives within this Civil Track was the International Blind Football Tournament held in Moscow in December 2024

Summing up the insights from the discussion, participants underscored the necessity of uniting the efforts of all stakeholders—from government agencies to local communities—in advancing the humanitarian agenda. They identified support for charity, expansion of civil interaction channels, and the development of joint projects as pivotal areas for future cooperation among the BRICS nations.

🎙 Media statements by Russia's President Vladimir Putin following Russian-Indonesian talks (June 19, 2025)

💬 Vladimir Putin: Mr President, ladies and gentlemen. It is with great pleasure that we welcome the President of the Republic of Indonesia to Russia.

President Prabowo Subianto’s official visit coincides with his participation in the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. We are grateful to the President for accepting our invitation and for his forthcoming address at tomorrow’s Forum plenary session, which this year is dedicated to the theme “Shared Values as the Foundation of Growth in a Multipolar World.”

Mr President visited Russia on multiple occasions, including during his tenure as the Minister of Defence of his country. Last July, we met with him in Moscow, after his election as the head of state.

I would like to emphasise that Indonesia is one of our key partners in the Asia-Pacific region. Our relations continue to develop steadily on a mutually beneficial basis, grounded in longstanding traditions of friendship and mutual assistance.

🤝 This year marks the 75th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between our nations. At that time, our country played an active role in the establishment of Indonesian statehood and the strengthening of the young Republic’s international standing. <...> Many facilities built during that period continue to operate successfully to this day, benefiting the Indonesian people.

Russia is committed to the progressive development of cooperation and relations with Indonesia across all sectors. Russia played a significant role in facilitating Indonesia’s accession to #BRICS as a full member. We welcome Indonesia’s assumption of membership rights effective January 1.

Given Indonesia’s weight and influence in contemporary global politics and economy, this step was undoubtedly the correct one and will bring substantial added value to both BRICS and all its cooperation mechanisms.

Today’s talks were substantive. We discussed a broad spectrum of current issues of bilateral cooperation, as well as key topics on the international agenda.

The declaration on strategic partnership, which we approved with Mr President following the talks, sets out ambitious and responsible objectives for deepening Russian-Indonesian relations across multiple domains, with particular emphasis on trade and economic cooperation. Several intergovernmental agreements and interagency arrangements were also concluded.

I would like to emphasise that Indonesia is one of our leading South Asian foreign trade partners.

📈 Last year, bilateral trade was up by 2.5 percent at $4.3 billion, and in the first four months of this year it grew by another 40 percent. <...>

We are also open to cooperation with our Indonesian partners in harnessing peaceful nuclear energy. This could include joint projects using nuclear technologies for non-energy purposes in medicine and agriculture, as well as training personnel for Indonesia’s national nuclear industry. We have an interest and are willing to collaborate in many high-tech sectors, such as outer space exploration, digitalisation, smart city technologies, and artificial intelligence.

We are actively cooperating in the cultural and humanitarian sphere. <...> We are working on projects in the professional training as well with over 500 Indonesian students studying in our country. <...>

🌐 We certainly also discussed pressing issues on the international agenda. We noted that our countries’ positions on most of them either coincide or are very close. Our nations uphold the principles of the rule of international law and sovereignty, and we jointly advocate peaceful and sustainable development of the Asia-Pacific region. We also coordinate joint efforts at the UN and other international platforms.

I would like to once again highly commend today’s productive work with Mr President. Undoubtedly, this visit will further strengthen the entire framework of Russian-Indonesian strategic partnership for the benefit of our peoples.
