Vietnam to join BRICS

Vietnam has joined BRICS as a partner country of the bloc. This was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, which chairs the bloc in 2025.

The ministry emphasised that Vietnam has become the tenth partner of the bloc:
"With a population of almost 100 million and a dynamic economy deeply integrated into global value chains, Vietnam stands out as a relevant actor in Asia. The country shares with the #BRICS members and partners a commitment to a more inclusive and representative international order. Its efforts in favour of South-South cooperation and sustainable development reinforce its convergence with the interests of the group," the text notes.

The 2024 bloc was chaired by Russia, with the key event during the chairmanship being the summit in Kazan on 22-24 October, where it was decided to create a category of partner states. Currently, the BRICS partners include Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

๐Ÿ“– Word of the week: BRICS Day

The BRICS Day is an unofficial holiday that commemorates the first BRICS Summit held on 16-17 June 2009 in Ekaterinburg, Russia, where cooperation between the bloc's member countries was initiated.

โญ History of the BRICS Day

On that day, the heads of Brazil, Russia, India, and China gathered to discuss key issues of international cooperation, the formation of a new multipolar system, and joint actions in world politics.

The leaders present at the summit were Luiz Inรกcio Lula da Silva (Brazil), Dmitry Medvedev (Russia), Manmohan Singh (India) and Hu Jintao (China). During the event, two main meetings were held, in which participants discussed topical issues and worked out joint solutions.

๐Ÿ–‹๏ธ Summit results and statements

One of the significant outcomes of the summit were two joint statements. One raised the issue of global food security and the other planned the next BRIC Heads of State meeting in Brazil in 2010.

๐Ÿ”ฅ BRICS Day event

This year our partner Library for Foreign Literature, in collaboration with TV BRICS International Media Network and the Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology, will organise the #BRICS Day. More information on the event can be found on the website.

Priorities for BRICS Humanitarian Cooperation Formulated at SPIEF

On June 19, a discussion titled "BRICS Charity and Humanitarian Cooperation: Creating a Favourable Environment for Peopleโ€™s Lives" unfolded during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The session brought together government officials, experts, civil society leaders, and business representatives to explore how civil initiatives can enhance social stability and quality of life across the BRICS nations.

Central to the discussion was the issue of empowering civil society to more actively contribute to addressing humanitarian challenges. Participants highlighted how charitable and volunteer efforts have evolved into powerful instrumentsโ€”not just for delivering targeted aid, but for forging stronger societal bonds, fostering international trust, and establishing enduring cross-border partnerships.

The session included a statement by Victoria Panova, Head of the BRICS Expert Council-Russia, Russia's Sherpa in the Women's Twenty, and Vice Rector at HSE University.

โœ”in the midst of shifting geopolitical landscapes, the role of civil society is gaining prominence, with charity emerging as a crucial element of international dialogue

โœ”some forecasts suggest that the annual activities of non-profit organisations and charitable entities globally could soar to $859 billion, a figure comparable to the GDP of an entire nation

โœ”fostering civil dialogue within #BRICS is crucial

โœ”it was through Russia's initiative that BRICS Civil Forums have been convened since 2015, culminating in the Kazan Declaration of 2024, which established the BRICS Civil Councilโ€”a framework designed to facilitate sustainable interaction among the civil societies of member nations

โœ”a notable example of successful humanitarian initiatives within this Civil Track was the International Blind Football Tournament held in Moscow in December 2024

Summing up the insights from the discussion, participants underscored the necessity of uniting the efforts of all stakeholdersโ€”from government agencies to local communitiesโ€”in advancing the humanitarian agenda. They identified support for charity, expansion of civil interaction channels, and the development of joint projects as pivotal areas for future cooperation among the BRICS nations.
