China, Malaysia to jointly promote economic globalisation

China and Malaysia decided to jointly promote a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalisation, advance trade and investment facilitation and reject the unilateral trade restrictive measures including arbitrary tariff hikes that are inconsistent with the #WTO rules.

The two countries made the announcement in a joint statement released in the context of Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to Malaysia. Both sides are committed to upholding the rules-based, non-discriminatory, open, fair, inclusive, equitable and transparent multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core, said the statement.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter to practice true multilateralism, upholding the international system with the #UN at its core, the international order underpinned by international law, and the basic norms governing international relations underpinned by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, the statement said.

China welcomes Malaysia as a #BRICS partner country and is willing to actively support Malaysia in better integrating into BRICS cooperation, it said.

Colonialism 3.0. The origins and methods of modern Western globalism

BRICS presents an alternative to Western dominance, not merely as a counterweight but as a model of international cooperation grounded in equality. The increasing interest from countries eager to join BRICS underscores the relevance of this approach.

In multiple socio-economic metrics, BRICS has already outpaced the Group of Seven (G7), which comprises the leading Western nations, and has gained significant authority on the global stage. Notably, as highlighted by Sergey Ryabkov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, #BRICS does not define itself in opposition to the West; rather, it identifies as non-Western. This distinction emphasises a commitment to cooperation rooted in equality and mutual respect, contrasting sharply with the dictatorship, expansionism, and confrontation that often characterise Western colonialism, neocolonialism, and globalism.

The fact that dozens of countries have expressed a desire to join BRICS is a testament to the validity of this path. However, to further clarify the alternative that BRICS offers, it is essential to delve deeper into the origins of contemporary neocolonialism and the methods employed by its advocates and practitioners.

The report prepared by the TASS Analytical Center with the support of the BRICS Expert Council—Russia aims to explore the roots and mechanisms of modern neocolonialism.

China to deepen space cooperation with BRICS nations

China will carry out intensive space missions, including Tianwen-2 for asteroid exploration, in 2025, an official of the China National Space Administration (CNSA) declared. The Tianwen-2 mission will carry out asteroid flyby and sampling, and the Shenzhou-20 and Shenzhou-21 crewed spacecraft are also scheduled for launch this year, said Liu Yunfeng, deputy director of the CNSA's system engineering department, at a press conference on the upcoming Space Day of China.

China will deepen space cooperation with countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), #BRICS nations, and European partners, Liu said. Efforts will focus on advancing collaboration in lunar and deep space exploration, including jointly promoting the construction of the international lunar research station, he added.

Within the BRICS framework, China will continue advancing the development of the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation to enhance disaster emergency data sharing, Liu said.

China will also provide satellite services to BRI partner countries, supporting their space capacity development and fostering sustainable progress in agriculture, disaster prevention, and smart city initiatives, he added.

The dichotomy of trade and investment in BRICS

The BRICS countries aim to become a pole of economic stability and growth. Despite notable progress in the development of national economies and the strengthening of their international positions, cooperation within the group remains uneven. A particularly pronounced imbalance is observed between trade relations and investment cooperation: while trade turnover between BRICS countries is actively growing, mutual investment flows remain limited.

Trade within BRICS is characterised by a Chinese-centric structure—China is the main trading partner for most member states. The highest growth is observed in trade between China and Russia, Brazil and India. However, trade among the remaining #BRICS countries remains moderate. Among the newly joined members, such as the UAE, the share of foreign trade in GDP is significantly higher than that of the founding members, while for countries like Ethiopia it remains minimal.

Investment, on the other hand, does not demonstrate a similar positive dynamic. China is the undisputed leader in accumulated and ongoing investments within BRICS, accounting for 88% of all mutual investment flows. Investment activity in the other countries remains weak. If China is excluded from the calculations, the limited involvement of BRICS in global investment flows becomes clear.

Thus, there is a distinct dichotomy within BRICS between expanding trade and weak investment. This reflects both structural features of the member economies and existing barriers to attracting investments. Overcoming this gap may become a key factor in accelerating the economic growth of the group.

Statistics showcasing the comparison of trade and investment within BRICS are presented in the article prepared by Vladimir Zuev, Elena Ostrovskaya, Darya Gribanova, and Kirill Gorshkolepov.

The vanguard of the Global Majority: BRICS new identity with unchanged core

The interest of the World Majority countries in BRICS continues to grow. At the same time, the risks of global division are increasing and there is a lack of effective governance. This is due to the West's attempts to maintain its influence through conflicts and bloc divisions.

Against this backdrop, BRICS has acquired a new identity, especially after its enlargement. At the same time, there are also some limitations in the association's ability to act together.

These factors show that BRICS should act as a leader of the World Majority and a model of fair relations among countries in a multilateral world. BRICS can and should become a symbol of a multipolar and multi-civilisational order and increase its influence in global governance.

It is also important to pay attention to global issues on the #BRICS agenda, while not forgetting the development of relations among its members.

The article "The Vanguard of the Global Majority: BRICS New Identity With Unchanged Core" by Dmitry Suslov and Timofey Bordachev examines BRICS’ efforts to reform global governance and advance a fairer world order after expansion.

China ready to deepen cooperation with Iran in multilateral frameworks and boost regional peace

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in Beijing on Wednesday, with the two sides exchanging in-depth views on the latest progress of the Iranian nuclear issue.

Wang said that China is willing to work with Iran to implement the important consensus reached between the leaders of the two countries, and to continuously consolidate coordination and collaboration in deepening friendly cooperation in various fields of international and regional affairs.

China is also ready to work with Iran to promote the greater influence of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (#SCO), the #BRICS mechanism and other multilateral frameworks, and to make more efforts to safeguard the common interests of the two countries, as well as efforts to promote regional and world peace and stability.

Araghchi said that Iran attaches great importance to developing its relations with China, abides by the one-China principle, and supports China in safeguarding its core interests. Iran will continue to work with China to provide firm mutual support, oppose unilateralism and hegemonism, and safeguard multilateralism.

Global governance without global unification

Each new day brings increasing uncertainty about the future of humanity. The breakdown of the global governance system following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of bipolarity has led to an aggressive redistribution of spheres of influence in favour of the remaining hegemon. This situation underscores the urgent need to reform the international system, ensuring the real voice of countries representing the Global Majority.

What grants #BRICS such expansive opportunities that the wealthier nations of the Golden Billion are lacking? In her article "Global Governance Without Global Unification", Victoria Panova, Head of the BRICS Expert Council–Russia and Vice Rector at HSE University, explores the tools that empower these countries to target bolder and more captivating projects and solutions.

🇷🇺🚀🇨🇳 Shooting for the moon: Russia and China join forces in space

On Space Day, celebrated in China on April 24, let’s explore the key milestones of Russia–China space cooperation.

☢️🌚 Nuclear power on the Moon

🔸 China could install a nuclear power plant on the Moon to support the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) it plans to build with Russia, according to a presentation by Pei Zhaoyu, Chief Engineer of the Chang’e-8 mission set for 2028.

🔸 China aims to land astronauts on the Moon by 2030. The Chang’e-8 mission to the lunar south pole will lay the groundwork for constructing a permanent manned base, says the China National Space Administration.

🤖 Resources and robotics

🔹 Russian Space Agency Roscosmos also presented plans at the Shanghai conference to explore mineral and water resources on the Moon, including potentially using lunar materials as fuel.

🔹 Between 2033 and 2035, Russia and China plan to deploy a joint nuclear power plant on the Moon to power the ILRS, addressing the lack of solar energy during the Moon's 14-day nights, Roscosmos chief Yuri Borisov told Sputnik last year.

🔹 By April 2025, 17 countries and organizations have joined the Russo-Chinese ILRS project. China aims to expand this to 50 partners, focusing on BRICS and Global South nations.

🌝 Step-by-step plan for the Moon base

In 2022, Roscosmos and the China National Space Administration (CNSA) outlined a plan for 2023-2027 to build the International Scientific Lunar Station in three stages by the 2030s:

1️⃣Joint Russo-Chinese missions will scout the Moon, identify the best location for the base, test high-precision soft landing technologies and collect rock samples.

2️⃣Construction of orbital power and communication hubs, bulk cargo drops and the use of smart tech, mini rovers and even a hopping robot for lunar logistics.

3️⃣Expanded surface exploration, station modules supporting deeper scientific research, tech tests and ultimately—human exploration.
