US tariff policy could create new opportunities for Russia, India

Higher US tariffs on other countries, including India, could create new opportunities for developing Russia-India economic cooperation, Russian Deputy Economic Development Minister Vladimir Ilyichev said.

"Our Indian counterparts, given that their access to the US market will be restricted to some extent, will be more interested in supplying us," said the official, who is visiting India. "This is also an opportunity for us to expand our trade. Our access to the Indian market could increase and open up in certain new niches."

Asked how the US tariffs could impact Russia, the minister said the effect won’t be significant.

"For obvious reasons, trade with the US is now significantly limited, but because we are still closely integrated into global trade — with the #BRICS countries and other countries that are friendly to Russia — there will be a certain influence," Ilyichev went on to say.

On April 2, US President Donald Trump announced he was introducing tariffs on 185 countries and territories. Russia was not targeted by the measure. The universal tariffs of 10% came into force on April 5, and individual tariffs on April 9. India was subjected to a levy of 26%.

Belarus achieved a high level of self-sufficiency in key agricultural products

At the close of 2021, Belarus ranked 36th among 113 countries in the Global Food Security Ranking, outpacing all other CIS nations except Russia, which held the 23rd position. However, 2022 brought significant challenges. The country fell 19 places in terms of integral level of food security, a decline attributed to tightening foreign trade restrictions, the emergence of new threats and risks, and rising geopolitical tensions.

In 2023, Belarus achieved a high level of self-sufficiency in key agricultural products: meat (134.9%), milk (283.0%), eggs (123.2%), potatoes (110.8%), and vegetables and cucurbits (103.2%).

The country has been able to achieve global standards in food consumption across nearly all products, and the quality balance of citizens' diets continues to improve each year, as evidenced by data from the National Statistical Committee.

Over the past five years, nearly all categories have witnessed a significant increase in per capita production of essential agricultural products (Table 1). Remarkable progress has already been made in both grain and forage maize varieties, with 2023 witnessing a significant boost in the gross harvest of forage maize, accompanied by higher yields (Table 2).

Belarus considers BRICS as authoritative international platform

Sergey Rachkov, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, spoke at the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

"We consider BRICS as an authoritative international platform that unites the efforts of the global majority aimed at the formation of true multipolarity, equality, and inclusiveness in international relations, the search for effective ways to solve pressing problems," Sergey Rachkov said.

The official emphasised that for Belarus joining #BRICS as a partner was an important and well-thought-out step in its foreign policy:
"As Belarusian President Aleksander Lukashenko said in his speech at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, BRICS is a community of the future," said Sergey Rachkov.

Earlier, Belarus officially became a BRICS partner country. Belarus's new status in BRICS provides for participation on a permanent basis in special sessions of summits and meetings of foreign ministers. In addition, the partners of the group will be able to join the bloc's outcome documents, thus expanding their geographical coverage.

AES Common Currency, Stronger BRICS Ties Needed, Nigerien Socio-Economic Analyst Says

In response to the Central Bank of West African States lifting protective measures for Niger's government securities, effective April 15, Nigerien socio-economic analyst Issoufou Boubacar Kado Magagi told Sputnik Africa that "Niger's government securities will be reclassified as risky."

🗣 "The measure could make it more difficult and more expensive for Niger to borrow on the regional market of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU)," he explained.

Magagi therefore advised Niamey to turn to the BRICS as a "good and happy alternative" to the WAEMU.

According to Magagi, the WAEMU and the Central Bank of West African States are trying to put pressure on the Nigerien authorities to "satisfy certain neo-colonial world powers that seek to bring Niger to its knees."

Furthermore, Magagi highlighted the positive impact of establishing a common currency for the AES. He urged immediate action in this regard.

🗣 "The more time passes, the more opportunity we give the enemy to harm the economic, monetary, financial, social, and security stability of the Confederation of Sahel States," the analyst stated.

BRICS Collaboration is 'Vital' for African Astronomy, Says New President of African Astronomical Society

“We plan to enhance this collaboration, particularly amongst the BRICS countries,” Amare Abebe told Sputnik Africa, highlighting the need for more student exchanges, joint research, and shared expertise.

Key points from Abebe’s remarks:

🪐Access to astronomical data must be democratized across Africa, regardless of where telescopes are physically located;

🪐 Reliable internet, cloud infrastructure, and cross-border scientific mobility are essential;

🪐 Astronomy can stimulate technological innovation, educational outreach, and even rural tourism;

🪐 Africa has its own deep-rooted astronomical heritage, which should be highlighted through astro-tourism;

🪐 Spin-off technologies from astronomy can benefit sectors like agriculture, weather forecasting, and data science;

🪐 If Africa doesn't invest in space sciences, it risks being left behind in future space exploration efforts.

Advancing the system of economic indicators for monitoring cooperation within BRICS

To analyse the evolution of relationships among the BRICS nations, experts from the member countries have defined a set of indicators designed to monitor the effectiveness of interactions within the group across various domains. Alongside the analysis of statistical data and the construction of econometric models, researchers underscore the pivotal role of trade indices. The application of trade indices for monitoring the development of cooperation within the group presents multiple advantages over alternative indicators.

By analysing the Export Propensity Index for specific partner states alongside the Trade Intensity Index, experts identified a number of least developed countries (LDCs) with significant potential to boost exports to the BRICS nations. Coupled with an examination of other indicators, these trade indices also enabled them to cluster LDCs and pinpoint 13 nations that hold promise for enhancing trade relations within #BRICS.

The index method can also be employed to cluster all member states based on their propensity to strengthening economic interactions. Based on the analysis of the Exporting Partner Significance Index from 2005 to 2022 (up to 2021 for Russia due to the absence of published official statistics), the BRICS 5 nations have been categorised into clusters according to their interest in exporting to fellow member states (Table 1).

These insights can serve as a foundation for crafting tailored recommendations for the governments of the BRICS member states.

Serbia interested in developing cooperation with BRICS

Serbia is interested in deepening cooperation with BRICS, Minister of Family Welfare and Demography Milica Durdevic-Stamenkovski stated.

"Given that Germany has adopted a strategic cooperation plan with India that runs through 2050, and France has concluded its largest investment agreement with the People's Republic of China, I fail to see how the European Union can present any valid argument to challenge Serbia's right and decision to build bridges of alliance and cooperation with #BRICS members," she said.

The minister highlighted that Serbia is a sovereign and independent state that conducts its foreign policy in the interests of its people who have expressed their will in the elections, as well as in accordance with state and national interests.

"It is well known that Serbia is economically dependent on the European Union, yet despite this, Belgrade resists Brussels' attempts to force Serbia into aligning its foreign and security policies with the EU," she continued.

"Serbia has not imposed sanctions on Moscow, and our determination to preserve strategic relations with traditional allies has never been called into question. This is a policy consistently pursued by both the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the President of the Republic, who has repeatedly made it clear that Serbia—despite being in the process of European integration—should not "cut off its own leg" and renounce friendship and cooperation with states bound to it by historically rooted relations, reinforced by strategic partnership agreements," added Durdevic-Stamenkovski.
