Ethiopia promotes green legacy initiative as a model for Africa
Ethiopia's green legacy initiative (GLI) is gaining recognition as a regional model for environmental restoration and climate change mitigation. Launched in 2019, the initiative has successfully planted over 25 billion seedlings, surpassing its original target of 20 billion, while rehabilitating degraded land and creating green jobs.
GLI also focuses on agroforestry, fostering economic opportunities through products like timber, honey, spices, and carbon trading. The initiative aligns with Ethiopia's climate resilient green economy strategy and sustainable development goals, inspiring similar efforts across Africa and #BRICS countries.

Article summary: Patenting for profitability — green energy innovations and firm performance in BRICS countries
The recent study by Elena Makeeva, Konstantin Popov, and Olga Teplova from HSE University explores the transformative potential of green energy innovations within BRICS countries.
Despite advancements in renewable energy technologies, the global energy system remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels. The research highlights how "green" patents can bridge this gap, contributing to environmental sustainability and improving corporate financial performance.
The problem:
BRICS countries face significant challenges in transitioning to renewable energy due to disparities in technological advancements and reliance on fossil fuels. While global investments in clean energy are rising, #BRICS nations must address gaps in innovation and policy to meet renewable energy targets effectively.
Key findings:
✔ Green patents and financial performance: renewable energy patents positively influence return on invested capital (ROIC), while nuclear and combustion technologies also show strong financial benefits
✔ CO2 emissions impact: higher CO2 emissions are linked to lower financial performance, emphasising the need for cleaner energy solutions
✔ Policy gaps: the study identifies inconsistencies in technological progress across BRICS nations, highlighting the importance of adopting legislative models from developed countries to promote green finance and innovation
The authors argue that prioritising green technologies is essential for achieving sustainable growth and addressing climate challenges. By leveraging green patents, BRICS countries can enhance both environmental outcomes and economic profitability.
This research offers valuable insights for policymakers and businesses aiming to balance sustainability with profitability. Read more about how BRICS is shaping a greener future through innovation.

"This is a choice that today justifies all its relevance. It's a choice that has enabled us to face up to the situation and achieve tangible results on the ground," Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore told Sputnik Africa following a meeting of the foreign ministers of Russia and the AES in Moscow on Thursday.
The "adversity" of ECOWAS enabled the AES countries to realize their potential, according to the top diplomat.
"From that moment on, we understood that we had to rely on our own strengths, work on domestic capacities with the support of sincere and serious partners like Russia, and face up to this situation," he added.
Despite its withdrawal from ECOWAS, Ouagadougou "enjoys very good cooperation with neighboring countries," Traore noted.

US Pursuing Political Objectives in Mali Through USAID: Malian FM
🗣 "The way American aid is provided in Mali did not allow Malians to set their own priorities or choose the NGOs that would deliver it, and the resources in question did not even go through the national budget," Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop told Sputnik, noting that African countries must learn from this.

SCO Considers Market Integration with BRICS
Looking ahead, the markets of the SCO and BRICS may converge, the Secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation reported to Izvestia.
Victoria Panova, Head of the BRICS Expert Council—Russia and Vice Rector at HSE University, proposed that initial cooperation between the two groups could focus on developing joint plans for information exchange and environmental collaboration.
In the field of green finance, both groups could develop mechanisms to provide tax incentives, stimulate the issuance of green bonds and measures to improve the credit rating of issuers. The SCO Business Council and Interbank Consortium could spearhead these efforts on behalf of #SCO, while #BRICS might contribute through green funds and information platforms dedicated to green financing for businesses and NGOs, Victoria summarised.
Currently, the SCO includes Belarus, Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and Iran. BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, UAE, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Indonesia as full members.

Could China’s strategic PIVOT to the Global South spell TROUBLE for US?
China could pull off a swift “recalibration” of its overseas trade in response to Donald Trump’s tariff war, veteran financial analyst Paul Goncharoff told Sputnik.
Why Washington should be worried?
🔸 China-BRICS trade is now worth over $1 trillion
🔸 China's trade with Russia reached a record high of $237 billion in 2024, Chinese customs data shows
🔸 China has been diversifying its export markets, with exports to the ASEAN group of nations surging by 12% last year
🔸 China’s Belt and Road Initiative was designed to secure multiple supply chains – many of those are now operational and never extended into the US
If China boosts its exports to non-US markets by 8.5% annually, it could offset its entire exposure to American export volume within just two years, Goncharoff explained.

The BRYXPLORE 1.0 International Youth Cultural Forum, which brings together linguists from the BRICS countries, is taking place in Cairo. Young scientists from Russia, Belarus, Iran, China, Ethiopia and Russia gathered at the Russian House in Cairo. The programme includes getting acquainted with the linguistic and cultural diversity of the BRICS countries, discussing joint projects in culture and education. Participants will also learn about opportunities for young professionals offered by #BRICS and Rossotrudnichestvo.
The forum participants noted that youth associations are one of the main driving forces of cooperation. Youth is the most mobile, the fastest growing community in terms of the number of initiatives. Youth co-operation is one of the key components of BRICS.
