Belarus and Russia discussed cooperation within BRICS

First deputy foreign minister of Belarus Sergey Lukashevich met with Russian deputy foreign minister and BRICS sherpa Sergey Ryabkov in Moscow to discuss the expansion of Belarus' participation in BRICS activities. Belarus officially became a BRICS partner state on 1 January 2025, which was a significant step in its integration into the bloc.

During the talks, both sides emphasised Belarus' readiness to actively contribute to #BRICS activities in three key pillars:
➖politics and security
➖economy and finance
➖culture and humanitarian ties

Lukashevich noted the importance of improving the international monetary and financial system and utilising the resources of the New Development Bank to implement investment projects in the BRICS space.

"The parties confirmed their intention to deepen cooperation within the BRICS framework in the interests of forming a fair and equitable multipolar architecture of international relations," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The dialogue reflects Belarus' growing role within BRICS, which coincides with Russia's vision of developing multilateral relations and strengthening global partnership. The meeting underscores the commitment of both countries to promote cooperation in politics, economics and cultural exchange.

Bolivia seeks full membership in BRICS and stronger cooperation with Russia

Bolivia's minister of hydrocarbons and energy Alejandro Gallardo has reiterated the country's interest in full membership of BRICS. Having gained partner status on 1 January 2025 under president Luis Arce, Bolivia sees deepening integration with BRICS as one of its key foreign policy objectives.

"Of course, we are interested in becoming a full member of BRICS. We believe that for this it is necessary to go through certain processes within the BRICS. We are doing all this gradually, while using all possible tools that will help improve the situation in our country with the help of the experience that these states have."

Bolivia sees #BRICS as a platform for strengthening its position in a multipolar world, promoting industrialisation and social development. Membership in the bloc will allow the country to attract investment and use the experience of major economies to implement infrastructure initiatives.

Russia responds to US concerns over BRICS financial reforms

Deputy foreign minister Sergey Ryabkov has said Russia is responding "seriously yet calmly" to US concerns over BRICS activities, stressing that the bloc aims to modernise financial systems rather than replace the dollar.

Key developments:
✔Financial architecture: BRICS seeks to "modernise accounting and financial architecture" to prevent monopolistic practices from failing, with Ryabkov noting that "some foundations have already been laid"

✔Brazilian leadership: Russia expects further progress during Brazil's chairship, citing increased #BRICS membership and practical achievements in various sectors

✔Global status: Ryabkov emphasised BRICS' "modern image" and its recognition as a key player in international governance, arguing that its dynamics remain independent of bilateral ties between Russia and the US

"We are not developing any alternatives to the dollar within the BRICS framework. We are simply talking about modernising the accounting and finance architecture to prevent harm from players abusing their monopoly," Ryabkov clarified.

🕊 1st meeting of Russian NPO representatives as part of BRICS civil track 4 March 2024: Participants discussed the event plan for the BRICS Civil Track in 2024, as well as the thematic areas of the forum’s working groups. Victoria Panova, Head of the BRICS Expert Council—Russia, delivered a welcoming speech at the meeting. She spoke about the priorities of the Russian BRICS chairship in 2024 in the framework of the civil track, coordinated by the BRICS Expert Council–Russia.

🕊 BRICS Civil Forum 3–4 July 2024: The forum was held under the theme "Right to Development: Equality, Equity, and Justice" and gathered 650 delegates from 20 nations. During the Inaugural Session, Victoria Panova, Head of the BRICS Expert Council—Russia and Co-сhair of the BRICS Civil Forum, emphasised the importance of collectively addressing sustainable development challenges. In the course of the event, the Civil Track as the most vibrant area in #BRICS strategic partnership. The forum was concluded with the signing of the Declaration of Civil Society Representatives of the Countries of the Global Majority.

🕊 BRICS international futuristic forum “Smart civilization: horizontal linkages between BRICS civil society organisations, universities and innovative companies – key to shaping a common future” 10–11 July 2024: The forum brought together over 500 attendees from 20 countries. Discussions focused on specific projects for enhancing humanitarian ties under the BRICS framework. It was proposed to create rankings to assess the development of civil society, human rights status, and democracy levels, the BRICS Network of Future Studies Clubs, a permanent secretariat for BRICS universities and to develop indices to assess the level of humanitarian interconnections and influence among the BRICS countries.

The report presents the dates, course, and results of more than 170 significant meetings and events held under Russia's BRICS chairship within the strategic partnership.

How Trump’s tariffs will affect Russia and BRICS countries

The U.S. administration has introduced increased import tariffs on goods from 185 countries. Russia is not included on this list.

Trade within the BRICS bloc is already flourishing, as economic ties among these leading emerging markets continue to deepen. At the same time, BRICS nations are becoming increasingly attractive partners for the fast-growing countries of the Global Majority. In the face of the new protectionist trade policy, this shift is only accelerating.

BRICS countries have been actively building a dense network of intergovernmental cooperation across the Global Majority. Trump’s tariff-driven approach is likely to push more countries toward the #BRICS framework and displace the US dollar from its entrenched role in the world economy, as many emerging markets seek to reduce their reliance on U.S. trade and explore alternative partnerships.

✔️1st meeting of BRICS sherpas/sous-sherpas 29 January – 2 February 2024: The importance of advancing Russian initiatives was underscored, particularly the launch of the Integrated Early Warning System for Preventing the Risk of Mass Infectious Diseases, the establishment of the BRICS Centre for Industrial Competencies in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, the formation of a BRICS Medical Association and a dedicated medical journal, as well as the strengthening of cooperation in the fields of transport and tourism.

✔️2nd BRICS sherpas/sous-sherpas meeting 22–23 April 2024: The participants discussed current issues on the agenda for Russia’s #BRICS Chairship in 2024, including the implementation of decisions made during the XV BRICS Summit.

✔️4th BRICS sherpas/sous-sherpas meeting 17-24 October 2024: Discussions centred on preparing the draft Declaration for the XVI BRICS Summit. The participants addressed a broad range of issues concerning the strategic partnership within the BRICS framework.

✔️5th BRICS sherpas/sous-sherpas meeting 26–28 November 2024: The meeting brought together Sherpas and Sous-Sherpas of the BRICS countries to reflect on the outcomes of their collaborative efforts across the three key pillars of cooperation: Politics and Security, Economics and Finance, and Cultural and People-to-People Exchanges. Participants highlighted the significance of initiatives such as the establishment of BRICS Grain Exchange and Geological and Investment Platforms. The delegation of the BRICS Expert Council—Russia, led by Victoria Panova, also participated in the meeting.

BRICS states discuss digital solutions for sustainable development in Brazil

A seminar on ICT initiatives was held in Brasilia, organised by the BRICS working group with the support of the Brazilian Ministry of communications. The event focused on sustainable development, energy efficiency and the circular economy.

Brazil demonstrated its emergency disaster alert system, which can alert citizens even in silent mode, and the computers for inclusion project, which has delivered more than 58,000 refurbished devices to educational centres.

China shared ideas on low-carbon ICT standards, while South Africa emphasised energy-efficient 5G networks and circular economy research. India and Egypt focused on digital disaster warning systems.

The workshop reaffirmed #BRICS commitment to using digital solutions for environmental sustainability and economic growth.
