Know Allah ﷻ in times of ease and He ﷻ will know you in times of hardship

On the authority of Anas that the Prophetﷺ said, ''While in the belly of the whale, when Yunus (alayhis-salam) was supplicating, the Angels said, 'This is a familiar voice, yet coming from a strange land!' Allah said, 'Do you not know who this is?' They asked, 'Who is it?' He replied, 'My servant, Yunus.' They said, 'Yunus, Your servant, the one whose deeds have always been accepted and whose supplication has al ways been answered?' He said, 'Yes.' They said, 'Lord! Will you not show mercy on him in this time of adversity by virtue of what he used to do in times of ease?' He replied, 'Of course,' and ordered the whale to cast him out on the desert shore."

Dahhāk ibn Qays said, 'Remember Allah in times of ease and He will remember you in times of adversity. Yunus(alayhis-saltim) would remember Allah, then when he was swallowed by the whale, Allahﷻ said,

Had he not ˹constantly˺ glorified ˹Allah˺
he would have certainly remained in its belly until the Day of Resurrection.

Pharaoh was an oppressor, heedless of the remembrance of Allah. When he was drowning, he said, "I believe!" and Allahﷻ said,

˹He was told,˺ “Now ˹you believe˺? But you always disobeyed and were one of the corruptors.

Rishdīn ibn Said said, 'A man asked Abu Darda' to advise him. He replied, "Remember Allah in times of ease and He will re member you in times of hardship.'

The Hadith about the three people who entered a cave only to be blocked in by a falling boulder also lends weight to this; they were saved because they invoked Allah, adducing righteous deeds they had previously performed while in a state of ease: being dutiful to parents, leaving a lewd act, and fulfilng a trust that would not have been known to people at large.

Extracted from a very beautiful book called the “Legacy of the prophet” by Imam Ibn Rajab Al Hanbali This book is an explanation of the advice given to ibn Abbas by the prophet ﷺ. It was heavily recommended to us by Shiekh Abdullah Al Ubaid حفظه الله while going though the book Buloogh Al Maram

As mentioned by As-Safarini in the Sharh of Manthumatil Adāb he mentions one of the Salaf said:

‎“There will come a time upon the people where their silence and sleep are from their best deeds.”

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen رحمه الله said,

Ibn al-Qayyim

“What we love today will catch up with what we hate tomorrow, and what we hate today will catch up with what we love tomorrow.”

O you who believe! Spend of that with which We have provided for you, before a Day comes when there will be no bargaining, nor friendship, nor intercession. And it is the disbelievers who are the Zaalimoon (wrongdoers)” [al-Baqarah 2:254]

“The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allaah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allaah gives manifold increase to whom He wills. And Allaah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower.

Those who spend their wealth in the Cause of Allaah, and do not follow up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury, their reward is with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve”
[al-Baqarah 2:261-262]
Ibn al Qayyim رحمه الله mentions the following,

“The joys of this worldly life are dreams of the slumber, or like a dwindling shade.

If it causes some laughter, it causes many tears, if it brings happiness for a day, it will bring despair for a year.

If it gives little pleasure, it denies as much for a long time, and no household has been filled with good except that it has also been filled with sadness and tears.”

📚[Fear The Temptations of The Dunya]
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah
(may Allah have mercy on him) said:

A man asked one of the salaf: How much Qur'an should we read?

He said: Equivalent to the amount of happiness you want.

Ibn ‘Abdil-Barr Raḥimahullāh: “Dunyā (this world) and Ākhirah (Hereafter) are (like) two wives, if you try to please one of them the other one gets displeased.”

Ibn Jamah رحمه الله said:

“The student of knowledge should utilise his youth and free time to gain as much as he can, and should not be deceived by the temptation of procrastination. Every hour that passes of his life is crucial and will not be replaced.”

Ibn al-Jawzī رحمه الله said,

“Let a healthy person think about the times when he was sick. What happened to those times? They went away yet the reward remained.

Similarly, the sweetness of following lusts escapes sooner, but the punishment remains.”

📚[Captured Thoughts by Ibn al Jawzi pg. 611]
'Īsā عليه السلام used to say: "Do not speak much without the mention of Allāh for you will harden your hearts. A hard heart is far from Allāh, but you do not know. Do not look at the wrong actions of people as if you were lords. Look at your wrong actions as if you were slaves. Some people are afflicted by wrong action and see people are protected from it. Be merciful to the people of affliction and praise Allāh for His protection."
