Abu Qatadah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked about fasting the day of ‘Arafat, and he said, “It will expiate the sins of the previous and upcoming years.” Then, the Prophet was asked about fasting the day of ‘Ashura, and he said, “It will expiate the sins of the past year.”

Our respected father and sheikh, sheikh sulayman al ruhayli حفظه الله mentioned that one should have the intention of fasting on the Day of Arafah as well as Thursday as was the practise of the prophet ﷺ where he ﷺ mentioned deeds are presented to Allāh on this day and the prophet ﷺ loved for his deeds to be presented whilst he was fasting.
*A Sunnah Very Few Act Upon | A Complete Du'ā After Wuḍū*
From Abū Mūsā al-Ash'arī Raḍi-Allāhu ‘Anhu who said: “I came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ with water for ablution so he performed Wuḍū then I heard him say;
'Allaahummagh Fir Lee Dhanbee Wa Wassi’ Lee Fee Daaree Wa Baarik Lee Fee Rizqee’
(O Allāh forgive me my sins and make spacious for me my residence and bless me in my provision)
So I said: O Prophet of Allāh I heard you supplicating with such and such, he ﷺ said: 'And has it left anything out?’.”
[رواه النسائي في السنن الكبرى ٩٠٠٨ ، وصححه الألباني في صحيح الجامع ١٢٦٥]
al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mubārakpūree Raḥimahullāh said: “'Has it left anything out’ means that it encompasses every goodness of the world and the Hereafter i.e a complete supplication.”
