Ibn Kathīr said: “Al-Bayhaqī narrated from ar-Rabīʿ saying: ‘Ash-Shāfiʿī sent me with a letter from Egypt to Aḥmad bin Ḥanbal. I came to him while he was returning from the Fajr prayer, so I presented the letter to him; he said, “Have you read it?” I said, “No.” So he took it and read it, and his eyes welled up with tears.

‎I said, “Abū ʿAbdillāh, what does it contain?” He said, it mentions that he saw the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) in a dream and he said, ’Write to Aḥmad bin Ḥanbal and convey to him, from me, the salām, and say to him: Indeed, you will be tried and called to a statement that the Qurʾān is created, but do not respond to them. Allāh will elevate you as a sign until the Day of Judgement.’”

Sh Salih al-Fawzan:

"This is a matter that we must place importance on, so that we may avoid excessiveness and negligence.

We are not with those who reject Fiqh and say: "These are merely statements of men" so they end up getting lost.

Neither did they learn Fiqh nor are they from those who can derive rulings and interpretations. So they went astray and caused their followers to go astray.

And neither are we with those who blind follow, and are fanatical towards their Madhabs, and follow the statement of their Imam even if it opposes the Hadith and say:

"I will follow the statement of my Imam even if it opposes the evidence because he is more knowledgable of the evidence than me"
So these two types of people are opposites.

And *what is correct is the middle position*, we accept Fiqh, accept the statements of the Imāms and study Fiqh, because it is a way of reaching the truth. But we *do not blind follow* anyone, rather we distinguish between the statements which are backed up by *evidence* and those which aren't. And if we do not know something it is upon us to *ask the people of knowledge*."

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ entered upon a young man in the throes of death and asked him: “How do you feel?”

The man said: “I hope (good) from Allāh O Prophet and I fear for my sins.”

So the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “These two (fear and hope) do not combine in a slave’s heart during the likes of this point (meaning the last struggle at death) except Allāh will give him that which he hopes for and will save him from that which he fears.”

Al-Awzāʿī said :

عليك بآثار من سلف وإن رفضك الناس ، وإياك وآراء الرجال وإن زخرفوه لك بالقول ، فإن الأمر ينجلي وأنت على طريق مستقيم.

You should adhere to the narrations of the Salaf, even if the people reject you.

And beware of the opinions of men, even if they adorn them for you with their words, for the matter will become clear while you are on a straight path.
