Ibn al-Qayyim

“It is well known, by experience and observation, that love of this world inspires all sorts of sins, hidden and open; especially such sins which are committed due to dependence upon it."

[Excellence of Patience & Gratefulness]
Ḥasan al-Baṣrī رحمه الله said to Mutarraf Ibn ‘Abdillāh: “Advise your companions!”

‎He replied: “I am scared to say something to them that I do not practise myself.”

‎Ḥasan said: “May Allāh have mercy upon you! Who is there amongst us who does everything he says? This is how Shaytān attains his objective, so that no one enjoins goodness and forbids evil.”

[Tafsīr al-Qurṭubī, 1/367]
Al-Qasim b. Muḥammad, the grandson of Abū Bakr رحمه الله said: "In my time the people were not impressed by speech, they were impressed by actions. Anyone can say whatever he wants."

● {Kitab Al-Zuhd p.354}
Prophet Musā said to Allāh: "O' my Lord, people are saying things about me which are not true."

So Allāh revealed to him: "O' Musā, I did not make that privilege for Myself, so how can I make it for you?"

Do you want to find joy and content in making wudhu? Read the following:

Nu’aym ibn Abdullah reported that he saw Abu Hurairah perform ablution. He washed his face and his hands up to his arms. He then washed his feet until he reached up to the shanks and then said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say:

Verily, my nation will come on the Day of Resurrection as brightly radiant from the traces of ablution. Whoever among you is able to extend his radiance, let him do so. [Sahih Muslim 246]

Your Prophet (ﷺ), the one you say you love more than anything, tells us that he’ll know who belongs to his Ummah by the light from them due to ablution. When Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) heard this, he put it into action right away. So, what about us? Ablution (wudhu) is an act of worship; do it to please your Lord, and you’ll find pleasure and content in return.

From the worship of Allah, one attains joy; *** That joy isn't found in worldly matters.
Ibn al Qayyim

“The believer who is sincere to Allāh is the happiest, most content, blessed and peaceful of all people. And this is the early paradise before the upcoming paradise.”

The Prophet said: (In a dream, I saw someone) whose head was being crushed with a stone (and he) was the one who learnt the Qur’an but never acted on it, and slept ignoring the compulsory prayers.

Shaykh ibn 'Uthaymin رحمه الله said:

"If you see yourself deteriorate, pick yourself up by repenting and seeking Allah’s forgiveness and by asking Him to keep you firm.

And don't become careless, and neither say: “in sha Allah, my imaan will become stronger” (without doing anything about it).

Instead from right now from the moment you feel that you are ill—you must implement the cure."

Tafsir Surah an-Nisa
Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said:

Istighfar is the greatest of good deeds.

So whoever feels there is a deficiency in his speech, or actions, or Rizq (provision), or the turnings of his heart, then he must adhere to Tawhid and Istighfar.

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

‎"The highest level of sincerity is that of the siddeeq; it is perfect submission to the Messenger ﷺ, accompanied by perfect sincerity towards the One Who sent him."

‎[Madaarij as-Saalikeen | 2/258]
Abū Hurayrah said: "The heart is the king and the limbs are its soldiers, if the king is good, the soldiers will be good but if the king is vile, so too will be his soldiers."

Kill Yusuf or cast him out to some other land, so that the favor of your father may be given to you alone, and after that you can become a righteous people. [12:9]

In his commentary on this
ayah, Imam al-Baghawi wrote:

Muhammad ibn Ishaaq said, “What they did involved many sins including the cutting of blood ties, poor treatment of parents, lack of compassion towards a child who had done nothing wrong, making false promises to achieve their own aims, breaking their promises, and lying to their parents. But Allah pardoned them for all of that so that no one could lose hope of Allah’s mercy.”

[
Tafsir al-Baghawi 4/219]
On the authority of al-Hasan in a narration: ❝May Allaah have mercy upon the slave who speaks and benefits or remains silent and is saved.❞

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

If you are studying the deen and not realising your own ignorance then your ilm is not benefittng you. If it is only increasing you in arrogance then your intention is not sincere. Re-evaluate and start again.

I have discovered from my own experience that whenever someone increases in knowledge, they discover how much greater their ignorance is.”
