Khushoo'

Abu Darda reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The first thing to be taken from this nation will be humble reverence, until you will not see anyone in it with reverence.”

Ibn Baaz رحمه الله said,

“It is not permitted for the Muslims to accept a gift from the disbelievers in celebration of their festivities.”

[Al-Lajnah ad-Dā'iman]

Some narrations reported from the Salaf in explanation of what it means to protect oneself and one’s family as mentioned in Al-Tahrīm verse 6:

O you who believe! Protect yourselves and your families against a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, over which are (appointed) angels, stern and severe, and who disobey not the commands they receive from Allāh, but do that which they are commanded. [66:6]

· ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib – Allah be pleased with him:

Discipline them, teach them.

· Ibn ‘Abbās – Allah be pleased with him.

Stay obedient to Allāh, stay away from disobeying Allāh and command your families to remember Allāh, and He will save you from the Fire.

· Mujāhid – Allāh have mercy on him:

Fear Allāh and obey him (practice taqwā) and tell your families to practice taqwā.

· Qatādah – Allāh have mercy on him:

A person protects his family by telling them to obey Allāh and forbidding them from disobeying Him. He upholds Allāh’s commandments and helps his family to uphold them. So if you see some disobedience of Allāh you stop them from doing it, and you reprimand them.

It is reported that Al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr – Allāh be pleased with him – said during a sermon he was delivering in Homs:

“Total destruction lies in doing bad deeds during a time of calamity and tribulation.”

Imām ash-Shāfi'ī: “The one who doesn't love knowledge has no goodness in him and between you & him there shouldn't be any friendship.”

Real Success

Shaykh Muḥammad Ibn Ṣāliḥ al-‘Uthaymīn رحمه الله said: "Success is not attaining something from the dunya, (real) success is to be saved from hellfire and entering Jannah."

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

‎"From dignity is overlooking the lapses of the people and making them feel that you are unaware of any of their errors."

Al-Fuḍayl ibn ʻIyāḍ رحمه الله said:

“If I see a man from the people of innovation, it is as if I have seen a man from the hypocrites!”

Imam Ahmad رحمه الله said,

“We are poor people. If it wasn't for the covering of Allah, we would've surely been exposed and disgraced.”

• 3. Opposed & fought against him, and remained upon kufr (disbelief): e.g. Abu Lahab

Sh. Ibn al-'Uthaymeen Raḥimahullāh: “.. And as for the saying of some IDIOTS that it is not obligatory upon us to obey the rulers unless they are upright with perfect and complete uprightness, then this is a MISTAKE and this is WRONG and there is NO SUCH THING (of this sort) in the legislation, rather this is the MADH-HAB OF KHAWĀRIJ who wish from the rulers to be upright upon the Command of Allāh in EVERY affair.”

Ibn al-Qayyim Raḥimahullāh: “If the heart is hard like a stone, it does not purify itself, neither any advice affects it nor anything of the knowledge benefits it.”

Al-Fuḍayl b. ʿAyyad – Allāh have mercy on him – said:

Do not mix except with those who have good character; for the one who has good character brings nothing but good, whilst the one who has bad character brings nothing but evil.

[Al-Bayhaqī, Shuʿab Al-Īmān, 87044]

Muhammad ibn ‘Alā wrote to Muhammad ibn Yūsuf:

"يَا أَخِي مَنْ أَحَبَّ اللهَ أَحَبَّ أَنْ لا يَعْرِفَهُ النَّاسُ"

“O my brother! Whomsoever loves Allāh, then he loves for the people not to know him!”

[At-Tawāḍu’ Wal Khumūl: 36]

Ibn Qudamah رحمه الله said:

“Whoever realizes that the Dunya is like ice that melts away, and that the Akhirah is like a pearl that lasts on, his interest in selling the former for the latter will become stronger.”

‎Abu Na'im Ahmad ibn Abdallah al Asbahani رحمه الله stated:

‎“A man came to Imam Ahmad and praised him so he replied:

‎‘I make Allah my witness that I detest you in this speech and if you had known my sins you would have thrown sand over my head’.”

"من أراد أن يبكي على حال الأمة الإسلامية،
"Whoever wants to cry over the state of the Islamic Ummah,

فليجلس في بيته،
can sit in his house,

وليبكي إلى أن تبتلّ فُرشه،
and cry till his bedsheets are soaked..

لكن هذا العالم لا يرحم الضعفاء،
but this world doesn't have mercy on the weak,

ولا يحزن على الباكين،
nor does it have compassion for those who cry.

ليس إلّا أن تنهض،
There's no choice but that you get up,

ويكون لك مشروع، ويكون لك دور،
have a project and role.

ولا تضيّع وقتك،
Don’t waste your time

واجعل لنفسك قيمة حقيقيّة."
and make a true value out of yourself."

Qurtubi رحمه الله said,

“Kings and noblemen would avoid mentioning their wives by name or mentioning their name in public places.

Instead, they would refer to them using general terms like spouse, wife, family, dependent, etc.”
