A man insulted Imam Wakī’, but he did not respond to him.

He was told: “Won’t you respond to him?”

He said: “Then why did we learn knowledge?

[Rawdatul Uqalā: 116]
Ibn al-Qayyim

From the greatest reasons leading to tightening of one’s chest is:

• Fleeing from Allāh

• Having one’s heart attached to other (than Him).

• Neglecting His remembrance

• Having the love of others (in his heart).

[Zaad al-Ma’ad | Pg. 22-24]
‘Umar b. al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه: “If anyone of you knew what there is in saying to his brother; 'JazākAllāhu Khayran’ you would (say it) to each other a lot.”

From Abū Hurayrah Raḍi-Allāhu ‘Anhu who said: The Prophet Ṣallallāhu-‘Alaihi Wa Sallam said: “Do you know what is that makes most people enter Hellfire??!!”

They (the Companions) replied: “Allāh and His Messenger know best.”

He Ṣallallāhu-'Alaihi Wa Sallam said: “The two empty ones: the GENITALS and the MOUTH and do you know what is that makes most people enter Paradise??, it is TAQWĀ OF ALLĀH and GOOD CHARACTER.”

Fuḍayl b. ‘Iyāḍ said: “Depending on how much one underrates a sin, will depend on how great it is with Allaah.

And any sin that one deems to be a great sin, will be a small sin in Allaah’s Sight.”

{شعب الإيمان ٥/٤٢٨}
Imām Ibn al-Qayyim said: “Innovations pile up, small leading to bigger, until it leads to the person leaving the fold of Islaam.”

{مدارج السالكين صحفة ١٩٦}
Prophet ﷺ said: "If ribaa and zinaa appear in an area, then the people of that area have invited upon themselves the punishment of Allāh."

Imām Ibn Al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: "The remembrance of Allah is Allah's greatest open door between him and his servant as long as the servant doesn't close it with his heedlessness."

Sheikh Al-Albani رحمه الله said:

‎“The truth is that the religion is easy,

but people complicate it.

Some of them with their ignorance,

and some with their harshness.”

The Categories of People in Regards to Knowledge - Sheikh Al-Albani

Thus, the noble ayah divides the people into two categories: The scholars and those who are not scholars.

The obligation of the scholars is to give fatwa (rulings) for those who are not scholars.

The obligation of those who are not scholars is to ask the people of 'ilm (Islamic knowledge) from what is evident from this ayah.

Each of these two categories have their obligation.

The one who is not a scholar "So ask the Ahlul Dhikr" (i.e.,) the scholars.

And the one who is a scholar, it is upon him to convey this knowledge otherwise he would be subject to the curse that has been mentioned in the Qur’an,

And the hadith of the Messenger ﷺ warning of it: "Whoever is asked of (some) knowledge and he hides it, he would be bridled on the Day of Judgement with a bridle from the Hell-Fire"

Ibn Al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: "Disobeying the desires puts a servant in position that if he makes and oath by Allah in supplication (to receive anything) Allah will fulfil it. So he excutes for him many folds more than the desires that he abandoned."

Imām Ibn al-Qayyim Raḥimahullāh said: “And as for congratulating Kuffār on the rituals which are SPECIFIC to them, then it is ḤARĀM (FORBIDDEN) by the AGREEMENT (of Fuqahā), for example congratulating them on their festivals and fasts by saying: ‘A happy festival to you’ or ‘May you enjoy your festival,’ and so on, so if the one who says this has been saved from Kufr, it is STILL FORBIDDEN, and it is like congratulating someone for PROSTRATING to the CROSS, rather that (congratulating Kuffār) is GREATER of a SIN with Allāh.

And it is MORE HATEFUL (to Allāh) than congratulating someone for DRINKING WINE, or MURDERING an INNOCENT SOUL, or COMMITTING ADULTERY, and the likes of it, and many of those who have NO RESPECT for their religion fall into that (error); without REALISING the OFFENSIVENESS of their action, so whoever congratulates a person for his DISOBEDIENCE or BID’AH or KUFR thus exposes himself to the WRATH and ANGER of Allāh.”

As for those who say ‘Well we congratulate disbelievers Christmas and New Year out of courtesy and good manners’, then we say: O Miskeen the Messenger of Allāh Ṣallallāhu-‘Alaihi Wa Sallam and his Companions (Raḍi-Allāhu ‘Anhum) were more courteous and well-mannered than you and I yet they never congratulated Kuffār for their ‘Eīds or New Year.

Sh. Ibn 'Uthaymeen Raḥimahullāh said:

“Wishing disbelievers Christmas or other religious festivals of theirs is ḤARĀM (IMPERMISSIBLE) by the AGREEMENT (of scholars).”

“Never will the Jews nor the Christians be PLEASED with you TILL you FOLLOW their RELIGION. Say: 'Verily, the Guidance of Allāh (i.e. Islamic Monotheism) that is the (only) Guidance. And if you (O Muḥammad, Peace be upon him) were to follow their (Jews and Christians) desires after what you have received of Knowledge (i.e. the Qur’ān), then you would have against Allāh neither any Walī (protector or guardian) nor any helper.” — [al-Qur’ān 2:120]
ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd – Allāh be pleased with him – said:

The worst of the worst (major) sins are: to associate partners with Allāh, to lose hope of the aid of Allāh, to despair of the mercy of Allāh, and to feel safe from the plans of Allāh.

[Al-Ṭabarī, Al-Tafsīr (Qurān 4: 31). Graded ṣaḥīḥ by Ibn Kathīr in his tafsīr of the same verse.]
Sa’īd b. Jubayr – Allāh have mercy on him – reports that a man once asked Ibn ‘Abbās – Allāh be pleased with them:

“How many kabā`ir (major, deadly sins) are there? Seven?” He replied, “They are closer to seven hundred than seven; except a major sin does not remain so if one (truly) seeks forgiveness [from Allāh], and a lesser sin does not remain so if one insists on continuously doing it (i.e. it becomes a major sin).”

[Al-Tabarī, Al-Tafsīr article 9207, et al.]
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Verily, Islam began as a something strange and it will return to being strange, so blessed are the strangers.” It was said, “Who are the strangers?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Those who removed themselves from their tribes.”
