Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

Uthman رضي الله عنه once began to stutter during a khutbah and then said,

Say to one who hopes for eternity in this life: "You, may God grant you wellbeing, do not hear!
For death has stood atop a pulpit of advice And warned you of its occurrence.
Yet you paid no heed—it will not bypass you Except briefly, suddenly felling you."
فلقد قامتِ المنايا على مِنـْـبَرِ وعظٍ ، وأنذرتكَ وقوعا
فتغافلتَ ، ما إخالُكَ إلا عن قليلٍ مباغَتًا وصريعا

The wandering glance transports the image to the heart and distracts the mind with it. Thus, fitnah starts with a curious glance.”

Al-Hasan Al-Basrī رحمه الله was asked:
“Is it Sunnah to love Abū Bakr and ‘Umar?”

al-Fudayl Ibn Iyādh رحمه الله said:

Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said,
“The patience of Yusuf against compliance to the wife of Al Azeez in her matter was more complete than his patience over his being thrown into the well by his brothers and his being sold off as well as their separating him from his father.
For these affairs passed him whilst he had no choice in them, he was not secure from them; the servant is in no position in them except to have patience.
As for his patience from committing sin; then that was practicing a patience of choice and waging a war upon the soul.”
