Tokyo’s demolished Senju Thermal Power Station became famous for its β€œghost” smokestacks, appearing in Japanese cinema classics like Ozu’s Tokyo Story.

Built in 1926 on the Sumida River, the station’s four chimneys rose 83.5 meters, then Tokyo’s tallest structure. The nickname Obake Entotsu, β€œghost chimneys,” came from two things: the station ran as backup, so smoke rarely appeared, and the diamond-shaped layout made the chimneys’ apparent count shift between one and four depending on the angle, an effect train passengers noticed as the formation seemed to rearrange itself in motion.

The station operated until 1963. Its demolition sparked protest, and it still has fans running a dedicated website. A fragment of one chimney now stands as the β€œGhost Chimney Monument” at Teikyo University of Science.

His buildings are instantly recognizable: New York’s Via 57 West looks like an iceberg, Amsterdam’s Sluishuis has a courtyard where residents dock boats, and Billund’s Lego House, built with the famous toy brick maker, stacks brightly roofed cubes.

His clearest statement is Amager Bakke, a COβ‚‚-capturing waste-to-energy plant in Copenhagen that processes 400,000 tons of waste yearly, powers 62,500 homes, and tops it off with a rooftop ski slope, park, and climbing wall.

A bulldozer usually means one thing: raw power, a massive blade, and a lot of displaced earth. The machines working on NPS Group’s sites tell a different story.

A roof-mounted receiver tracks GLONASS and GPS signals simultaneously, feeding a full 3D road model to the onboard computer. Instead of reading the terrain by eye, the operator works from a live virtual map showing exactly where material is high, where it’s low, and what gradient the design calls for. The blade adjusts automatically, no surveyor, no guesswork.

Accuracy sits within three centimeters on the first pass, producing a perfectly even base for asphalt. Work speed increases by 30-40%, and the operator finishes the shift less exhausted.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

How did ancient engineers build roads still in use today? And why do all roads lead to Rome?

At the height of the Roman Empire, an extensive road network was built to move troops quickly between key settlements. Built to exceptional standards, these arteries served for centuries, shaping military conquest, trade, and the postal system.

Military engineers designed roads as straight as possible, since every bend slowed marching troops. Construction began with two parallel trenches marking the route, followed by a multilayered base between 80 and 130 cm deep. The surface was slightly convex to drain rainwater, with stone curbs reinforcing the edges. Where terrain demanded it, embankments, viaducts, and bridges carried the road forward.

Every major road led to Rome, the administrative, economic, and cultural heart of the empire. The saying wasn’t poetry. It was geography.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Mount Pilatus in the Alps is wrapped in cloud and legend. One story holds that the restless spirit of Pontius Pilate wandered these slopes; another that dragons made their home here.

In the 15th century, a Swiss man reportedly encountered a stone-winged dragon at the summit, fainted from fright, and awoke to find only rocks seeping with the creature’s blood. Locals believed the stones held healing powers.
The mountain is reached by a rack railway with the steepest gradient in the world at 48%, designed by engineer Eduard Locher. Rather than the standard upward-facing rack teeth of the time, his system grips horizontally, keeping carriages stable even in strong winds. The switches are massive plates that rotate 180 degrees.

The route runs 4.6 km on an 800 mm gauge track, first climbed in 1889 and still operating today, carrying tourists to the summit at the dizzying speed of 10 km/h.

NPS GC and Russian Railways are completing Russia’s first test site for ballastless high-speed track, on the Sablino–Tosno stretch of the October Railway, where passing Sapsan trains will load-test the full assembly from subgrade to slabs and fasteners.

Robotic total stations and built-in jacks position each slab to within a millimeter, guided by NPS’s own real-time software, which checks coordinates against design specs and issues corrections like β€œshift left 3 mm.” Once aligned, slabs are set with self-compacting concrete, forming a single structure rated for 400 km/h and 50+ years of service.
The site also features Russia’s largest turnouts: 118-meter, 1/25 switches enabling 400 km/h through-speed, a first for Russian rail.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Picture a strand of DNA turned into a steel spiral and stretched across the water. That’s Helix Bridge, one of Marina Bay’s most striking landmarks in Singapore.

Opened in 2010 by a team of Australian and Singaporean architects, the 280-meter stainless steel structure ranks among the city’s longest pedestrian bridges. Canopies of frosted glass and perforated steel shade pedestrians along the way, with four viewing platforms offering views of the bay.

At night, LEDs trace the spiral’s lines for a striking effect, and among the lights you can spot the letters C-G and A-T, marking the four DNA base pairs.

If a railway’s sole job description is being adorable and collecting likes, it’s Korea’s Sky Capsule Monorail.

Riding 7-10 meters above the water, tiny retro capsules in candy colors glide along an elegant elevated track above the surf line.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ The 2.3 km route takes half an hour, plenty of time to soak up ocean views and rack up a thousand photos, especially with a 360-degree view practically begging to be captured.

The monorail opened in 2020 as part of a park built on a decommissioned rail line, and its sea-skimming cars have won over bloggers worldwide. That popularity comes at a cost: 80 capsules run the route, each seating up to four, but you’ll need to book at least a week ahead, or a month for a sunset ride.

NPS GC has finished installing rail slabs at the test site for field trials of ballastless high-speed track.

Along the 1+ km section, crews laid 263 concrete elements: 207 NGP 4.0 track slabs and 56 turnout slabs.

The work unfolded in stages:
😊 Foundation slabs went down on the reinforced subgrade, laid by hand under the turnouts and by an automated rig elsewhere, with height deviations held under 5 mm.

😊 Track slabs, each weighing about 7 tons, were set on three-point jacks above the foundation using a 55-ton crawler crane and a 70-ton mobile crane.

😊 The trickiest part: fine-tuning slabs to within 1 mm. A robotic total station tracks position while accounting for temperature and time of day, checking coordinates against the design in real time via NPS’s own software and issuing corrections.

😊 Once locked in place, crews built formwork and poured self-compacting concrete into the gaps, no vibration needed, no shrinkage.

Next, Russian Railways is set to lay thermally hardened rails, calibrate the automation systems, and test how Sapsan trains loading the track affect the subgrade and structure.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Ever since Hollywood’s β€œOdyssey” hit theaters, the internet’s been fighting harder than the Greeks and Trojans ever did. So let’s ask: what if Homer’s hero had pointed his β€œcunning mind” at building a railway from Troy to Ithaca instead of raiding the seas?

Such a project would need the gods’ help, its scale dwarfing all seven wonders combined: about 1,000 km of track through brutal, seismic terrain, plus engineering marvels crossing seas and mountains.

😊 A transcontinental rail crossing over the Dardanelles, where a road bridge already exists today, the 4.6-km β€œ1915 Γ‡anakkale.”

😊 A tunnel system through the Pindus mountains, potentially over 60 km, on the scale of the Gotthard in the Alps.

😊 A submerged floating tube tunnel anchored by heavy cables, the kind Norway is developing now, and the hardest part of all: the mainland-to-Ithaca gap runs about 30 km, over water more than a hundred meters deep.

In Homer’s version, Poseidon’s curse kept Odysseus wandering for 10 years, though actual sailing time added up to barely a couple of months. The rest went to β€œforced technical layovers”: a year at Circe’s resort, seven more held captive by the nymph Calypso.

Swap the trireme for a high-speed train, and the King of Ithaca flies home in 4 hours, 20,000 times faster. Homer’s real Odyssey opens with an invocation about a man driven off course for years after the fall of Troy. This version might open with an ode to the engineers instead.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Maputo station, capital of Mozambique’s rail network, ranks among the ten most beautiful in the world. Built between 1908 and 1916 and officially inaugurated in 1910, the Beaux-Arts building replaced a modest wood-and-zinc depot from 1895. Legend credits Gustave Eiffel with the design, though it was actually the work of Portuguese architects Alfredo Augusto Lisboa de Lima, MΓ‘rio Veiga, and JosΓ© Ferreira da Costa.

Wrought-iron balconies, marble columns, and a soaring sea-green copper dome spanning 51 meters give it the air of a royal palace rather than a train station. It’s even made a cameo on the big screen, appearing in the 2006 film β€œBlood Diamond.” A small on-site museum displays vintage steam locomotives and railway artifacts, and trains still depart daily for destinations across Mozambique and into neighboring Eswatini, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
