🌊 Transforming Flood into Fortune: Krishna Waters Set to Quench Marathwada’s Thirst!
Just like Samruddhi, this project is hailed as the one of the pet project of CM Devendra Fadnavis.
🚇 100 km Mega Tunnel Project
📄⏳ Feasibility Report to be submitted within 3 months
This visionary initiative aims to solve two of Maharashtra’s most pressing challenges:
👉 Recurring floods in the western districts
👉 Chronic drought in Marathwada
---
💡 The Concept: From Wasted Waters to Lifesaving Resource
Every monsoon, 40 TMC of floodwater from the Krishna River flows wastefully into the sea. This project proposes to divert that floodwater through a 100-kilometre-long gravity-powered tunnel to the Ujani Dam.
🌧️ ➡️ 🌀 ➡️ 🚰
Once stored in Ujani, this water will be distributed to the drought-stricken districts of Beed, Dharashiv, Solapur, and Pune, transforming barren landscapes into fertile farmland.
---
🌍 Dual Purpose – Long-Term Impact
This mega project delivers twin benefits:
1. ✅ Flood Mitigation in Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara — areas that face devastating floods nearly every year.
2. ✅ Revival of Agriculture & Livelihoods in Marathwada through enhanced irrigation capacity.
📌 The concept was envisioned by CM Fadnavis after the catastrophic 2019 floods in Kolhapur and Sangli.
---
💰 Funding & Execution Strategy
Implemented under the ‘Krishna Flood Control Project’, with active support from the Mitra Foundation, the initiative is being rolled out in phases:
✅ Phase 1 – ₹963 crore sanctioned
🔸 River Deepening 🏞️
🔸 Desilting 🏗️
🔸 Upgrading Water Channels in Kolhapur & Sangli
✅ Phase 2 – Water Transfer & Distribution
Focus will shift toward transporting floodwaters to parched Marathwada regions, ensuring year-round irrigation.
---
🛠️ Strategic Planning & Global Expertise
A high-level meeting was convened on June 2 at the Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation (MKVDC) office in Pune to finalize implementation strategies.
🌐 World Bank technical advisors are preparing the Project Feasibility Report, expected within the next 3 months — a key milestone before execution begins.
