Is BYJU'S just making Indian parents fool?

The Average Indian Parent is from the Middle or Lower Middle Class.

The Average Indian Parent works hard to put food on the table and earns a salary that helps him meet his expenses but which cannot help him save a huge sum.

The Average Indian Parent has little desires but one single desire is My Son should be better than me

Sadly in India this word “Better” has long been associated with An Engineering Degree or a Medical Degree, A Good Paying Job even if it has nothing to do with your Degree and a better lifestyle which translates to the fact that

“I took a 30 Lakh Loan to buy my flat, My son will get a 2 Crore Loan for his flat”

“I am driving a Maruti Zen with a 3 Lakh Loan, My son will ride a BMW with a 60 Lakh Loan”

The Average Indian Parent is terrified of the future of his child. The Average Indian Parent knows that in India - everything for a good lifestyle - Good Credit, A Good girl from a good family and Reputation among neighbors and peers and friends - depend on a Child doing “well”.

The Average Indian Parents ambitions are also boundless.

In the year 1999 - I remember telling my son - “I want you to get an IIT rank”

My son, furious and angry after a long day retorted back “And Suppose i told you , i want you to become a Supreme Court Judge!!!!”

I was flummoxed and realized HE WAS RIGHT.

Yet that is the Ghar Ghar ki Kahaani. Every Parent believes that working hard without seeing TV , without reading a story book will result in a Kid becoming an IIT Topper or Einstein.

Focus, Concentration are the words that they use.

When your kid gets 60% marks despite working his hardest - it simply means Your Kids limit has been reached. Nothing can make him get 95% marks.

But can a parent accept that??? That your kid is average and he is not meant for Engineering? No of course not. They will become ostriches. Of course he is not average. Of course if he gives up playing cricket and reads and studies more - he will surely get the right marks!!!

Those are their excuses. They dont want to face the truth and plan for a Future for the Son or Daughter that they have but instead want to plan a future for the Son or Daughter that they WANT.

ENTER BYJUS and VEDANTU AND UNACADEMY and all the others

These Parents are the Victims for these Startups.

A Father who is worried about his son - will get the answer he wants to hear. Your Kid has the aptitude. Your Kid can do wonders. Your Kid can do marvels.

The Father is told that the problem lies with the Education System. The Father is happy and relieved. He wants this to be true.

So the father decides to pay huge sums of money to enroll his child in Byjus - to assuage his conscience that his child will do well and his child is simply lazy and not focussed and that the school work and courses are not helpful.

In reality The Parents cannot face the Truth. The Truth is simply this - Your Child is Average. With Hard work he can crack an 85% in a real examination. His chances of getting into IIT or getting a High Engineering Exam Rank is very slim.

And Byjus, Vedantus and Unacademy take advantage of this fact.

But at the end of the day - many Parents finally see and realize that nothing has helped or worked. Their children have not improved in any way despite working for 12 hours a day. Kids have gone to hospitals out of pressure and lack of sleep, Kids have jumped from buildings under pressure even run away from home because of the belief of the parents that The Kid is Lazy because Byjus told him and he chose to believe it.

So before i blame Byjus or Vedantu or Unacademy - I would blame the Parents.

While Ambition is not wrong - Hiding from the Truth is. If a Kid cannot crack more than 75–80 in a science paper after very hard work - it means the Kid doesn’t have the extra mile it takes. The parent should understand this and leave ambitions like IIT or NEET

Yet the Average Parent does not.

So my only question is what my son told me - If a Kid cannot ask his father why his father does not earn 20 LPA or why his
father is not a Supreme Court Judge or why his father does not become CEO of the company - Why should the Father want the Kids to get into IIT or NEET or become an Engineer despite not having the aptitude?

If Parents were different. If they were like American Parents. Byjus would not be able to do anything.

If Parents felt that as long as their kid worked hard and took subjects that he liked and enjoyed and felt confident that their kid would make something of himself in the future - Trust me - The Kid is better off and these “Educators” would have to scuttle back to where they came from.
Happy learning 😊
