On Thursday evening, over 70 people gathered in Tuam to voice their opposition to the Direct Provision centre planned to open on the grounds of the Mercy Secondary School, situated just outside the town centre.

Locals of all ages attended to find out more information and discuss issues around the opening of the centre. Reporters from the Tuam Herald were in attendance. Independent candidate for East Galway, David Oโ€™Reilly, addressed the crowd.

Points made by speakers included the unsuitability of the proposed site as well as opposition to broader government policy on migration and the forecast by senior civil servants that Ireland is set to be accommodating 180,000 people seeking refuge by the end of the year.

A decision was made to form a committee with an aim to liaise with TDs, Councillors and other relevant groups on behalf of the local community, organise future protests and meetings, and distribute information on further developments in Tuam.

Unconfirmed at present but it is highly likely that sometime this week 500 illegals migrants will be going into the Old Johnson and Johnson building in Ballybrit business park Galway City next to Boston Scientific and Medtronic - where 100s of shift workers are arriving and leaving at all hours of the night .. join us in going to the Galway City Council meeting in the Connaght hotel Old Dublin Rd 3pm Monday 22nd May 2023 to demand answers from the Councillors.
Councillor A Chara .. my name is David O'Reilly i ran as an independent candidate for Galway for the Daรญl.

I rang the city council today about concerning but unconfirmed reports that a large Direct Provision Centre is being prepared for Ballybrit. So far we have had no answer on the phone from Brian Barret director of services housing for Galway City Council.
A number of people intend to be present at the City Council Meeting demanding answers to the questions i put to Brian Barret by email as follows

Could you confirm that the Old Johnson and Johnson building in the Ballybrit business Park has been bought by a Mr O'Brian who owns a number of Direct Provision centres across the country?

Could you confirm that the same building is being renovated to host migrants?

Is the number of migrants arriving initially going to be 500?

Are there plans to increase that number in the future? If so to what total?

How many thousands of places do the few vacant buildings in the complex have the capacity to hold?

Will the migrants be Ukranians or from various countries?

What proportion of them will be single men?

Given that a large number of shift workers in Ballybrit Business park come and go to their work at all hours of the night what measures are in place to ensure their safety and also the safety of the people of Ballybane and the wider Galway community?

Is mise David O'Reilly
