Bitcoin testing downtrend resistance
Bitcoin rose 0.6% on Tuesday, ending the day around $38,700. Ethereum added 3.7%, while other leading altcoins in the top 10 are growing: from 0.5% (Binance Coin) to 12.8% (Solana). The total capitalisation of the crypto market, according to CoinGecko, rose 1.5% to $1.86 trillion overnight.
Over the last eight days, BTC gained almost 20%, recouping more than half of the failure of the second half of January, and buyers decided not to take risks.
Ahead is solid psychological resistance at the circular $40,000 level, which supported the first half of January.
Technically, Bitcoin has stalled its gains as it approaches the upper boundary of the descending channel. Traders are waiting for new signals about whether the recovery in risk demand will continue or whether the latest rebound will soon be choked off. The result of this struggle will determine whether we will see a break from the downtrend or whether the downtrend will continue again.

US manufacturing ISM slowed amid more hawkish Fed
The US manufacturing ISM, an essential indicator for America's business cycle, recorded a significant slowdown in January but managed to beat expectations. It had declined from 58.7 to 57.6 against expectations of 57.4.
The manufacturing ISM has slipped in the last two months from near 60, where it has held for most of last year, which coincides with the start of the Fed's QE rollback. It will be interesting to see if the rate hike that the markets and businesses expect as early as March leads to a short-term downturn in business activity.
Perhaps the Fed is deliberately seeking to cool the economy to slow inflation. But the interim results are highly questionable. The price component jumped from 68.2 to 76.1 last month. Falling manufacturing activity (from 59.4 to 57.8) and new orders (from 61.0 to 57.9) drove the index down.
The ISM release might be the first wake-up call that the process of suppressing inflation will suppress the economy first.

CPI above expectations pushing EUR higher
In Europe, inflation accelerates, contrary to forecasts that the peak has passed. First estimates just released noted an acceleration in CPI from 5.0% to 5.1% y/y against average estimates of a slowdown to 4.4%.
An inflation rate creeping above 5% might wake the ECB from its slumber and put a suppression of inflation on its agenda, following such peers as the Fed and the Bank of England.
We must say that the ECB has enormous potential for advancement on this issue. Right now, the markets are laying down a slight chance of one rate hike before the end of the year, while the regulator's representatives so far remain in the position that there will be no hikes this year.
On the hawkish stance of the Fed, EURUSD fell to 1.1122 at the end of January. However, the pair moved above 1.1300 on German and Eurozone inflation data.
With the higher inflation, we might hear more about that tomorrow after the next meeting, and then the euro recovery could be on firmer footing.

According to the latest ADP data, employment in the USA fell by 301K in January. This is sharply weaker than the expected gain of 185K after a rise of 776K in December.
The shocking dip is caused by both the sharply deteriorating coronavirus situation and evidence of how hard it is for small businesses to gain momentum. Almost half of all job losses came from small companies. From another perspective, the leisure and hospitality sector lost more than 150K jobs.
This is alarming data before Friday's official statistics, where early forecasts had suggested a 165K increase in employment. If the official report is weak, we should expect the Fed to soften its stance and revise the market's expectations for the rate.
The markets are almost 100% betting on a 125-point Fed rate hike in 2022. A softening of these expectations could trigger a correction pullback in the dollar.

Texas snowstorm stops Bitcoin's rebound
The state's association of miners, the Texas Blockchain Council, decided to de-energise mining farms on Wednesday.
Texas is home to the main bitcoin network computing capacity in the US. The states themselves are the world's number one miner of the significant digital asset (around 49% of hash rate).
Bitcoin again proved that it remains in a downward channel, as the recovery bounce lost strength at the upper end of the range. In theory, a bearish reversal of bitcoin opens up the possibility of updating the January lows with potential targets near 30K.

CB and Bank of England meetings will highlight policy contrast
The Bank of England and the ECB will announce their monetary policy decisions today. They could reinforce the contrast in policy between these central banks and trigger a significant reassessment in the FX market.
The ECB is expected to confirm its plans to halt its emergency balance sheet buying programme in March. But it will keep the refinancing rate at zero and continue with 'regular' balance sheet purchases.
The ECB is likely to try to save face after yesterday's new inflation record and show more hawkish rhetoric than we are used to. Even so, the eurozone will fall seriously behind the US and UK in its fight against inflation, which can dent the euro.

Meta's collapse - change of leaders or the next domino?
Meta (FB) shares lost around 20% post-market, which appears to be an overreaction and shows how wary buyers have become of the former growth leaders, the so-called FAANG stocks.
The sharp declines of former crowd favourites could result from a reassessment of the medium-term outlook, for example, due to changes in monetary policy. But they could also be the next domino effect in an impending bear market.
Netflix shares lost more than 30% in a few days following a disappointing report late last month and fell 50% from their peak in late November before fumbling for support from bargain hunters.
PayPal was not technically in the FAANG big league but was punished just as much, losing around 25% intraday yesterday. After Facebook, Snap (-15%) and Twitter (-7%) also took a tangential hit.

In our view, these are not isolated corporate stories but manifestations of broader underline currents. And in the coming days, we will have to determine whether we see a change in the bull market leaders or the first signals of a prolonged bearish trend.
In a bear market, the weakest stars are the first to fall, and then the vortex of decline attracts more and more strong participants.
The first domino is meme stocks, which had fallen methodically since June when the first signals emerged that the Fed was starting to prepare the markets for a wind-down.
Then we saw a peak in many high-tech stocks in November when the Fed started cutting back on buying.
By this logic, the downward spiral could pull more strong stocks into a downward spiral by the time interest rates rise, which is expected in March.

Looking more broadly at the Nasdaq100 index, there is a rather worrying tech analysis picture. It is once again below its 200-day moving average. The high-tech-filled Meta retreated 2.4% after the report. The S&P500 and DJIA, however, look noticeably stronger on the technical analysis side.
But it is worth watching closely how the trading will go this week and whether the buyers will reverse the negative trend of the former Nasdaq favourites.
If so, we see a change in the leaders in the form of a rotation in value stocks and other names affected by the pandemic.
But fears that the Fed is preparing to take money out of the financial system could force market players to take money off the table by selling blue chips.

Altcoins are climbing out of the pit
Down the chain, US stock market dynamics now determine corporate investor sentiment towards Bitcoin and Ether. From the top-down, this sentiment then spreads down to altcoins.
But since late last year, there has been a continuing trend that even bitcoin's calming is enough for altcoins to return to growth and outperform the first cryptocurrency.
In the last 24 hours, the entire crypto market has added 3.3%, while Ether has gained 4.7% versus Bitcoin's 2.4%. Ether has strengthened by 15% in the last seven days, returning to this month's highs and trying to climb above the bottom levels at the end of September 2021.

The Bank of Russia throws a lifeline to the ruble
The Central Bank played on the side of the ruble yesterday, and this helped bring buyers back to the side of the Russian currency. The plan for February assumes a new record of daily currency purchases, which is explained by expensive oil. However, the central bank said it wants to take a break for now. This allows the Russian currency to win back the positive dynamics of oil.
As a result, the ruble returned to 76, the area of local lows since January 14th. Yesterday's growth momentum looks like a brief stop while buyers recharge. In our opinion, it would be more correct for the CBR to pause before returning to the market. This is the case when it is better to play it safe once again.

US data could unpleasantly surprise with weakness
US jobs data will be released today, which promises to attract increased market attention and could cause a surge of volatility in the dollar and equities. In the January employment estimates, investors and traders will be looking for answers as to how active policy tightening from the US Federal Reserve will be, whether wage inflation is so entrenched and whether there are signs that the economy is already losing its momentum.
Let's see what preliminary data we have at our disposal to prepare for the most unpredictable US indicator.
According to the ADP, private-sector employment crumbled 301k in January. The last time we saw a decline was in December 2020, but with a more modest 75k. In both cases, the cause seems to be a spike in coronavirus, which has discouraged job seekers.
