The Pound ends year with anxiety; the Euro chose to wait and see

The British pound on Tuesday experienced the sharpest decline in 13 months. The GBPUSD declined by 1.6% due to concerns over the hard line of Boris Johnson on trade negotiations with the EU.

The markets may have run ahead of the train again, expecting the volatility of the pound to be over. In this case, there are more and more similarities with Trump, whose arrival marked the increased uncertainty for the markets.

The most popular currency pair – EURUSD – is experiencing its mini-moment of truth. The Euro could not overcome the level of 1.1200, stalling near the resistance levels of the last two months, and staying at the important waterline in the form of the 200-day moving average.

More data confirms positive market sentiment

American stock indices and the dollar mostly ignored the results of impeachment voting.

If that is not enough, positive macroeconomic data are already coming from the Asia-Pacific region. The published data on employment in Australia in the morning sharply exceeded expectations, which caused an AUDUSD to rally on decreased fears of further rates cut.

New Zealand also saw a sharp increase in GDP by 0.7% QoQ.

Australia and New Zealand data adds to positive mood on top of a couple of surveys saw increase in market and economy optimism.

Bit-comment: Bitcoin bounced after the drop

Bitcoin made a sharp rebound on Wednesday evening after touching levels near $6,500. An additional inspiring signal was a significant increase in trading volumes along with the price. During the night, Bitcoin bounced back more than 8% and changed hands for $7,200 this morning.

Detailed economic calendar
Stocks and commodities are rising, but currencies are on alert

The world markets remain positive, recording new attempts to climb higher, as US S&P 500 updated historical highs for sixth session in a row. Along with the growth of stock indices, the growth of oil prices also attracts attention.

In contrast to the constant demand for the stocks and commodities, the foreign exchange market behaves noticeably more cautiously as major currency pairs bounce back from recent extremes.

Moreover, market participants call today “Quadruple Witching day” that may lead to higher than normal volatility on markets.

Unpleasant signals of the currency market, despite the stocks rally

Current market sentiment contrasts sharply with that of precisely one year ago. However, the coming January is not necessarily going to be as positive as was the previous one.

The foreign exchange market also makes markets look into the future with some nervousness.

Bit-comment: Christmas gift for ‘hodlers’

Bitcoin decided to delight his holders with the growth on Christmas Eve. On the evening of December 22, the first cryptocurrency switched to growth mode, which continues at the beginning of the new week. During the last 24 hours, BTC has been growing by more than 5% and is trading around $7,600.

Debt as potential 2020 world problem

As we approach the end of the year on an optimistic note, convinced that the world economy has managed to reverse from slowdown to acceleration. Stock markets fully reflect these expectations, ending 2019 with the sharpest growth in more than 20 years.

As a result of this general optimism, it is worth double-checking the potential risks surrounding markets on the eve of the new year.

Sad but true: cryptocurrency won’t fly to the Moon

Bitcoin partially offset yesterday’s growth by 3% to $7,400. It needs to exceed $8K and stay afloat for some time for the benchmark coin to prove it ends the downtrend. However, this may not be an easy task.

As for next year, it looks very likely that Bitcoin, after a series of “tug-of-war” occasions, will still make another leap upwards, but its scale may be much more limited even in comparison with the summer rally.

The start of 2020 may be a repeat of January 2018

Financial markets end the year on a high note, supported on the one hand by improved macroeconomic indicators, and, on the other, by hopes for an early signing of the first phase of a trade agreement.

However, January often comes with a reassessment of the previous market movement. It was an upward reversal in January 2019, but it looks more like the exception than the rule. More commonly in recent years, following the strong October-December chord, at some point in January, the markets came under pressure. In this regard, it may well turn out that the beginning of 2020 may be a repeat of 2018.

Death cross over Bitcoin

Bitcoin’s sideways price trend has been going on for over a month. With highs around $7800 and lows bear $6600, most of the time the Bitcoin price was close to $7200. Technical analysts believe that now there are prerequisites for growth in the market, citing the growth of long positions at Bitfinex.

However, fans of graphic analysis mostly see bearish signs, citing the “death cross”. The latter concerns short-term prospects, which are supplemented by another observation: without the growth impulse, the pressure increases.
