Bitcoin: the golden cross signals an uptrend, but not right away

The crypto market capitalisation has risen by a modest 0.4% over the past 24 hours to $2.7T, while it has generally remained within a narrow range for over two weeks now. Cryptocurrencies have ceased to receive signals from the equity market, where volatility has fallen sharply in recent days, and from regulators, whose regulatory news flow remains on hold. Nevertheless, from a broader perspective, we continue to view this as a bullish pause, anticipating further upward momentum following this lull. Notable movements over the past day include gains for Cosmos (+18%), Polkadot (+11%) and Zcash (+10.5%), while Internet Computer (-6.2%), Uniswap (-3.2%) and Litecoin (-1.4%) have fallen.

Bitcoin remains below the $80K mark, but managed to rebound after a mid-day dip on Tuesday to $77.6K. The simple moving averages formed a β€˜golden cross’ on Tuesday – a significant bullish signal in classical technical analysis. In shares and other traditional financial assets, such a signal is typically followed by accelerated growth. For the leading cryptocurrency, the formal crossover of the 50-day moving average above the 200-day moving average in October 2024 and May 2025 failed to deliver a meaningful signal. However, the current situation bears a closer resemblance to what we saw in 2019, when the golden cross appeared following a prolonged bull market, rather than as a correction within an uptrend. Six years ago, this signal was followed by a 90% rally in less than two months. The return of the 50-day moving average above the 200-day moving average in 2020 required more patience, which was ultimately rewarded with a more than sixfold increase over the following 10 months. By contrast, the 2023 golden cross delivered an 110% increase over five months and more than a twofold increase over the next two years.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ US Pre-Market: Mostly Negative πŸ“‰

The US stock market is trading in negative territory in pre-market trading.

In the Information Technology sector, Apple (AAPL) is down 0.32%, while NVIDIA (NVDA) is down 0.51%.

In the Communication Services sector, Alphabet (GOOGL) is down 2.05%, while Meta Platforms (META) is up 4.80%.

In the Financials sector, Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) is down 0.29%, while JPMorgan Chase (JPM) is down 0.63%.

The combination of selloffs in key technology and financial stocks points to risk aversion within the US market: investors are reallocating capital toward more conservative instruments, which could provide short-term dollar support through increased demand for Treasuries and other safe-haven dollar assets.

Bitcoin edges lower for a 4th day, capped by the 50-week MA

The crypto market continues to trade within a narrow range while awaiting fresh signals on the trend's direction. However, at $2.66T, the market capitalisation remains above its 50- and 200-day moving averages, which stand at $2.39T and $2.38T respectively, signalling a bullish β€˜golden cross’, reinforced by the fact that the price is trading above this crossover. That said, historically, this does not necessarily mean an immediate rally. On the contrary, profit-taking has been evident in the market for the second consecutive day. We attribute this to the market’s cautious reaction ahead of the inflation figures and the Fed’s decision in the coming days, as well as rather worrying signals from the debt markets of developed countries, led by the US.

Bitcoin has returned to the vicinity of its recent lows, trading just below $78K after recording three consecutive red daily candles and opening Thursday lower. The week is underway, but we may be seeing resistance at the 50-week moving average, which has halted the rally. It acted as support from August 2024 to October 2025, and a breach below it was followed by a 21% decline over two weeks and a 43% drop over 12 weeks. Nevertheless, the base case scenario appears to be that the price will fluctuate near this level for some time yet before resuming its upward trend, as was the case in April–May 2019 and May–July 2020.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ US Pre-Market: Mostly Negative πŸ“‰

Negative trends are prevailing in the US stock market pre-market.

In the Financials sector, Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) is up 0.45%, while Bank of America (BAC) is up 0.30%.

In the Information Technology sector, NVIDIA (NVDA) is down 1.26%, while Broadcom (AVGO) is down 1.65%.

In the Consumer Discretionary sector, Tesla (TSLA) is down 1.98%, while Amazon (AMZN) is down 0.61%.

Under these conditions, the foreign exchange market is signalling increased demand for safe-haven dollar assets.

In the short term, this is supporting the US Dollar Index through reallocation of capital from risk equities into money markets, while the potential for dollar weakness remains limited until there are signs of a reversal in risk appetite or a softening of Fed policy expectations.
