The crypto market is moving in the opposite direction to equities

The crypto market’s market capitalisation has fallen by 1% over the past 24 hours, returning to levels last seen in mid-July. The positive momentum the market showed in the first half of last week failed to take hold. Once again, we are seeing a negative correlation with the Nasdaq 100 index, this time in the form of falling cryptocurrencies while shares rise. Could this be becoming the new norm?

Bitcoin is dragging the entire market down to last week’s lows after falling below $63K. A brief and tentative rebound on Sunday proved to be a failed attempt to return above the 50-day moving average. Such a plunge clearly highlights the difficulties faced by the bulls in their attempt to convince the wider market of a reversal in the bear market that began last September.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ US Pre-Market: Mostly Positive πŸ“ˆ

The US stock market is showing a generally positive trend in pre-market trading, with the largest technology and consumer companies leading the gains.

In the Financials sector, Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) is up 0.60%, while JPMorgan Chase (JPM) is up 0.98%.

In the Information Technology sector, Apple (AAPL) is up 0.61%, while NVIDIA (NVDA) is down 1.04%.

In the Energy sector, Exxon Mobil (XOM) is down 1.25%, while Chevron (CVX) is down 1.18%.

With the largest companies by market cap predominantly rising, the market is trading in moderate risk-on mode: interest in risk assets remains, while demand for the dollar as a safe-haven asset is subdued. In the foreign exchange market, this is creating a neutral-to-soft picture for the dollar, with no clear momentum toward sustained appreciation.

Gold: the calm before the storm

β€’ Citi believes that gold’s consolidation will end with a rise towards $4,500 per ounce.

β€’ The precious metal managed to find a bottom thanks to strong Chinese demand and the uncertainty surrounding the Fed.

▢️ Pro News Flash: The Yen Fights Back

πŸ’΄ The Japanese Yen has rallied sharply after the first coordinated US and Japan currency intervention in 26 years, as authorities stepped in to halt its record weakness.

πŸ“Š The move triggered a wave of short covering, with hedge funds forced to unwind some of their largest bearish positions on the yen in years.

🏦 While the intervention has strengthened the currency, conflicting policies from the Japanese government and the Bank of Japan could make it difficult for the rally to last.

⚠️ Investors will now be watching whether Japan intervenes again and whether domestic investors begin bringing overseas capital back home, providing further support for the yen.
