Russia will invite many heads of state and heads of regional organizations of the Global South to the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting and the BRICS Summit.

"One of the most important tasks is to establish a dialogue with those nations that show an interest in getting closer to #BRICS, a wide-range interest, from full membership to the establishment of working partnership relations," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

"There are about 30 such states, and the question of how we can strengthen the dialogue with them will be among the top political priorities of Russia's BRICS Chairmanship this year," the Russian Minister added.

The 2024 BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting will take place in Russia's city of Nizhny Novgorod in June. In October, the city of Kazan will host the BRICS Summit.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the US Ambassador Ervin Massinga’s speech on policy and human rights contained "allegations" and "unsolicited advice," and that it would work with the embassy to correct the "errors and inconsistencies" in his statement.

"The statement is ill advised and contains uniformed assertions. It is contrary to the historic and friendly relations between Ethiopia and the United States," the ministry said.

Massinga had said in his speech that detaining critics would not resolve Ethiopia’s outstanding issues and that "the political dialogue the Ethiopians need could be helped by releasing key political figures."

"С удовлетворением отмечаю, что БРИКС вызывает все больший интерес в целом у стран Азии, Африки и Латинской Америки. Экономика России заняла десятое место среди крупных экономик мира по темпам роста в долларовом выражении с начала XXI века, следует из анализа РИА Новости данных Международного валютного фонда и Всемирного банка.
Информация приводится по экономикам с размером ВВП от 100 миллиардов долларов: на конец прошлого века таких было 35, а по итогам 2023 года — 68.

ВВП России за 23 года вырос в 7,7 раза – до чуть больше двух триллионов долларов с 260 миллиардов в конце прошлого века.

Быстрее всех экономика росла у присоединившейся к БРИКС Эфиопии — с начала века она увеличилась в 19,4 раза, до 160 миллиардов долларов. Далее следует Китай, чей ВВП вырос в 14,6 раза, до 17,7 триллиона долларов. Третью строчку занимает Казахстан, где экономика выросла в 14,2 раза — до 261 миллиарда долларов с 18,3 миллиарда.
Четвертым по темпам роста стал Вьетнам (рост в 13,9 раза, до 434 миллиардов), пятерку замыкает Катар (в 13,2 раза, до 234 миллиардов долларов). Кроме того, в десятку входят Румыния, показатели которой выросли в 9,3 раза — до 346 миллиардов долларов, Кения (в 8,6 раза, 109 миллиардов), Бангладеш (в 8,4 раза, 446 миллиардов) и Индонезия (8,3 раза, 1,4 триллиона долларов).

Помимо Эфиопии, Китая и России в БРИКС быстрее всего увеличивался ВВП Индия — ее экономика с начала века выросла в 7,6 раза. Показатели ОАЭ за эти годы увеличились в 4,8 раза, Египта — в четыре раза, Ирана – в 3,7 раза, Бразилии — в 3,3 раза, ЮАР – в 2,5 раза.

Единственной страной, которая показала уменьшение ВВП в долларовом выражении с начала века, стала Япония, входящая в "Большую семерку". Ее экономика сократилась на 15% — до 4,2 триллиона долларов против пяти триллионов по итогам прошлого столетия.
Самый медленный рост ВВП за прошедшие годы у Греции, где он составил лишь 83%. Менее чем вдвое выросли также Пуэрто-Рико (+88%) и входящая в G7 Италия (+97%). Среди других стран "Большой семерки" быстрее всего росла Канада (в 2,9 раза), затем идут США (рост в 2,7 раза), Германия (2,3 раза), Франция (в 2,2 раза) и Великобритания (в два раза).

Депутат парламента Эфиопии заявил, что участие в БРИКС жизненно важно для страны

Участие в объединении БРИКС (Бразилия, Россия, Индия, Китай, ЮАР) жизненно важно для Эфиопии в целях расширения своих дипломатических отношений с иностранными государствами и развития экономического сотрудничества. Об этом заявил член комитета по международным отношениям и укреплению мира совета народных представителей (нижней палаты парламента) Эфиопии Дина Муфти.

"Вступление в БРИКС критически важно для Эфиопии, которая стремится к расширению своих дипломатических отношений с другими странами и развития экономического сотрудничества, - цитирует его радиостанция FBC. - Это благотворно скажется на торговых связях Эфиопии, ее туристическом секторе, на финансовой поддержке предприятий и привлечении новых технологий".

Ранее МИД Эфиопии расценил свое первое участие во встрече БРИКС в России как самую большую дипломатическую победу.

Группа БРИКС с момента основания в 2006 году прошла через две волны расширения. В 2011 году к первоначальному составу, в который входили Бразилия, Россия, Индия и Китай, присоединилась ЮАР. В августе 2023 года в объединение пригласили сразу шесть новых членов - Аргентину, Египет, Иран, ОАЭ, Саудовскую Аравию и Эфиопию, однако в конце декабря Аргентина отказалась от вступления. С 1 января текущего года в БРИКС состоят десять стран.

Diplomats navigate Ethiopia’s BRICS membership virtues, challenges – Ethiopian Press Agency

ADDIS ABABA – Apart from cementing global partnership, Ethiopia’s BRICS entry clears the way to advance in trade, tourism, technology and other areas, noted diplomats said.

The above remark came while Ambassador Dina Mufti unveiling his research findings in relation to Ethiopia’s BRICS membership, possible virtues and challenges in the presence of diplomats, scholars and other personalities in the area.

The carrier diplomat remarked that having a strategic geopolitical partner and immense natural resources, Ethiopia would reap more benefits from the membership through its unwavering efforts and endeavors.

Amb. Dina added, “In addition to promoting international partnerships, the membership would also bring massive market investment, resource flows, experience sharing, technology access, and strong bilateral ties with member countries that has been working in various fields.”

Remarking the similarity between South-South cooperation and the bloc, he said, sovereignty, joint investment and partnership are among many other normative principles of the global south.

“The country’s benefit from the bloc lays on the basis of principles of equality, sovereignty and non-interference. It also promotes not only resources but also geo-political influence,” he said.

Moreover, the members are coming with new guidelines to address the possible challenges related to sanctions, climate change, macroeconomic shocks, and financial volatility among others, Amb. Dina noted.

Mentioning the already undertaken joint substantive and result-oriented works, the Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia Evgeny Terekhin on his part stated that this cooperation will bring practical benefits to all member countries of the intergovernmental organization.

He further remarked that BRICS cooperation in the field of politics and security is free of ideological bias and double standards but is based on respect for the sovereignty of member states and the principle of non-interference in their domestic affairs.

He has also reiterated BRICS cooperation as economics and finance, science and education, and the humanitarian sphere and in the fields of trade, investment, innovative technologies and social affairs.

Ambassador Evgeny reaffirmed his country’s commitment to work closely with partners to deepen cooperation in the field of digital economy, information and communication technologies and innovations.

The diplomats urged the member countries to step up multifaceted cooperation to overcome possible challenges.

The panel discussion was organized by the department of diplomacy and international relations, college of leadership and governance in cooperation with the Ethiopian Civil Service University.

Ethiopia's Green Legacy Initiative Aims to Plant Over 6.5 Billion Trees in Upcoming Summer - ENA English

Addis Ababa, May 14/2024 (ENA) Ethiopia's Green Legacy Initiative, a national reforestation program, is preparing to plant more than 6.5 billion tree seedlings this upcoming planting season, according to Adefres Worku, the Coordinator of the Initiative's Technical Committee.

Adefres told ENA that the program has already mapped 504,000 hectares of land out of the 1.8 million hectares where soil and water conservation efforts have been undertaken to prepare the sites for planting.

This massive reforestation effort is part of Ethiopia's broader strategy to address deforestation and ensure food security.

Data from 2000 to 2013 indicates that the country was losing an average of 92,000 hectares of forest cover annually.

However, the Green Legacy Initiative aims to reverse this trend by preventing further degradation and increasing the nation's forest cover.

Beyond environmental protection, Adefres highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the program.

The initiative is creating job opportunities in nurseries, as well as in sectors like animal husbandry, beekeeping, poultry farming, and fruit and vegetable production.

The initiative is also expected to bolster Ethiopia's international standing as a leader in climate change mitigation.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's administration is spearheading the Green Legacy Initiative, building on the lessons learned from previous years.

Adefres noted that the program has inspired neighboring countries, and plans are underway to launch the initiative on a weekly and monthly basis with the participation of Ethiopian citizens.

Furthermore, the government has submitted a request to the Guinness Book of World Records to recognize the initiative's ambitious goal of mass tree planting, where millions of Ethiopians are expected to participate.

Adefres emphasized that the Green Legacy Initiative is poised to deliver multifaceted benefits to Ethiopia's economy, society, diplomacy, and overall efforts to combat the impacts of climate change.
