就我看过的为数不多的刘慈欣作品而言，核心来说都是社会的，或者说是一种权力幻想简称「权幻」，科幻是达成权幻的手段。即使不说被当代人选中成为政治谕言的《三体》和《流浪地球》。《超新星纪元》的视角就在提前钦定的一组领导人身上，最后那个 交换国土 的点子就完全和科幻无关。《诗云》描写了一个绝对的权力的化身的神级文明，可以改造星球，然而这个绝对权力的化身又折服在中国传统文化之下，就是一种究极的软实力幻想。《朝闻道》里面的权力是知识，神级文明有着所有真理，而科学家在这种绝对权力面前从科学方法的实践者和边界的开拓者跌落回听课的学生。终产者、地球大炮也是如此。
