Today is Day 5 - Building Community and Strong Relationships!

How can we best implement the knowledge we have gained from the other themes? What practices and rituals are important to developing a healthy sense of self, family and community? The final day of the Activation will focus on how we can create intentional communities, eco-villages, and agoras which take a holistic approach to building the new world.

There was previously an initiative to get Freedom Cells onto Matrix chat servers for a more private communication layer. Internally, we decided to give it more time before using it as an official solution.

In this time, many Freedom Cells in the community did go ahead and run their own Matrix instances, especially in the EU.

The intention and initiative behind this is commended, but after reading two papers on Matrix' privacy concerns, and a bit of their history, I want to bring up the concerns who may be using the project thinking that they are operating privately.

Here are the two papers, written by LibreMonde - a non-profit who is working on a privacy centric fork of the Matrix protocol. The Matrix protocol was originally developed by engineers who worked at Amdocs, an Israeli telecommunications company that was investigated by the NSA and FBI to determine whether state secrets were being stolen.

Here is Matrix's response to these papers, with the original author's counter-response.

I will follow up with a more detailed look at the claims being made, and attempt to verify them.

Here is the TL;DR - taken directly from the paper:
matrix.org and vector.im receive a lot of private, personal and identifiable data on a regular basis, or metadata that can be used to precisely identify and/or track users/server, their social graph, usage pattern and potential location. This is possible both by the default configuration values in synapse/Riot that do not promote privacy, and by specific choices made by their developers to not disclose, inform users or resolve in a timely manner several known behaviours of the software.

Data sent on a potential regular basis based on a common web/desktop+smartphone usage even with a self-hosted client and Homeserver:

The Matrix ID of users, usually including their username.
Email addresses, phone numbers of the user and their contacts.
Associations of Email, phone numbers with Matrix IDs.
Usage patterns of the user.
IP address of the user, which can give more or less precise geographical location information.
The user's devices and system information.
The other servers that users talks to.
Room IDs, potentially identifying the Direct chat ones and the other user/server.

With default settings, they allow unrestricted, non-obfuscated public access to the following potentially personal data/info:

Matrix IDs mapped to Email addresses/phone numbers added to a user's settings.
Every file, image, video, audio that is uploaded to the Homeserver.
Profile name and avatar of users.

The main concerns that I see with matrix:
- Leaking information to third parties on registration
- Uniquely identifying devices through device names
- Contract tracing through the mobile app
- All files uploaded to Matrix are publicly accessible through an API

Friends, We have just heard that Rosa Koire, an amazing researcher and speaker at the first Greater Reset passed away in the last couple days. We are saddened by this news and thankful we were able to work with her. Rest in Power. (The message with the pic is from researcher Charlotte Iserbyt)

On Tuesday May 25, 2021, Christian Westbrook (Ice Age Farmer) spoke at The Greater Reset: Activation to Expansion. Christian shared a new message of the importance of connecting to our heart when making decisions and living our lives.

Christian is a permaculturist, homesteader and father with a background in Artificial Intelligence and a deep love of humanity. He is also the founder of Ice Age Farmer, which looks deeply at the future of our food supply, from the agenda to defile and centralize control of it, to how these challenges must inform our response: a rapid move back to decentralized, regenerative food system. He produces videos, interviews, tools (Growing Degree Days, Crop Loss Map, Wiki and Maps) in order to shed light on the myriad risks to our food system and how they must inspire us to grow our own food.
