Compression is the process of coding that will effectively reduce the total number of bits needed to represent certain information.
There are two types of compressions lossy and lossless
Lossless
โ๏ธ Does not lose information (i.e., the signal is perfectly reconstructed after decompression)
โ๏ธ Produces a variable bit-rate
โ๏ธ It is not guaranteed to actually reduce the data size
โ๏ธ Lower compression ratio
Lossy
โ๏ธ Loses some information (i.e., the signal is not perfectly reconstructed after decompression)
โ๏ธ Produces any desired constant bit-rate
โ๏ธ Higher compression ratio
โ๏ธ Perceptual loss of information reduced (controlled)
