The franc is not just a currency unit but also a part of the history of many countries. First introduced in France in 1360 as a gold coin to pay the ransom for King John II, it has come a long way, becoming the main currency of France in 1795 and remaining so until the euro was introduced in 2002. The franc has been used not only in France but also in many other countries, including Switzerland, where it remains the national currency to this day. Interestingly, in Switzerland, 1 franc equals 100 rappen or centimes, and the banknotes are adorned with portraits of distinguished Swiss individuals. The franc symbolizes stability and independence and continues to play a significant role in the global economy. 🌍💰

During the 17th century, gold francs ceased to be minted, but the name continued to be used by the French public for the new unit of exchange—the livre tournois, a gold coin subdivided into 20 sols. In 1795, after the French Revolution, the republican government introduced a new franc currency. The first coin was a five-franc silver piece, and gold coins worth 20 francs (known as napoleons) were coined later.

The Swiss franc was adopted by France’s client state, the Helvetic Republic, in 1799. The Belgian franc was adopted by Belgium in 1832, and the Luxembourg franc replaced the Dutch guilder in 1848. Interestingly, the franc was also the currency of France, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

In 2002, the franc ceased to be legal tender in France, Belgium, and Luxembourg after the introduction of the euro as the sole currency of these countries. However, many former French colonies in Africa retained the name “franc” for their own basic monetary units, linked to the French franc at fixed exchange rates. 🇫🇷💰

🌐 The Swiss Franc has a fascinating history. Prior to the Helvetic Republic, over 860 different coins circulated in Switzerland 1. In 1798, the Franc currency was introduced and used until 1803 along with a number of foreign currencies.

Under the Federal Coinage Act, all currencies were replaced by the Swiss Franc, which was introduced at par with the French Franc in 1850. Switzerland adopted the gold standard in 1865 as a member of the Latin Monetary Union, legally maintaining it until 2000.🇨🇭💰

🇨🇭 The Journey of the Swiss Franc Banknotes 🏦

The story of the Swiss franc banknotes is a fascinating journey that began in the early 19th century. The first banknotes in Switzerland were issued in 1825 by the Caisse de dépôt of the city of Bern. During the 19th century, the cantons (states) of Switzerland had the right to print their own notes.

However, this changed in 1881 when the Swiss National Bank was granted the exclusive right to issue banknotes in Switzerland. The first series of banknotes issued by the Swiss National Bank came into circulation in 1907. These were known as the interim notes and were printed according to the pattern used by earlier banks of issue.

The Swiss National Bank introduced denominations of 50, 100, 500, and 1000 Swiss francs in 1907. This was followed by the introduction of the 20 franc notes in 1911, and the 5 franc notes in 1913.

The material of the banknotes is a unique blend of cotton and polymer, providing them with a distinctive feel and durability. This not only enhances their longevity but also adds a layer of security as the texture is hard to replicate.

One of the over a dozen security features is the use of microtext. These are tiny letters that can only be seen clearly under a magnifying glass.

🌍In Switzerland, there are four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. To avoid favoring any one of the official languages, the authorities decided to depict the symbol of Switzerland—Helvetia—on coins and postage stamps. The official Latin name of the country is Confoederatio Helvetica. The capital letters of the Latin name are used in the country’s international code (CH) and currency (CHF) for the same reason. Like Helvetia, the Latin name unites the country.

🇪🇺 Why doesn't Switzerland use the euro, even though it's surrounded by Eurozone countries? The answer lies in the country's unique economic and political strategy.

First, the Swiss franc is a symbol of financial stability. Switzerland has long maintained neutrality, including financial independence, and the franc remains a "safe haven" for investors, especially during times of economic crisis.

Second, the franc allows flexibility in monetary policy. The Swiss National Bank can adjust interest rates and the exchange rate without having to align with the European Central Bank's decisions.

Thus, Switzerland chooses stability and independence over integration with the Eurozone💰
