2️⃣5️⃣ FPL Commandments To Ensure You Have A Good Season 🙏

📝 Given we’re in the midst of a dreaded international break 🌍 I thought I’d take the opportunity to update my ‘FPL Commandments’ 👍.

📝 It’s basically a list of principles that I developed over the past 4 seasons and which I wrote myself ✍️ + keep updated ✍️+ refer to throughout each season 📕.

📝 For context (and particularly with commandments no. 20 in mind‼️) these principles have helped me achieve the following overall rank finishes:

2018/19 - 1k (precise rank was 486th which is my FPL personal best)
2019/20 - 35k
2020/21 - 34k
2021/22 - currently 23k

📝 Here’s how you gain that consistency of performance:

1️⃣ Avoid taking a gamble on players (even premium players) who don’t have Premier League and FPL pedigree until you’ve seen how they settle into the league.

2️⃣ When playing a Wildcard (or setting your team up for GW1) think carefully about price points 💷. Go for one of the most expensive players in each position (defence, midfield and attack) so that you can easily move to other players without having to take hits 🥊 to force the transfers.

3️⃣ Even if it feels boring, aim for the ‘template team’ in GW1. Getting off to a bad start in FPL makes it very difficult to catch up. Use an early Wildcard (usually in the period GW3-GW6) if necessary to reach the template early and then use it as a base to kick on from there 🦵. You can add in some differentials as the GWs progress 👍.

4️⃣ Don’t make decisions based on team loyalty and / or dislikes. Look at the player’s performance + their stats 📊 + their upcoming fixtures 🗓...not the badge on their shirt. Just picking your favourite players and avoiding players you don’t like for whatever reason is a sure way to get a bad FPL score 🤷.

5️⃣ Think in chunks of 6 GWs at a time and decide who is the best captain to have in each of those weeks. Plan transfers and team structure accordingly (i.e. to make sure you have an optimal captaincy pick each GW).

6️⃣ Don’t go all out for the best possible starting 11 at the expense of having a really weak bench🪑.

7️⃣ Early in the season (and when we don’t have postponement risks) making some well timed early transfers can mean you build up a good squad value that will help you later in the season when it comes to playing your Wildcard and Free Hit Chips 🍟 (as you’ll be working to a bigger budget). But remember…the best idea is to buy good players early - not ‘early’ in the GW…just ‘early’‼️

…Make sure you have a playing bench 🪑 though to cover any absences if you get caught out by making early moves which involve players who then get injured 🤕. This is a variation on SCAP and needs carefully managing‼️ Forget about team value after c. GW25. Leave transfer decisions until close to the deadline to allow for press conferences and team / injury news. It’s more valuable than the odd £0.1m here and there.

8️⃣ Avoid points hits 🥊 unless you absolutely really need them. ‘If in doubt, do nowt!’ Take between 4-8 hits in a season in normal circumstances (fair enough if you take 10-15 this season due to all of the blanks and doubles though).

9️⃣ Be open minded to the validity of other people’s opinions even if they challenge your own views 🤔.

🔟 If a player emerges as an absolute bargain don’t hold back and find reasons not to buy them 🛍. Equally if a player looks expensive but is still value then buy them‼️Forget the fact you have a £100m budget…put Salah and TAA in your squad ahead of GW1 and then consider whatever money is left as your overall budget. I’ve never heard a top 50k player say ‘But Salah and TAA are too expensive’ 🤔. I’ve heard plenty of lowly ranked managers say that though 😉.

1️⃣1️⃣ Watch as many games as you can, trust your eyes 👀 and use the stats 📊objectively .

1️⃣2️⃣ Only pick players that are 99% of the time getting 80+ minutes .

1️⃣3️⃣ Avoid teams completely where rotation is crazy and limit yourself to 3 players in your squad that play for high rotation teams. If you go there then make sure you have a decent bench‼️
1️⃣4️⃣ Don’t spend more than £9.5m absolute max on your 2 goalkeepers (£9m max ideally) 🥅. Premium goalkeepers aren’t worth the extra money if you carry them for long periods of time (10 years of data tells us this‼️) and they make at least 1 other position in your team sub-optimal. Go with a £4.5m, £5m or £5.5m max main goalkeeper and a £4m back-up who plays but sits on your bench.

1️⃣5️⃣ Stick to picking Premium Players as your Captaincy Picks 95% of the time. These guys are pricey for a reason…not least because they provide the most consistent returns and the biggest hauls more of the time than cheaper ‘differential assets’ and ‘Hail Mary’ type captain picks. Only go for differentials in a GW where there’s not a clear & obvious captain pick. Aim for a GW captaincy average of 18+pts per GW. In the main stick to midfield and striker captaincy picks 👍. Captaincy is one of the main areas that separates the top 50k FPL players from the rest.

1️⃣6️⃣ Save all of your Chips 🍟 for use in the 2nd half of the season around the blank and double GWs. Do this even if it means taking a few more hits 🥊 earlier in the season. You’ll be glad you did when you get to the big blanks and doubles‼️

1️⃣7️⃣ Always play your Triple Captain Chip 🍟 in a double gameweek and on a premium player who tends not to be rotated. It’s totally illogical not to do so. Salah & Kane types are the go to choices. Don’t try and be clever and go for a differential with your TC🍟. It’ll likely fail 90% of the time. You’ll look clever maybe 2 out of 10 times an a numpty the other 8 times‼️

1️⃣8️⃣ Bounce ideas off other people and listen their criticisms and alternative views. Ultimately stick to the decision that you think is right though if you’ve reached it via proper research 📚.

1️⃣9️⃣ Don’t drown yourself in too much data 📊and too many opinions 🗣. Find the right balance for you. Keep to c. 4 core sources that you trust and which suit your game.

2️⃣0️⃣ Know your sources‼️ Take advice from people that have a demonstrable track record of doing well in FPL. You wouldn’t let an unqualified stranger perform open heart surgery on you 💔 so why would you let someone with a 💩 rubbish FPL rank history advise you on your FPL squad

2️⃣1️⃣ Don’t panic if you have some poor GWs. Stick to your plan and process‼️ It’s a 38 GW season‼️ The tortoise 🐢 beats the hare 🐇. Panicking and making daft moves off the back of a tough GW is a rookie thing to do.

2️⃣2️⃣ If you’re in really strong mini leagues don’t let your position in them distract you…you might actually be performing really well despite being mid-table in a very strong mini league 🤷. Keep focussed on averaging 65pts per GW as this will land you in the top 50k come the end of the season.

2️⃣3️⃣ Take some days away from FPL to keep fresh and motivated with it…but set calendar reminders for GW deadlines.

2️⃣4️⃣ Always prioritise transfers to deal with the weakest link / biggest problem in your starting 11👍. Avoid luxury transfers if you’ve got bigger issues to deal with‼️

2️⃣5️⃣ Enjoy FPL…it’s a game after all…ok, it’s more important than that but you know what I mean 🤣‼️

Final thoughts 🤔:

If you’ve never had a top 100k rank before I reckon that if you follow all 25 commandments next season I’d be confident that you’ll make at least the top 100k.

If you pick and choose from my list and then mix them with some other poorly thought out ideas / behaviours then I wouldn’t be confident of predicting even a top 200k finish. This is because my 25 commandments work well in tandem with each other. They are a coherent set of fairly conservative principles that work well as a collective. Throw in some random behaviours like captaining defenders regularly or by having too many low ownership players and the whole thing goes up in smoke 🔥.

Know what kind of manager you are now and what kind of manager you want to be…then write your own plan to get there 👊 (or just copy mine if you feel that way out 🤣).

♠️♥️♦️♣️THE ROLE OF LUCK v SKILL IN FPL …AND SOME COMPARISONS WITH POKER ♣️♦️♥️♠️

Ever played Poker

There are actually a fair few examples between Poker 🃏and FPL. In this article we’ll briefly compare and contrast the 2 games when it comes to ‘Skill v Luck’ and also with regards to how emotion plays a part in both games 😐😤😡.

So here are the main similarities …

Both involve an element of luck 🍀
Both involve strategy 📝
Both involve skill 👌
Both involve mathematical analysis 🧮
Both involve decision making based on probability ✖️=
Both involve risk analysis 🧑🏽‍💻
Both have the ability to deliver highs and lows 🎢
Performance in both can be affected by emotions like rage and anger 🤬

🧠 On the Luck v Skill debate…

🍀 It still amuses me when people say FPL is 100% about luck 🍀 🤦🏽‍♂️

🍀 FPL is no more ‘all about luck’ than Poker is‼️

🍀 Data analysis 📊+ watching games 👀+ understanding Chip Strategy 🍟+ planning ahead with transfers 📝+ keeping on top of schedule changes 🗓+ reviewing player heat 🔥maps + understanding likely rotation patterns ⭕️ + researching new player stats 📈+ tracking player injuries 🤕+ tracking club COVID levels 😷+ tracking fan forums for predicted line ups etc etc very clearly has to play a big part in a FPL manager’s success. Anyone that argues otherwise is simply talking horse sh*t 🐎💩🤣.

🤔 In my opinion FPL is roughly 30% luck and 70% skill.

🤔 Over a very short time period (say over a period of just 1-4 GWs) I can accept that luck may play a bigger role - let’s say it even gets to a 50/50 split.

🤔 Take it over a medium or longer term though (let’s say between 1 and 3 seasons) and you’d have to be a real numpty 🤯 not to understand that luck 🍀 plays an ever decreasing role. Over let’s say a 5 year period I doubt that luck plays any more than a 20% role max in FPL.

🍀 What do you reckon guys and girls Are you a FPL manager who believes it’s all about luck or do you take responsibility for your own performance and accept that whilst luck plays a part, the biggest reason for success and failure is the FPL manager themselves 🤷🏾‍♂️.

On the role of ‘emotion’ in FPL and poker…

🤔 I thought it might be interesting to quickly discuss the principles of ‘Tilt’, ‘Mega Tilt’ and Full Blown Tilt’…

📚Definition of ‘Tilt’ in Poker:

‘Tilt is a poker term for a state of mental or emotional confusion or frustration in which a player adopts a less than optimal strategy, usually resulting in the player becoming overly aggressive.’

📚 ‘Mega Tilt’ and ‘Full Blown Tilt’ are more extreme versions of Tilt itself‼️

Is that ringing any bells 🔔 with FPL managers

🤔 Poorly thought out early transfers
🤔 Transfers made in rage / anger (Tilt)
🤔 Lurches towards a completely different strategy after just one bad GW (Mega Tilt)
🤔 Crazy points hits in a panic after seeing a mini league competitor pull ahead
🤔 Maverick captaincy picks following a premium captaincy blank
🤔 Chip deployment in non-optimal GWs
🤔 A combination of all of the above (Full Blown Tilt) 🤣

Coming later today…a Wildcard 31 Article, Draft WC31 squad and an associated Player Pool for GW31-38 👊.

Have a good day all 👍

🚨🍟 WHERE TO PLAY YOUR REMAINING CHIPS⁉️ 🍟🚨

Following on from yesterday’s GW31 Wildcard article (copy pinned 📌 in the announcements) I thought I’d also now look at Chip 🍟 deployment for those left with a bunch of Chips…

Key🔐:

WC🍟 = Wildcard
BB🍟 = Bench Boost
FH🍟 = Free Hit
TC🍟 = Triple Captain

Believe it or not, there are a fair few managers that do still have a WC🍟 + BB🍟 + 2 x FH🍟’s left. The biggest question those managers will now be asking themselves is which GWs exactly do they play them in and in what order‼️

Most managers have now played their TC🍟. Maybe those managers who didn’t WC in DGW26 nor play a TC🍟 were in a coma 🤒 or on Mars 🪐 when the blindingly obvious Salah TC in DGW26 for 84pts was staring us in the face with a big flashing light 💡 attached to it and a siren 🚨going off to boot 🥾⁉️

Here are my thoughts on when to play the remaining WC + BB + 2 x FH Chips 🍟 if you have all 4 left…

It really is a squad dependent decision…and that isn’t me ‘sitting on the fence’‼️

Unless your squad genuinely needs an overhaul I would very firmly be of the opinion that a WC is best left now until GW34/35. I say that because:

1️⃣ I believe DGW36 is a better week to Bench Boost than DGW33 is.

2️⃣ You ideally want to play your WC🍟 and your BB🍟 right next to each other.

3️⃣ WC31 into a BB36 is too big a gap IMO.

4️⃣ WC34/35 leading into a BB36 feels optimal to me.

5️⃣ If you WC in GW31/32 you’re most likely left trying to set up a DGW33 Bench Boost as part of your WC. The downside to this is that you’re left with as many as 5 players that you don’t really want for the period GW34-38 🤷.

If you look at my WC31 Article and Draft team what ends up happening if you adjust it to line up a DGW33 Bench Boost, is that the likes of Foster, Gelhardt, Johnson, Havertz & Robertson end up getting replaced with Dubravka, Weghorst, Livramento, Maddison and Schar / Burn / Targett (i.e. to give you more doublers in DGW33).

👆Now that might feel and look 👀 ok to some people but to me that feels like I’d then want rid of most of those come GW34…not ideal to want rid of 25% of your squad just 3 GWs after playing your WC 🤔.

Gun to the head 🔫, if I had to say the best weeks to play the remaining Chips it would be as follows:

1️⃣ If you’ve got WC + BB + 2 x FH - I would FH33, WC34/35, BB36 and FH37.

2️⃣ If you’ve got WC + BB + 1 x FH - I would WC34/35, BB36 and FH33 or FH37.

3️⃣ If you’ve got 2 x FH - I would 100% deploy one of them in DGW36. The second one is actually trickier than you might think as DGW33 is the other obvious place on the face of it but it also looks like one of those DGWs that has the potential for your non FH team to do very well too‼️ It’s therefore got a good potential upside but also the potential to go wrong‼️ Given one of the FHs will be played in DGW36 though it rules out being able to play the other one in GW35 or 37 (as you can’t play FH Chips in consecutive GWs). DGW33 probably does then remain then the most obvious GW to play it in.

4️⃣ If you’ve just got a TC🍟 left I’d wait to see how the doubles land for the big teams in DGW36 and most likely in GW37 too. A TC🍟 is best used on a premium asset that will play both games (Salah or Kane being the most obvious picks).

5️⃣ If you’ve just got 1 FH left - I would play it in DGW36 without a shadow of a doubt.

If you’ve got any other combination of Chips left just let me know and I’ll give you my thoughts 👍

Hope this helps‼️

FPL Daily Injury Updates (28/03/22) 🏥 :

#Bamford will miss the rest of the season. 'Following meetings with consultants earlier this week, we can confirm Patrick has ruptured his plantar fascia [although] he will not require surgery. It is expected that Patrick will be on the side-lines for a minimum of six weeks'
#Phillips, #Cooper and #Llorente have all trained this week and they will be available for Saints. #Raphinha has also recovered from illness, while Klich has completed the concussion protocol. #Meslier should be OK after suffering severe bruising to his thigh and lower torso.

Fabian #Delph was involved with the group. Frank #Lampard is hopeful that the midfielder can be in first-team contention after the break. Yerry #Mina will step up his recovery at Finch Farm this week.

French outlet Le Parisien reports that Paul #Pogba sat out of Les Bleus' training session on Sunday after suffering a 'foot contusion'. Raphael #Varane, who also picked up a knock against the Ivory Coast, trained away from the main group.

The French FF confirms that Crystal Palace midfielder Michael #Olise has been withdrawn from the Under-21 squad due to "inflammation" in his left foot. The 20-year-old was introduced as a 64th minute substitute during Thursday nights' qualifying win over Faroe Islands.

#Dubravka was illness-related, while #Schar has been managing a persistent groin issue for a while now... So, hopefully, more of a precaution given the non-competitive nature of #SUI fixtures.

#Stones may not be risked vs the Ivory Coast. "He felt something in the warm-up," #Southgate said. "We don't think it's too serious. It's possible he could be OK for Tuesday, but we didn't have time to assess it properly before KO, so we didn't want to take any chances."

football london now confirming it is indeed a precautionary measure after complaining of 'tightness' in his thigh. #Davies should be fine for the visit of Newcastle on Sunday.

Andy #Robertson has returned to training after missing Scotland's game against Poland.

Teams Form [Last 4 Matches] (Attack) : Key Notes :

🐔 Spurs are ranked in top 3 for most attacking aspects across last 4 matches, most goals scored (12), most shots (58), 3rd most XG (10.3) & most big chances(17).. With their next 5 PL games scoring no more than 3 in FDR & a potential double to be rescheduled, they have everything to play for until the end of the season with top four finish up for grab. Owning either one of (Harry Kane 12.5) or (Heung Min-Son 10.9) is a no brainer considering their explosive potential returns compared to budget-friendly team mate (Dejan Kulusevski 6.3).

🌑 Most FPL managers have ditched out Man City assets due to blanks & recent double GWs, though we can’t overlook one of the best attacking teams in the league (actually the best along with Liverpool). Over their last 4 matches the Citizens are second only to Liverpool for XG (10.7) & SoT (26) while they are 3rd for most big chances (13), which bodes well for the sky blues ahead of a very appealing set of fixtures. (Kevin De Bruyne 11.7 ) & (Ryad Mahrez 8.3) are owned by less than 8% & could be a nice differential if you are chasing the lead in your mini leagues.

🍬 Everton is one of only two teams with 2 fixtures in GW 31 , though you need to be cautious before even thinking to invest in Toffees assets , having had the worst attacking stats in the league over their last 4 outings , fewest goals scored, fewest XG scored , fewest big chances & 2nd fewest Sot. So my advice to you not to hurry & get as much players from Everton & over look other single GW assets , since I believe Everton assets fall in the don’t buy –don’t sell category for now.

🟨 Just like Everton, Burnley will have another Double GW with both Man City & Everton paying a visit to Turf Moor. The Clarets are ranked in bottom three for most attacking aspects across last 4 matches , fewest goals scored (joint with Everton), 2nd fewest XG , fewest Sot & joint 3rd for big chances created. If you still own (Wout Weghorst 6.4) keep him as he will probably get 4 points only , while I wouldn’t be interest to bring in other Burnley assets.

Which team impressed you the most recently ? #FPL

🛡 Teams Form [Last 4 Matches] (Defence) : Key Notes :

🔵 Chelsea has continued their impressive defensive displays, as the blues have conceded fewest shots on target (5), fewest big chances (3) & 3rd fewest XG across last 4 matches. With no fixtures scores more than 3 in FDR for Chelsea in the next games & 2 double GWs to be rescheduled, there is each & every reason we should invest in the blues defence, accordingly it is no wonder to see (Antoio Rudiger 6.1) owned by more than 24% of managers, while it is worth keeping an eye on (Reece James 6.2m) who is nearing a return from injury.

🔮 Crystal Palace are one of the teams who showed great defensive solidity over their last 4 PL games, having conceded fewest goals(1) , 4th fewest XG (3.29) &5th fewest shots (35) which is considered great for a mid-table team with a very appealing fixture until the end of the season (all remaining games scores just 2 or 3 in FDR), getting any of their budget defender would be a nice move.

🐦 Once again Norwich remains bottom of our defensive chart, as it is just a matter of time before they officially relegated to the championship. Most goals & XG conceded, most shots conceded on target & most big chances conceded, which is simply telling you that you need to target attackers from teams facing Norwich!

👼 After 3 clean sheets between GWs (25-27), Southampton lost the next three games & conceded 8 goals (18th) which further illustrates the huge dip in form for the saints. Across their last 4 matches, Southampton have conceded 11 big chances (18th) & their upcoming fixtures for the short term are not encouraging so I believe there are many better options than Tino Livramento & Co at least for now!

Which team's defence impressed you the most recently ? #FPL

🧠 What kind of FPL Manager are you and does it reflect your real life personality 🤔?

Given we’re still in this fuc**** awful 2️⃣ week international break 🌍😭 I thought I’d do another random article🤣👍.

This article is all about whether your FPL style mirrors your real life personality

See what you think and drop some of your own comments below 👍

1️⃣ Risk Taker v Conservative Style

I’d definitely be classed as a conservative FPL manager. For sure I do sometimes take risks but generally speaking I play the percentages. I’d like to think that my record shows there is real merit to the approach. A top 1k finish + multiple top 35k finishes + winning 80% of my mini leagues for the past 4 seasons shows a conservative approach can pay off🤷🏼.

In this area my FPL style very much reflects my personality in real life. I wouldn’t take big gambles with investments and stuff like that 💷. Equally I wouldn’t just stick money away in the safest place possible 💹. I like the middle ground‼️

2️⃣ Methodical & Meticulous Planner v Spontaneous Decision Maker

I’d definitely be in the methodical and meticulous planner cohort‼️ Very rare that I’d make impulsive last minute decisions. Equally though I’m not stubbornly rigid in my FPL thinking 🧠

One example where I’ve shown some flexibility (by my standards 🤣) is when I changed from a planned GW34/35 Wildcard + GW36 Bench Boost plan to a more radical WC28 + BB29 plan. Albeit I made that decision a good 3 days before the GW28 deadline, it was still quite unusual for me to come up with a revised plan at comparatively short notice following some fixture changes dropping in.

The WC26+FH27+BB28+TC29 cohort of managers would be more radical still as they in effect complexly tore up their plans and came up with another (very good in most cases) plan late on a Friday afternoon ahead of the GW26 deadline.

My character type means I need more time than that to get my head around radical shifts in direction. I’m the guy who likes to have the latest iPhone 📱but I only get it once it’s been out for 3 months and I’ve let others experience the glitches that then get ironed out before I jump in 🤷🏽. I suppose my WC28/BB29 plan means I’m not a Nokia 3210 📞 guy tho either 🤷🏽.

Once again, my FPL style of planning reflects what I’m like in real life…I find comfort in knowing that I have a plan and it takes something significant to change it 📝.

3️⃣ Play The Long Game v Target Short Term Gains 📊

Again, I’d be more of a ‘steady Eddie’. My FPL style leads to a consistent GW by GW style of scoring rather than a lot of peaks and troughs 📊. I see myself as the Tortoise 🐢that beats the Hare 🐇. I’m happy to take a small red arrow in some GWs (BGW30 for example) as I know it’ll help me gain bigger green arrows down the line. I’m all about the end game.

Once more this reflects my approach to real life and maps over to things like my style of playing golf 🏌️‍♂️. I always have a medium and long term target in mind and believe in my ability to get there. I accept there will be tank traps en route but because I know I’ve put together a good plan I don’t let those tank traps send me way off course 🗺. I’ll accept some short term pain for medium and long term gain.

4️⃣ Competitive v Passive

I’m the same in FPL as I am in real life…super competitive‼️ It doesn’t matter whether I’m playing FPL, golf, Nintendo with the kids or just guessing whether a coin 🪙 flip is going to be heads or tails…I always want to win 🏆.

5️⃣ Opinionated v Passive

I’ve got an opinion on most things. I’m also self-aware enough to know that some people like this and some people really don’t‼️

When it comes to receiving opinions from others I like to think that I’m open minded. Believe it or not there are many people in this group that have influenced my FPL decisions this season.

In real life I’m very similar. I respect subject matter experts that have walked the walk 🚶and don’t just talk the talk 🗣.

Conclusions:
I might conclude from all the above that I’m a fairly dull FPL manager and a fairly boring person in real life 😂.

There are life lessons in FPL and vice versa.

One thing I wouldn’t suggest is for FPL managers to constantly be changing their style and approach. For sure SOME flexibility can be a good thing, but for me you should try and stay true to your principles as much as you can throughout the season. A big lurch one way or the other can be dangerous as you can end up missing out on the benefits of both approaches.

It certainly helps me that I write ✍️ down a list of FPL Commandments that I try & follow throughout the season. I keep it updated and use it to try and better my performance. I also use it as a point of reference if I have a bad GW to see 👀 if I’ve underperformed because I’ve failed to stick to the plan. See the announcements section for an up to date copy of my 25 FPL Commandments if you’d like a read 📖.

📝 Note that I first adopted this ‘FPL Commandments’ approach 4 seasons ago and I’m on target to have achieved a top 35k finish in every single one of those seasons…I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Having a good plan and a set of principles to guide that plan works.

So is your FPL style similar to your personality in real life or do you adopt a different persona
