• Barco started three of Brighton’s final six fixtures, subbing on in another two. With Pervis Estupinan (£5.0m) set to be out until September at the earliest, there might be a route into the Seagulls’ side.
• Taylor Harwood-Bellis (£4.0m) looks like your best bet for starts . After making his Saints debut last September, he started every match he was available for. He chipped in with five attacking returns but clean sheets were in relatively short supply: just 12 in 46 league matches for the Saints. His loan move has also been made permanent to the tune of £20m. That isn’t a sum a Premier League new boy is going to spend on a reserve
• Ben Johnson (£4.0m) has arrived, presumably to take up the right-back slot once occupied by Clarke and Tuanzebe. Would he have moved without game-time assurances? Either way, he’ll offer much less attacking threat than opposite full-back Leif Davis (£4.5m), a glorified winger who delivered an astonishing 18 assists in 2023/24.

• Ezri Konsa isn’t the most exciting pick at the back but could offer value at just £4.5m. Aston Villa ranked among the top seven sides for goals conceded last season, with Konsa playing a key role, either at centre-back or right-back.
• Crystal Palace had the fifth-best defence in terms of goals conceded last season, which went up to third following Oliver Glasner’s appointment. They supplemented it with five clean sheets in 13 matches under the Austrian, so a Palace defender certainly carries appeal given their initial run of fixtures.
• Dan Burn (£4.5m) might not be 100% nailed, but the 32-year-old still has plenty going for him. An Eddie Howe favourite, Burn has mainly been deployed at left-back in recent seasons. However, with Sven Botman (£4.5m) currently injured, he could partner Fabian Schar (£5.5m) at centre-half in Gameweek 1, particularly if Newcastle United don’t sign another centre-back.

While there has been a change in manager since, all pre-season signs point to Steve Cooper using Winks as heavily as his predecessor. Two goals and zero assists were his tangible contributions last season. Just seven shots in the box arrived in the entirety of 2023/24, with his overall shot and key pass counts identically low (30).
• Tim Iroegbunam (£4.5m) earned praise for his performances in the last two friendlies especially. With Amadou Onana (£5.0m) and Andre Gomes gone, plus James Garner (£5.0m) currently nursing an injury, there’s an opportunity for the former Villa man to stake a first-team claim ahead of Gameweek 1.

A hulking presence up top, the 6’4″ Norwegian is what Wolves have been missing for years: a genuine targetman. Not since the days of pre-injury Raul Jimenez (£5.5m) have the Old Gold really had an effective battering ram.
• Another ‘too good for the Championship, not good enough for the Premier League’ striker? Time will tell but Adam Armstrong‘s (£5.5m) two-goal tallies in 2021/22 and 2022/23 stand out for the wrong reasons.
