All Coons Look Alike to Me

by Ernest Hogan (1896)

Download sheet music/audio/video: foundring.gumroad.com/l/ACLATM

This is one of the first ragtime songs ever published, in 1896. Ernest Hogan is often credited as the first composer to publish a ragtime song, but actually Ben Harney was over a year earlier with "You've Been a Good Old Wagon, But You've Done Broke Down" published in Jan 1895.

However, since the narrative was created early on that ragtime was exclusively Black American in origin, Harney was written out of history because he was White.

As a result, credit in mainstream history was given to Black Ernest Hogan. This created a predicament, since his first true rag had this very embarrassing title, even though the song itself isn't really that racist, since it's about a black chick ditching her deadbeat bf for someone more responsible.

So instead of just giving Harney credit, they cite an earlier Hogan song that isn't true ragtime.

This is a historically significant song, either way.

All Simps Look Alike to Me

This is a parody of the classic early ragtime song "All Coons Look Alike to Me" from 1896, which was the first true ragtime song published by a Black composer, Ernest Hogan.

Hogan was inspired by a previous tune called "All Pimps Look Alike to Me" which was never published or recorded so it didn't survive. He changed it to "coon" because "pimp" was considered far more offensive.

Although racial terms were very common in music and not considered offensive by today's standards, sexual content in music was taboo.

That being said, the original song is brilliant and catchy and perfect for a clown world parody update, and changing it to "simps" from the original "pimps" was too good to resist.

Enjoy this satirical take on a 129yo song!

The Coons' Christmas Dinner

By John De Mond (1890)

This is one of the rarest Christmas songs ever. It's never been recorded before...you're hearing it for the first time in 135 years. There is no information online about the composer. This appears to be his only surviving work.

It's remarkable how it sounds like a genuine Christmas song but was written decades before the popular holiday tunes we know today.

This is true musical archeology. This would have been lost forever, no doubt. Enjoy!

Merry Christmas!

This extremely rare coon song was completely forgotten and doomed to be lost forever. I've saved it from obscurity and now it's been immortalized digitally.

Recording these historically significant American songs is the most important thing I can do as a musician. My efforts are woefully underappreciated but will be eventually recognized, hopefully in my lifetime.
