YOU'VE BEEN A GOOD OLD WAGON, BUT YOU'VE DONE BROKE DOWN

By Ben Harney (1895)

This is the very first ragtime song ever published.

Ragtime is America's first original music genre, and yet almost no one is preserving this important tradition.

In fact, it's being erased and replaced. For example, Wikipedia refuses to give Ben Harney credit for being first even though he was known as the Father of Ragtime. Why? He was White.

While some of the early ragtime composers were Black, its true origin is White America and comes directly from the classical European musical tradition.

They are lying about the origins of ragtime and jazz and I'm going to expose them by actually playing this music, essentially bringing it back from the dead.

This is the first time this historically important song has been recorded with words in a century.

I have many more to share. You aren't going to believe how good these songs are. They're amazing.

Justice for my boy Ben Harney!

LA PAS MA LA

by Ernest Hogan (1895)

Ernest Hogan was an early black composer of coon songs and ragtime. His 1896 song "All Coons Look Alike to Me" was a massive hit and one of the earliest popular ragtime songs.

His song La Pas Ma La from 1895 is incorrectly referred to as the "first" ragtime song by some historians. It wasnt first and it isn't truly "ragtime"...though it has ragtime elements.

The true first published ragtime song was "You've Been a Good Old Wagon, But You've Done Broke Down" by Ben Harney, which predates "La Pas Ma La" by almost a year.

Historians incorrectly give Ernest Hogan credit for writing the first rag because he was black. White Ben Harney is denied credit, despite being first, because it breaks the narrative that ragtime/jazz was black in origin when that is demonstrably false.

Despite its historical significance, I'm the first to record this song with words in a century!!

Here's what may be the second "ragtime" song ever published!
