Male and female pine cones.

The male cone (microstrobili or pollen cone) is structurally similar across all conifers, differing only in small ways (mostly in scale arrangement) from species to species. Extending out from a central axis are microsporophylls (modified leaves).

The female pine cone, or megastrobilus, produces the ovule, or unfertilized seed. Scales (modified leaves) on the female cone open to receive pollen, then close. Fertilization takes place late the following spring. Over a two to three year period after fertilization, the woody female pine cone develops.

The Miyawaki method is an afforestation technique for cultivating fast-growing groves of native plants, with the dense, mixed planting intended to simulate the layers of a natural forest.

Originally developed by Japanese ecologist Akira Miyawaki in the early 1970s for Nippon Steel, the method has been adopted by various Japanese corporations, which planted Miyawaki forests both domestically and overseas.
Although the popularity of Miyawaki forests has skyrocketed in India, some ecological restoration practitioners question the methodโ€™s applicability to the countryโ€™s diverse ecological environments.
