India Conducts Fifth Cycle Leopard Population Estimation. Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav released the report on Status of Leopards in India, on 29th February, 2024 at New Delhi.

Madhya Pradesh has the highest leopard population with 3,907 individuals followed by Maharashtra (1,985) and Karnataka (1,879).

The Union Cabinet approved the establishment of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) on February 29, 2024. The alliance's headquarters will be in India and it will receive a one-time budgetary support of Rs 150 crore for five years from 2023-24 to 2027-28. The IBCA will bring together 96 big cat range countries to collaborate on conservation efforts.

In a significant development, the Supreme Court, on Wednesday, announced a ban on tiger safaris within Uttarakhand's Jim Corbett National Park. The apex court's order specified that tiger safaris would now only be permitted in the peripheral and buffer zones surrounding the national park.

India to start world’s first black tiger safari in Odisha :

Similipal Tiger Reserve is the only home for melanistic tigers in the wild in the world.

Similipal Tiger Reserve was designated in 1956, part of Project Tiger since 1973, and declared a biosphere reserve in 1994 . It is
is part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

Two tribal communities, Erenga Kharias and Mankirdias inhabit in Similipal.

On March 10, 2024, Gamini, a South African cheetah, gave birth to five cubs in Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. The cubs are Gamini's offspring, as 20 cheetahs from South Africa and Namibia were brought to the park in September 2022 as part of the government's Project Cheetah.

This is the first litter by a South African cheetah in India. 


The total number of cheetahs in India to 26. It is the fourth cheetah litter on Indian soil.
