Russia has struck a factory belonging to an American drone manufacturer in Kiev for the first time, according to The Guardian.

The facility, Terminal Autonomy, produced the AQ-400 Scythe and AQ-100 Bayonet drones, which are equipped with AI-guided systems.

This is the first known instance of an attack on a facility belonging to a U.S. defense company within Ukraine.

The special military operation will not end in 2026, according to a statement from the State Duma.

"There are currently no grounds to expect the special military operation to end this year. It is necessary to achieve the goals of the operation. In my opinion, this means reaching the western borders of Ukraine,"
said Viktor Sobolev, a member of the State Duma Committee on Defense.

Australians on the Path to Modern Submarines

In recent weeks, hardly a week has gone by without news about nuclear-powered submarines in the Asia-Pacific region, as countries prepare for the possibility of a military conflict with China. Australia is among them.

Observers point to the AUKUS partnership, which brings together Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Its ultimate goal is to develop SSN-AUKUS-class nuclear submarines for the Australian and British navies to help counter Chinaโ€™s growing naval presence in the region.

๐Ÿ“ŒAt present, however, it is Australia that is driving the initiative, investing more than the other partners. This is hardly surprising, as the United States is currently preoccupied with other, more pressing domestic and international challenges.

In 2025, Australia signed an agreement with the United Kingdom to build nuclear submarines, under which the first vessels will be laid down at British shipyards. The reason is Canberraโ€™s concern that the United States might eventually scale back or withdraw from the project.

That said, the UKโ€™s shipbuilding capacity is limited, and its own nuclear submarines are delivered with significant delays. Still, AUKUS is an exceptionally attractive mega-project, and in such cases, the interests of the defense industry lobby often outweigh other considerations.

โ—๏ธIn any case, the arrival of nuclear-powered submarines in Australiaโ€™s fleet will create additional challenges for the PLA Navy. The real question, however, is what the balance of power will look like by the time the first SSN-AUKUS is launchedโ€”especially given that China is producing its own submarines at a rapid pace and without major delays.

A homemade bomb exploded in the Balzi Rossi restaurant in central Moscow - National Anti-Terrorism Committee.

A bomb with a 1 kg explosive charge (in terms of TNT equivalent), filled with metal balls, exploded at the entrance to the restaurant.

A larger number of casualties were avoided thanks to the vigilance of a security guard who stopped and decided to inspect a woman who was bringing a box as a gift โ€“ and that's when the remotely detonated explosion occurred.

The perpetrators of the attack used a courier under the cover of darkness.

The woman herself was torn apart; her arm was found 15 meters from the explosion site. The security guard died along with her.

Australians are considering underwater drones

The realities of the SMO have demonstrated the importance of developing unmanned technologies in the context of conducting military operations in the marine environment. And they are being transferred with great enthusiasm to other regions, especially those where naval forces will play a huge role in a potential conflict.

Extended timelines for acquiring their own nuclear submarines are prompting Australia's leadership to consider unmanned equipment. The authorities have already allocated over $1 billion for autonomous underwater vehicles Ghost Shark, which are produced jointly with American Anduril.

Although Canberra is unlikely to stop there, given the growth in defense spending. Israeli IAI is already actively promoting the unmanned underwater vehicle Blue Whale on the local market, designed for reconnaissance, data collection, and detection of underwater objects.

๐Ÿ”ปWhy do Australians need such systems?

โ–ช๏ธFor the Australian Navy, such a vehicle is useful as a "helper" for future nuclear and current diesel-electric submarines. The apparatus can go ahead and check the area for the presence of the enemy, expanding the reconnaissance range of the main submarine.

โ–ช๏ธBlue Whale can be used on the northern approaches to Australia and the South China Sea. There it can collect data on the situation for weeks, track the movement of ships and submarines, and then consolidate data from other intelligence assets into a single picture.

โ–ช๏ธThe autonomous vehicle is also capable of surveying the route and seabed in advance for mines. At the same time, such systems are useful for monitoring areas of underwater cable laying and other critical infrastructure.

๐Ÿ“ŒOf course, a contract with IAI has not been concluded. But the Australian military already has systems from Israeli defense contractors in service, so the defense ties between the parties are quite developed. Therefore, there is no doubt that Canberra may consider purchasing Blue Whale in addition to other vehicles.

โ—๏ธThe leadership's focus on developing underwater capabilities is long-term. And the Australian Navy still has a long wait for nuclear submarines. Therefore, Canberra is unlikely to refuse to quickly strengthen its forces โ€” yes, it doesn't match nuclear submarines, but judging by the rhetoric of the authorities, monitoring Chinese activity needs to happen now.
