A sun dance at Solstice

Midsummer, the Longest day, litha

the Sun at its highest point standing still,

a celebration of water, earth and sky,

the great father spirit ascends

to the reunion with his son and earth mother.

The bright half of the year has come,

dance in the Inca temple of the sun,

torch the fire by the lake shore,

to keep evil at bay,

bonfires on mountain high,

praying to the gods of the sky for rain,

to wash the ashes into the earth.

The oak king at the height of his power,

bathed in the full strength of the sun,

commands the heavens

upon the greenwood throne,

birch, fern and flowers,

St. John’s Wort to chase the devil,

a triumph of light over dark,

good over evil,

magic is at its peak,

The rising of the Nile

flooding the land with fertility,

pyramids and sphinx

like the heel and slaughter stones of Stonehenge

aligned with the sun at dawn.

Nature at its most majestic,

with spirits of field, forest, river and stream,

a time of change and new beginnings,

light, warmth, strength and high energy,

before the sun star moves south

with it the light gently grows fainter

to wane day by day
