I have a talk rendering now, unsure if it should fly free tonight as it will be very late. But, it is the weekend. So maybe I will. I'm not good at strategically scheduling things. In a 1666 list of Pagan Gods and miscellaneous entities, Laurentius Petri mentions "Tontucupit" (modern Finnish: tonttukupit), meaning "elf cups". Clearly this is a reference to cupstones, in the cups / indentations of which food was left — and this mention reveals that the entities called tonttu (plural: tontut) were the ones receiving the food.
In Sweden, it's the jultomte ('Yule elf') who is the traditional bringer of gifts on Yule, whereas in Finland Santa's elves are called joulutonttu. So, when we in modern times have people leaving milk and cookies for Santa, what do we in fact have?
