Samhain (Sah-wen or Saw-en) is the celtic fire festival held each year between October 31 and November 1. Samhain marks the end of summer and celebrates the harvest which prepares us for the winter. Samhain ushers in the dark half of the year and it is believed that this is the period when the veil between this world and the world of our ancestors is at its thinnest. This allows more interaction between the human world and the spirit world.
It was believed that on the night of Oct 31, ghosts of the dead would walk amongst us and in order to keep the restless and “evil” spirits at bay, large bonfires were lit in the centre of the village. At the break of morning, people would take a light from the bonfire (lighting a stick) and take it home to start the fire in their hearth, keeping their home free from evil as well.
Children would go out in a disguise (in Scotland it is called “guising”), often with blackened faces so that they could not easily be seen in the dark and so that by being in disguise, they would be free to safely venture out and not be detected by the wicked spirits.
In Scotland, Neeps, or turnips (Rutabagas) were carved instead of pumpkins. And an interesting side note is that the Witchcraft Act of 1735 forbade the consumption of pork pastries on Halloween. This wasn’t repealed until the middle of the 20th century and once again, sausage rolls could be served at gatherings and parties.

Halloween is coming and even in the Netherlands people decorate their gardens and houses with ghosts, skeletons and witches😎. I like werewolves very much and these beings are very connected with European culture. Let's talk about werewolves🐺. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_kt_ID9DVw

The Sacred Bear And Germanic Motifs Of Magic, Rites Of Passage and Rebirth
“The bear has always played an important part of the world for our folk. Its skins were used to show authority and rank, used for magical acts of traveling and controlling certain aspects of nature. It was seen as a mode of migrating the soul to different places and reincarnating dead warriors to join Odin at the Battle of Ragnarok. And although we may lack a lot of information about rituals surrounding the bear, it still holds a great power over the world, as its sinews are used as part of Gleipnir to restrain the destruction of Fenrir, the spawn of Loki. The bear offers protection to the folk and in this wolf age that we now live in, calling back the spirit of the bear in our traditions can give us strength, fertility and power against the forces of destruction.”
