Today February 26th is Lent according to the Catholic Church. But did you know that Lent actually comes from the Old High German name for the month of March? It descends from lenzinmânot (spring-month) and is related to the word "lengthening" and the dawning of spring, because it occurs as the length of daylight begins to wax. Related to Old English lencten and Dutch lente. From Proto Teutonic *langatinaz meaning "spring" and breaks down to *langaz (long) and *tinaz (day).

Also interesting to note that this word only exists in the Ingaevonic languages, who are the only Teutonic peoples that have surviving attestations of a spring/dawn goddess. (Although I'm sure it exists hidden in the Norse tradition somewhere.)

It has NOTHING to do with Christianity. The church appropriated our holidays and our native time keeping. They do not own them. They did not invent them. And we demand them back as they are rightfully ours to celebrate. Return to our ancient path! Abandon Christianity now!

Happy Lent!🌱🍄🌄
A beautiful story of connecting to ones cultural roots. May we all be so blessed as the woman in this story!
