Weather SITREP: Solar Flare

At or around 1023 EST today a "Major X1.5" solar flare erupted on the sun's surface and traveled to Earth in less than 8 minutes. The flare hit our atmosphere and caused a shortwave radio blackout over the Atlantic ocean and and along coastal regions. Marine and ham radio went black in the area.

This was the first X-class flare of Solar Cycle 25 and the strongest experienced in 4 years.

Debrief: It's important to note how quickly an occurrence on the sun can affect life on earth.  Expect less than a 5 minute warning via Presidential or Emergency Alert Systems in the event of a CME causing EMP or other dangerous solar, Life Altering Event (LAE). Note that flares are classified by their X-ray brightness as A, B, C, M or X with A being the weakest and X being the strongest. This was an X.

A CME, a charged burst of hot plasma, was not directed toward Earth luckily due to the sunspot being on the edge of the sun's surface. Otherwise you might not be reading this message due to an EMP. Have contingency communication and an action plan such as ICERS. (bit.ly/ICERS)
