A year ago on this day a fire broke in Notre-Dame de Paris, one of the most famous cathedral in the world.
Did you know that in 1711 the oldest Parisian monument was discovered in its basement?
Dating from the 1st century, the Pillar of the Boatmen appears to be an offering from the boatmen of the Seine (the nautes) to the Roman emperor Tiberius who then reigned over Gaul.
However, their allegiance remained cautious: the pillar (also called a dedication stone) represents both the Celtic pantheon and that of the new Roman rulers, a rare example of syncretism.
